Curls and Caramel
For a Tuesday, we’ve been quite busy. First, Gemma is still here and man, is she exhausting! She crashed last night after a rompus time with me and some friends (human) who came over for dinner. Those friends included three young girls who are, dare I say, as active and as energetic as Ms. Gemma. Gemma (and I) were so tired out last night, we slept the whole night through and only woke with the alarm.
Today started with a long walk down by the lake. I don’t think Gemma had ever been that direction before because she often stopped to ponder her surroundings, a bit hesitant to move forward. Once we looped around and headed home, though, she got right into the swing of things and trotted along quite nicely.
But it’s another warm day today and so we got hot and tired rather quickly. We rested for a bit of time before we headed up to retrieve Lucy. Gretchen and I weren’t too sure how well Lucy and Gemma would get along, but they had a fabulous time together with Lucy chasing tennis balls and Gemma chasing Lucy.
Gemma is fast, but Lucy is most definitely faster. Gemma never gave up the chase, though. She followed Lucy like glue on a 4th grader’s nose. Lucy, surprisingly, even let Gemma
play with her tennis ball. Lucy NEVER does that so clearly Lucy approved of Gemma.
Gemma was never that interested in the ball. She was far more interested in chasing Lucy and for a good half hour, that’s exactly what she did while I rested in the shade watching as Gemma tormented someone else besides me! What a relief!
Meanwhile, Lucy chased the ball as she is wont to do and even demanded that Gretchen put down her camera and throw the darn ball again!
But then we got some unexpected visitors and it was time to play greeter.
Needless to say, the combination of sun, fetch, visitors and friends made for some happy contentment!
But our day was far from over. We returned Lucy and picked up Ollie. He’s always so happy to see us and he was particularly happy because we came back to my house for some time in the sun and a full on romp!
Ollie LOVES Gemma and the feeling, as far as I can tell is mutual. Gemma’s a busy bee so it’s no wonder her dads packed one of her favorite toys in her overnight bag — a bumble bee! I found the bee particularly wonderful and did my best to engage the others in a game of catch the bee.
Ollie and Gemma showed some interest…
And Ollie even tried to kill the bee by giving it a good old shake…
…but mostly, the two of them wanted to play chase…
While I rested with MY bee in the shade…
Ollie headed home while Gemma and I napped. We’ve been playing in the sun since Gretchen got home, but we’re both kind of tired and about ready to curl up for another nap. Slumber parties are hard work!
More tomorrow but for now I must type quietly as Gemma is folded into a dreamy, happy sleep!
