Routines

I am a dog of routine. I like knowing exactly what’s going to happen and when. Needless to say, these past two weeks have thrown me for a loop. As you saw from yesterday’s blog (Remiss-mas) the last two weeks have been anything but predictable. We’ve traveled to mountains, we’ve traveled to Oregon, we’ve visited with friends, Ann’s been home — it can really confuse a guy like me who is used to routine. Despite all the changes, I keep trying to find a predictable schedule to the day, but I’m still baffled.

Yesterday, in fact, I came back from a walk with Rosie and Tyson, raced into the house, and searched all around for Ann. I’ve gotten so used to her being home, I was certain she must be in the house somewhere so I looked in the TV room, I looked on the couch (she’s been engrossed in a novel and likes to curl up under the special blanket and read), I searched upstairs and I even ventured into the basement to see if I could find her, but alas she wasn’t there!

Gretchen tells me things are going to get back to normal next week, but in the meantime I need to learn to go with the flow.

I don’t do flow well. That’s why I appreciated a chance to get back to my dog dog walking work. True, it was a light day — only Rosie, Tyson, and Saber — but it turned out to be a fun one.

First, as I’ve mentioned, were Rosie and Tyson. They were both very happy to see me and I must admit, I was excited to see them. “How’s your routine been,” I asked.

“Perfect,” said Rosie. “I get my treats and my meals and my walks just like normal and now that you’re back, I get to see you, too!”

“Not completely perfect,” added Tyson. “But then I’m a bit of a worrier.”

It’s true. He is. I can relate.

When we picked up Saber, I thought we’d just go for a walk, but when we walked over to the school field I was thrilled to see Monty and his Mom (his Mom’s got some days off from work!) as well as run into two other dogs whose names I can’t remember at this point (sorry). Anyway, we got to play fetch and chase and Monty begged for cookies and it was like old times!

Of course, the weather changed dramatically – from almost balmy in the morning, to downright nippy in the afternoon. They’re predicting snow on Wednesday, though I have my doubts. Anyway, it kind of explains the dark nature of the photos…all those gray clouds moving in!

When I got home from work, Ann was there in the kitchen and I gave her my special wiggly happy dance because, despite a change of routine, I’m always excited to see her!

Until tomorrow,

Rubin

Remiss-mas

I’m feeling a tad bit guilty. So much has happened in the past two weeks that it’s all a blur — just like the photo to the right. All this busy holiday stuff — shopping, packing for our trip, our trip, coming home — has sent me into a tail-spin (pun intended) and has thrown me off my normal routines. In fact this morning, when I looked at the photos still waiting to be uploaded I cringed. “How am I ever going to catch up?” I asked Gretchen.

“You begin,” was her simple answer.

Still, I feel remiss since I know there are people out there reading my blog (which to this day, astounds me!). So, I shall begin though even knowing when to begin is daunting.

We went skiing. This was way before Christmas day, but I want to start here because I LOVE TO SKI and it was kind of the start to the blur. But before we went skiing, Jessica and Quillette spent the night and while this may not seem important to you, it was extremely important to me. I love my Jessica and Quillette is kind enough to share her with me, as you can see.

My moms are always surprised that when Jessica comes to spend the night, I sleep with her. Not sure why they are surprised…I’m just being a good host to some of my favorite guests.

But then we went skiing. Jessica had never really been cross-country skiing, but she caught on quickly. And despite the snow boots, Quillette and I did too!

And then we had a very short work week…

I know I should write lots and lots of pithy stuff about Monday and Tuesday, but frankly, I only remember tidbits of those two days.

I guess that’s part of the blur effect brought on by too much holiday excitement and not enough normal routine.

Luckily, I have the photos to remind me…

Of Tyson and Rosie on a cloudy Monday…

Followed by Gemma, Oshi, and Perrito in the rain…

And finally Saber to end the day…

And then Tuesday, which turned out to be a very light day but a very monumental day since we took Rosie out with Saber. They’ve never met and both of them were pretty darn excited to meet each other. Luckily, Ann came with us to help with the excited leashes and to take a photo as well as be the subject of a few!

Yes, Saber has a powerful tongue and yes, I just came from the groomers (in preparation for the holiday) and yes, it was a short, but fun work day!

And then we were off…we drove a long way but met up with Grandma and Grandpa and then ending up at my Uncle Paul’s and Aunt Patti’s house.

Where the humans ate a birthday cake that was as rich and decadent as anything I’ve ever seen…

And then, to my surprise, my doggie cousins — Hope and Ringo — were whisked away. I was a bit taken aback because I usually hang out with them, but before I could say, “Get off of me!” they were hauled away in the car and driven to…(dramatic music!) the vet’s office!

Whew…I am so glad I didn’t have to accompany them, but from the photos, it looks like Ringo was wishing I was there to help deflect the inevitable…

While Hope was the good girl and behaved herself…

When they returned, Hope did what she always does…found a lap to sleep on…after posing for a holiday photo…

And Ringo curled up and went to sleep, which is kind of rare for him…

You see Ringo, as adorable as he looks here, is kind of bossy. Gretchen tells me it’s the breed, but I’m beginning to think it’s really just Ringo. He likes me very much and follows me around everywhere, but he also likes to pick fights and since I usually don’t back down, well, we can get into some mighty tussles. You, of course, only get to see the sleeping shots, which is probably for the best. Here’s even one of me…

But Ringo and I also like to play and after much cajoling on my part, we raced around the yard and had a grand (albeit blurry) time!

While Hope watched…and Uncle Paul took a hot tub…

And if that weren’t enough…

…we decided to forgo a ski trip (bummer, bummer, bummer) and find a place where we could take a nice long walk with my human cousin, Lindsey…

…only where my Uncle’s family lives is kind of odd. It’s all farmlands and orchards and hilly vistas and vineyards with nary a place to walk. We had to drive along windy roads and through weird little towns to find a park where we could run free and even then, Hagg Lake was muddy and filled with plants that covered in burrs that clung to my Velcro fur like you wouldn’t believe. Still, it was fun and beautiful…

As you can see, I didn’t mind the mud or the burrs though later I paid a price with a bath and a combing…still, you’d think a place as beautiful as this…

…would have a lot more places to walk without problems of trespassing or highway walking.

So instead of too many hikes, hung out at the house and I watched as the humans cooked…How many humans does it take to cook up some pork?

And I snickered a bit when Ringo was put outside and I was left inside…

And then we all sat around as everyone exchanged gifts…or course, Ringo and I found our gifts right away…

And I snuck into the family photo…don’t worry because my Uncle and Aunt and human cousins LOVE me to pieces just as much as I love them.

But when they opened all the presents, I must admit, I feel asleep…

And the humans did more cooking and carving (with the help of some online advice on how to carve a turkey…notice where I am!)…

And then we all laid around — our bellies full, hearts even fuller — and counted our blessings. Okay, the last part — counting our blessings — isn’t a blur at all. In fact, it’s probably the part I’ll remember the most of these past two weeks.

Until tomorrow,

Rubin

Singing Along with Angels…

For weeks we’ve been dealing with wet, rainy, and gray weather. Floods all around us, black clouds above us, and squishy conditions under our feet. It’s like this sometimes in Seattle and just when you’re ready to move somewhere warmer and give it up, this happens…

Yes, I heard the angels singing too. I can’t tell you how exciting it was to wake up to blue skies, white mountains, and a winter sun (not super warm, but if you stood directly in it, glorious all the same).

Rosie and Tyson enjoyed it…

Oshi even enjoyed it…

Gemma and Perrito found it playful…or maybe they just found each other playful…

Monty and I were happy to find some shade by the end of the day…

(and yes, Saber’s there, too…guess what he’s doing?)…

Yep, chewing on yet another stick…though eventually, added his lick of approval on the day…

And Monty tried to sing along with the angels…while Saber kept looking for the angels…

A great way to end a long week.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Beethoven’s Birthday, Among Other Things…

240 years ago, a baby was born in the snowy terrain of a middle country. His hair was curly and full on his head and came forth into the world with a bright look in his eyes. No one knew then what they would understand later, but this baby boy would one day do great things with his life. He’d write great music, he’d conduct amazing symphonies, and his greatest accomplishment of all…he’d become a dog walker.

Okay, the last part isn’t true, but for a moment, imagine if Beethoven decided to make a career change forgoing the piano and the composing and picked up a dog leash (or four and five) and became a dog walker. Would our lives today be that much different if he had? I, for one, think the job of dog walker would have been elevated to a higher status and that dogs around the world would benefit from such an esteemed man like Beethoven being the face of dog walking throughout history.

Alas, Beethoven, while he may have lived with a dog or two, never picked up a leash (or leashes), but instead picked up a pen and a thick piece of paper and wrote down tiny dots and squiggles that turned into some of the most amazing music known to humans (though, in fact, I like it too).

Why am I writing about Beethoven today? Well, December 16, by some accounts, was the date of birth of the great composer. Some say it was December 17, but in this house we celebrate the 16th as Beethoven’s official birthday. In his honor, we went out to dinner (well, I waited in the car) and then came home and ate coconut ice cream. You might think it’s weird that we celebrated this man, but if you knew the REAL REASON (one I’m not allowed to write about!), you’d understand.

Yes, I know I’m being particularly secretive, but I don’t want to make certain people (if you catch my drift) angry by letting you know that certain people and Beethoven share something in common. Nope, today wasn’t supposed to be anything special (except for the dinner and dessert celebration).

It was just supposed to be business as usual, but all day long, as we walked Gemma first…where we looked out over the lake at the mountains to the north and east and the brave ducks in winter…

…then Rosie…who posed with me in front of Mt. Rainier…way off in the distance and then drooled at the thought of a cookie reward…

…and finally Saber…who tried to sing all the parts of Ode to Joy…

…while I sang along with the Beethoven soundtrack in my head — Moonlight Sonata, the Fifth Symphony, and my personal favorite, the Ninth Symphony. Why is it my favorite? Because I think it would make a great soundtrack for a video about me playing in a big open field filled with knee-deep snow!

Not that it’s all about me…certainly not on this day…but on this particular day I like to remember Beethoven and his music as a way of honoring someone else’s monumental birthday.

Ouch! Gretchen just gave me a whack on my shoulder. I guess she didn’t like the word monumental. Geez…some people!

Until tomorrow,

Rubin

Key word…”puncture!”

I thought it was going to be a typical Wednesday — we’d get up, do our morning routines, and then venture up the street to get Monty to begin a long day of dog walking.

The first part went according to plan — we got up, did our morning routines and when Gretchen put the leash on me I thought, “Okay, Monty, here we come,” but instead of venturing up the street, she put me in the car and we headed east.

“Oh no,” I thought. “This isn’t looking very promising.”

When we pulled into the vet’s office, I had that sinking feeling in my stomach. “What did I do to deserve this?”

“Oh Rubin,” Gretchen said, “Stop being so melodramatic. You love it when the doctor works on you! Besides, it’s not like you’re coming here to get a shot!”

What I was doing at the vet is what I do about once a month — I get chiropractic and osteopathy treatments. I know, you think I’m spoiled rotten, but for a dog of my young age (I’ll be four in February) I have some structural issues that we’re trying to nip in the bud before they cripple me later on in life. And yes, though the doctor makes me nervous at first, I do like how she moves my body around so it feels better.

But today, despite Gretchen’s comforting words that I wasn’t getting a shot, the doctor decided to use needles anyway. Yep, not only does she do chiropractic and osteopathy, she’s an acupuncturist too! And I’d like to point out that the root word in acupuncture is PUNCTURE!

As you can imagine, I was a wee bit leery. When that first needle went in I looked at both Gretchen and the doctor and said, “Excuse me, but Gretchen said I wasn’t going to get a shot!”

“It’s not a shot, Rubin,” the doctor tried to reassure me, “Even though I do use a needle.”

Of course, I didn’t hear the rest of her explanation because I fell asleep. Yep, me…the nervous poodle, fell asleep. And I have to admit, I sure feel a lot better tonight after my treatment.

I was a little disappointed, though, that I wasn’t allowed to walk with our clients as much, though. Apparently, I needed to rest after my treatment, and rest I did. But I did get some walks in…

…yes, first with Monty who helped me walk Rosie.

“Hey Rubin,” Rosie told me as we walked through the park, “How did you like those needles?” Turns out Rosie gets acupuncture too and while she’s not so keen about the needle at the top of her head, she likes all the rest of it. “Makes you feel kind of gooey, doesn’t it?” she said.

And she’s right, that’s exactly how I felt.

I’m not sure how Oshi and Perrito would respond to needles. They have a hard enough time looking at the camera. Imagine if someone came after them to give them a few punctures along their meridians?

Gemma, I’m sure, would have nothing to do with it, but I bet it would cool her jets a bit. Saber would be grateful for that though today his jets were on full speed ahead!

I guess what I learned today is that even though the plan for the day doesn’t go as expected, unexpected goodness can come out of it! And sometimes a puncture is a good thing.

Until tomorrow,

Rubin

Uh, No!

“Looks like a raincoat day, Rubin.”

Those were the words that greeted me this morning. My response?

“Un, no!” and then I ran upstairs and hid behind the bed.

As you can see, it didn’t work. I had to wear that stinkin’ raincoat most of the day. No matter how many times I tried to rip it off, Gretchen just kept securing the Velcro again and again and I was stuck, like a sausage inside its casing.

Of course, it really rained today and I suppose wearing the raincoat did keep me dry…and warm…but I still really hate that thing. Can’t I just get wet and dry off later?

“Uh, no!” was Gretchen’s response.

Good thing we didn’t have a lot of dogs to walk.

“And it’s a good thing,” Gretchen pointed out, “That most of them own raincoats!”

Yeah, whatever.

The first walk was with Rosie and I sniffed her raincoat while she sniffed mine. “Do you like yours?” I asked.

“It’s okay,” she said. “I tend to catch a chill if I don’t wear it in weather like this.”

“Not me,” I responded. “I don’t catch anything, but still I have to wear it.”

Gemma wears a coat, too, but she doesn’t notice it in the least. “Do you like your coat?” I asked.

“Sure, why wouldn’t I?” and then she barked at a dog she thought might be lurking behind a fence…there was no dog, but Gemma was off and so were we.

When we picked up Saber he said, “You two look like Christmas?”

“We do?” Gemma said surprised.

“Yeah, red and green like Christmas colors!”

“Where’s your coat?” I asked.

“On,” he said.

“No, silly. Not that coat. Where’s your raincoat?”

“What’s a raincoat?” he asked, “And why would I need one?”

Precisely my point!

Until tomorrow,

Rubin

Seeing the Light…

After days and days of endless rain, it was nice today to see this…

…yep, that’s light as in sunshine. We’ve been under such a cloud of gray and rain that I thought I’d never see the sun again, but here it was! Hallelujah! And as you can see, there were other breakthroughs…I got to walk with both Rosie AND Tyson. Sweet!

"He's a good guy, Rosie. It's fun to be with both of you!"

In fact, the sky was so light and bright, Gretchen had to use a flash. Wow, that hasn’t happened in a long, long time!

But it didn’t last long, ya know? On the last walk of the day, the rain came. You can’t see it here, but we’re being pelted by large drops of rain. “Quick,” I told Gretchen, “Snap the photos and let’s get outta here!”

I know it looks like the sky is bright behind us and technically it was bright to the north. What you can’t see, though, is that to the south (the left of the photo) were big, black clouds pelting us with those raindrops I mentioned.

No one but me seemed to mind. Guess I’m tired of the rain. It can’t last forever, can it?

At least we had some light and sunshine today. Guess I should be thankful for what we got. Okay, I’ll practice gratitude.

Still practicing…

Until tomorrow,

Rubin

Oops…I forgot…

I thought I’d written this blog, but then I looked and realized I’d forgotten. Time is crunched so I need to just so ya’ll the photos from Friday and then get crackin’ on Monday’s blog.

What a disappointment I am…time is just running away from me, just like those damn squirrels and my tail!

I bask in the last bit of sun before the torrential rains begin...

Monty basks, too...

Do you see what's behind us? Yep, heavy, heavy rain clouds!

...but the sky stayed relatively light for Oshi and Perrito...

...and Gemma, too though she's ready for rain!

"What rain? I don't see no stinking rain!"

"Can we run through the puddles if it rains?"

"I think I should go home now. I mean, if it's gonna rain and all!"

But the rain stayed away.

No matter where we went...

...or what we did, still no rain.

We could go swimming and get wet, couldn't we?

"Give it up, Saber. She's not going to let us go swimming."

"Did someone saying swimming? How about chasing waves!"

"Seriously, Saber, get over the idea of swimming. Not gonna happen, dude!"

And still it didn't rain...what luck!

Until tomorrow…

Noah and his Bark

I was sound asleep. I mean, I was so sound asleep I don’t think an earthquake could have rumbled me from my slumber…

…but rain did. Yep, torrential, monstrous, cascading…whatever words you can think of that brings to mind the sound that hit our roof this morning. It woke me right up and I was even on the big bed (where I sleep the best, don’t ya know). I looked over at Gretchen and heard her moan. “Oh Rubin, this doesn’t sound good. I think I hear Noah pounding in nails for his bark!”

His bark? I thought to myself. Who’s Noah and what do nails have to do with his bark?

Since I couldn’t sleep, I got up and did some research. Turns out it’s Noah and his Ark .(I think Gretchen had her night guard in or something because I swear she said “bark.”) Anyway, this guy a long, long time ago was told by Dog that he needed to build an Ark, which turns out to be a huge boat and fill it with two of everything — plants, animals, toilet paper, etc. — and prepare to be aboard this boat for a very long time because it was about to rain for 40 days and 40 nights. After my research, I went upstairs and said to Gretchen, who was under her pillow snoring away, “Noah built an ark not a bark and he did it because Dog told him to. Dog also told him to gather up two of everything, so if you were insinuating that the rainstorm we’re experiencing is the beginning of 40 days of biblical rain, you best get yourself out of bed and get started on gathering up two of everything and building us a boat!”

“Go back to bed, Rubin,” is all she said and with that, I huffed and jumped back up onto the big bed and fell back into a deep, deep sleep. Luckily, by the time we headed out the door for our short day of walking, the rain went back to the bible and we stayed fairly dry.

A short day meant only two walks. The first was with Rosie and because Rosie REALLY wanted to play with me, we went to the tennis courts for a very short romp without a second of fetch. Instead, I found a stick and played keep away. Worked for Rosie!

The last walk (which was also the second) was with Gemma and Saber and at the very end of our hour walk, we posed above the city right as the rain returned.

It’s hard to see it in this photo but huge droplets of rain were pelting us as we encouraged Gretchen to hurry up and snap the darn photo.

And tonight, as I type the last lines of today’s blog, the rain has returned from the scriptures and I can hear Gretchen pounding nails into something in the basement. I wonder if she’s building a bark?

Until tomorrow,

Rubin

How’s That Spelled?

When Gretchen gets frustrated or when things don’t go as she’s planned, she makes this sound. It’s kind of like a release of air from her mouth, but it’s more guttural, rumbling slightly at the back of her throat. She made that sound this morning when she looked outside and the rain was flooding from the dark, dark sky.

“What’s happening?” I asked.

Then she made that sound and I said, “How’s that spelled?”

And then she laughed. “I have no idea! Why do you need to know?”

“Well,” I explained I’d love for that sound to be the title of today’s blog because after looking at the weather, it feels like the best title, don’t ya think?”

She had to agree and after our first walk with Monty — a walk were we all wore our raincoats…all of us and Gretchen left her backpack behind because she knew we wouldn’t be taking any photographs — we were all surprised when the black skies turned blue and the wind replaced the rain.

“Well, would you look at that!” Gretchen said and I did. I looked at those blue skies with the utmost gratitude — NO MORE RAINCOAT!

So the first photos of the day don’t exist because we were all covered in raincoats, rain, and trying to find our way in the darkness of what we all thought would be a long, dreary day. Alas, it didn’t turn out the way. And if I could make the sound I can’t spell, I would…not because I was frustrated, but it’s such a great sound that fits all sorts of occasions. This occasion would relief.

But as luck will have it, no one has a clue how to even begin spelling Gretchen’s sound.

Oshi and Perrito were really happy the rain had stopped. As Gretchen likes to say, it’s really hard on the little guys who get just as wet from the bottom as they do from the top — puddles underneath, rain from above. So they basked in the sunshine and I even think Oshi kind of liked it!

By the time we picked up Gemma, the only sounds we could hear was our hair drying off in the warmth of the sun. Gemma laughed at us (she’d missed the rain) and then sidled up to Monty hoping to get as close as she possibly could.

I just soaked up the warmth of the sun…and once positioned, Monty and Gemma did too.

We picked up Woobie, but Gretchen let us rest at home and warm up a bit while Woobie and Saber when for a walk. By the time they headed back to Woobie’s house, the wind had picked up and was slowly, though with purpose, blowing the blue skies away.

Woobie said, “You know, there’s a cartoon character named Dumbo. He was an elephant who had ears like yours. He could fly.”

“Really?” So Saber decided it was a perfect time to see if his ears could life him off the ground.

No luck, but it makes for a great photo, doesn’t it? One I have to make much bigger than normal!

And the changing sky added to the increased winds made for some beautiful (and goofy) photos as well…check it out!

Monty and I hung out for the afternoon and watched those blue skies we admired all day give way to more darkness and a lot more clouds. As I write, there still isn’t any rain, but it’s coming. I can smell…

…or maybe it’s my raincoat that I smell, still wet from this morning’s swim…I mean, walk.

Until tomorrow,

Rubin
