June 8, Monday

posed on the porchIt’s Like This…

Being a dog dog walker who occasionally offers sleepovers, one of the things you need to get used to is saying goodbye.  While I’m a master of saying hello — all wiggles and groans — I’m very silent and a bit put out of place when I must say goodbye.

So today is the day I must say goodbye to my new friend and recent guest, Woobie. While I know I’ll see Woobie in the future (on the trail, at the pea patch, and maybe even for another sleepover), it’s kind of sad to see her go. We’ve shared meals, we’ve shared beds, we’ve shared play time and down time.

And we’ve shared friends…well, I’ve shared my friends with her.

For her last night with us, Jessica and Quillette came over. Gretchen, of course, had to pose us on the porch and somehow got us all with our noses up.  I think someone was grilling a few houses over. Then, while everyone watched the WNBA (Storm versus Sacramento…go Storm!), we all hung out sleeping side by side, our ears alert for any hint of human activity. When the game was over, we went for one last walk and climbed the stairs to bed.

As a special treat, Gretchen took Woobie and me to Marymoor Off-Leash Park and Woobie and I had a great time.  I’m not sure if Woobie has down the trailever been there, but she has a much different approach to the park than I do. The second I’m let off leash, I go running. Woobie is far more cautious. She put her nose to the ground and smelled the bazillion different scents covering the park. And yes, I mean a bazillion.

fetch timeI play fetch until I can hardly catch my breath, but Woobie just put her nose in the hair and sniffed over and over. Then she’d shake, feeling the sun warm her long hair, and off she’d go to find the next scent or visit with another park visitor.

sniffingshaking

What’s great about Marymoor is that a river runs through it. No, not like Norman MacLean or anything, just a river where dogs are allowed to play. There’s nothing I like more than a park that offers off-leash capabilities, wide open spaces for playing fetch, and a cool river in which to refresh.  Woobie liked it too!

I shrink when I get in the water. Woobie expands.

We had a great time and it was a perfect way to send Woobie off with her family.  Until next time, Woobster!

Next up, some boy time. We picked up Marley who was thrilled to see us. He jumped and moaned and jumped some more. We walked over to Oshi and Perrito’s house and Perrito was as thrilled to see Marley as Marley was to see him. Oshi? Well, Oshi likes to stay out of the greetings when they are as lively as the ones between Perrito and Marley are.

We walked through the park thinking we’d play at the little field, but the tennis courts were open (surprisingly) so we head over there where the game of who loves whom more continued. I vote that Perrito is more in love with Marley than the other way around, but I could be wrong…

Perrito tried to teach Marley how to levitate…

"Almost, Marley. Just pick up that back foot!"

"Almost, Marley. Just pick up that back foot!"

"You really must focus!"

"Keep trying, keep trying!"

"Would it help if I pushed from underneath you?"

"Oh, yes, yes, yes. You're almost there!"

"See how there is nothing under the ball? That's what we want with your feet!"

"Good gracious, Perrito. Give the boy a rest!"

"Yes. Perrito it is too hot for levitation practice!"

"Yeah (pant, pant, pant), okay. Enough!"

"Thanks Oshi. I was afraid he'd never let me rest!"

"Yes, Perrito is persistent if he is anything!"

"Yes, Perrito is persistent if he is anything!"

"Whew. I'm tired. Maybe next time I'll levitate!"

"Whew. I'm tired. Maybe next time I'll levitate!"

After we dropped off Oshi and Perrito, Marley hung out at hour house for a bit. We were both tired so we crashed while Gretchen took care of her business.  I hear rumors of another walk though.

Can it be true?

Until tomorrow,

Rubin

How To Wear Out A Woobiegrandpaw

First, before I get started recounting a very, very busy Friday, I’d like to take a moment to wish my Grandpaw a Happy Birthday!!!! The picture to the right is of both of us in our younger years. Time flies, doesn’t it Grandpaw?  Especially when you’re having fun like we are!

Eat cake for me and don’t forget to wag your tail. It lets others know how happy you are.

Love you very much…Rubin, your faithful Granddog.

Okay, now onto a busy day. And when I say busy, I mean whopping busy.

Woobie was dropped off this morning bright and early. She’s staying with us over the weekend and while we know her family is nervous, Woobie has relaxed right into the routine of being a dog dog walker.

It started with just Woobie and me. We did a short loop, knowing how full our schedule was, through Volunteer Park with a stop at the tennis courts to play fetch…

…only Woobie doesn’t play fetch. I had to show her how…

no fetchfetch

On our walk through the park, we stopped at the reservoir, a place where dogs can’t swim (imagine!) with the tip of the Space Needle on the horizon! Hard to see in the first picture, but it’s there in the second!

Do I look bored?  I’m not, I just know how busy our day is and I can’t believe we’re already stopping for photographs!

After Volunteer Park, we picked up Monty and went for a big long walk up through the Mt. Baker neighborhood and then down through the park where we posed for yet another photo! I’m posting the sequence since Gretchen always teases me about my clownish antics. They weren’t really clownish. It’s just that, well, I wanted to play with Monty, not sit quietly for a photo so I kind of sabotaged the posing by rolling into Monty.

I'm badclownish

If you notice, Woobie ignored the whole thing. She’s an exceptionally well-behaved dog.

new friendsMonty really liked Woobie and the feeling was mutual. It’s hard to tell because she always turns away from Monty, but I could tell because they got along fabulously and did a lot of sniffing.

I don’t think Woobie really knew what she was getting herself into today. When she found out I was a dog dog walker, she cocked her head and asked, “What does that mean?”

“It means I walk with other dogs all day long,” I replied.

“That sounds like fun!” Woobie wagged.

“Well, it’s hard work, but it can be lots and lots of fun if you pace yourself right,” I sighed back.

Little did Woobie know how tired she’d be after today. I think she walked about 10 miles and that doesn’t even take into account the play sessions, which were numerous.

After walking with Monty and me, she got to walk with Marley, the boy from up the street. While she definitely liked Monty, she fell in love with Marley. The feeling was mutual.

First, they had to pose on the dreaded grate on Mt. Baker overlooking the city. They didn’t seem to mind too much.

grate photo

And then they came back to my house and decided it was time to really play. At first they did a lot of play bows as a way of getting to know each other. (I watched from the sidelines. Imagine, me watching!)

let's playyes!

And then they chased each other and Woobie’s long, long hair went flying!

flying hairmore flying hair

Did I mention how much hair Woobie has? Well, let me make a point to describe her long flowing locks. Her hair, and I mean each strand, is probably 10 inches long. Someone said she looks like a Lorax and after rereading the Dr. Seuss classic, I have to agree.

lorax

Gretchen had lots of fun taking pictures of her hair.  Not only the front view, but her feet and back end as well.

footback endback end2

That’s a lot a hair, yes?

This is when things got a little complicated. Gretchen took Woobie and Marley back to Marley’s house where he was going to spend the rest of his day only Marley thought otherwise. Two minutes after dropping him off, he jumped two fences (yes, TWO) and came racing down the sidewalk after Gretchen and Woobie who were on their way to pick up Oshi and Perrito. What could Gretchen do?

Guess who spent the rest of the day with us? Yep, Marley, the great escape artist.

So while I rested at home, Woobie, Marley, Oshi, and Perrito tangled their leashes on a walk through the park. Photographs? Are you kidding. Gretchen would have broken something if she’d tried, so she decided, after the walk, to take everyone back to Marley’s yard to see if they wanted to play. Marley was ecstatic to have the company.

let me show you around!yippee!

A whole lot of sniffing and introductions went on…

Until finally, little Perrito took matters into his own hands and learned how to push a big dog around…

Woobie, on the other hand, realized she was tired and found a cool, shady spot to rest up for what was ahead…

Next up, Teabiscuit. Now this was tricky. Lil’ Biscuit isn’t very fond of big dogs (except for me) and so when Gretchen arrived with two new big dogs, you could tell Teabiscuit was none too pleased. In order to get a photo of all three dogs together, Gretchen had to pose them and you can see in this first photo that Teabiscuit has learned to stick up for herself.

"Back off, big guy!

"Back off, big guy!

But soon, after a bit of positioning and wrangling, Gretchen got everyone to relax (even Teabiscuit) for a couple of nice photos.

nice photonice photo2

But you’ll notice… Lil Biscuit is keeping her eye on Marley.

By this time, Woobie is pretty tuckered out. “Wow,” she said upon her return, “This is exhausting work, Rubin!”

Tell me about it. Luckily, while she worked, I got to rest. I needed it after my busy day yesterday and a night of agility practice.

Woobie’s day was not over yet, though. She and Marley drove with Gretchen to meet a new client. Wilson, an 8-month old Golden Retriever. According to Woobie, Wilson is quite a handful though she says I’ll really like him because he’s very playful. “Did you play with him?” I asked.

“No, I was very tired so I let Marley play with him,” she said.

“That was nice of you,” I responded.

By the time Woobie got back to the house, we were ready to walk Marley back to his house since his family was home. Then we all hung out in the backyard for some love…

All the while, Oshi and Perrito watched from their porch next door.

“Are we done now?” Woobie just asked me after I inserted this last photo onto our blog.  She’s sacked out on the kitchen floor, barely able to raise her head to ask me the question.

“Yep, that’ll do it for the day. Good work, Woobie!”

Until Tomorrow,

Rubin

three restingSo much heat, so little water…

90 degrees. That’s the record we broke today.

Let me say it again.

90 degrees.

Now, while you might live in Phoenix or Mexico City or Addis Ababa and think we are wimps, please remember that it’s all relative. For me, it’s hot. For my friends, it’s really hot. Even for the humans in my life, it’s hot and we are all waiting for the heatwave to break, which is supposedly going to happen later today with the arrival of thunderclouds, a strong wind, and yes, rain. Oh goodie.

Ah, rain. I kind of miss it (not so much the thunderstorms). But since we lack rain today, we had to find water in other ways. My first favorite way is at the lake. Not only do I get to go swimming, not only do I get to go with my friends, but I get to play fetch and that, my friends, is the recipe for a grand day.

Let me back up…we started our day by picking up Marley. He was very happy to see us and I’ll admit, I was a lot more friendly today. He’s really kind of fun. We walked up the road to pick up Ollie who was also happy to see us as well as ultra-happy to meet Marley (they are about the same age). Then we walked down through the cool park toward the lake where Gretchen leashed us up (Ollie on a short leash, Marley on a longer one, and me on my stretchy leash). She leashes us up to keep track of us — Ollie stays close by so he gets the shorter leash; Marley, because we are just getting to know him, wears a 30 foot leash, which allows Gretchen to really keep him under control; and well I can get a bit carried away after a refreshing swim and have been known to run around barking and not coming when called. Oops. Therefore a longer leash.Ollie swims!

The outstanding news of today is that Ollie — who has generally been a toe-dipper when it comes to water — showed no hesitancy at all when he dove right in after me! You go Ollie! He’s quite a good swimmer. Must be the breed. Tee hee.

Marley, on the other hand, is getting braver, but lacks the water dog confidence of labs andlook him go poodles (our breed).  He tries though. I have to give him credit for that. He really, really tries AND he really, really wants to try. That’s the important point, isn’t it?

I, of course, lack no confidence when it comes to swimming. Okay, I’ll admit…I lack a little confidence right in the beginning. You know that feeling when your belly hits the cold water. Come on, you know you’re hesitant, too. But once I’m in, I’m totally in and I could swim for days and days and days.

Marley tried playing fetch with my toys, but if they toy went too far out, well, his lack of confidence raised it’s ugly head.

I can get it, I can get it, I can get it...

I can get it, I can get it, I can get it...

Okay, maybe not...

Okay, maybe not...

I'll just stand here and you can throw it at me, okay?

You can do it, Marley. Look at me!

Maybe tomorrow. Today, this is just fine!

Maybe tomorrow. Today, this is just fine!

We played for quite awhile at the beach. I kept swimming, Marley kept wading, and Ollie hung out by the toys trying to choose one to play with.

This one is fun, but...

By the time we walked back to our house, we were all pretty much dry so when we got to my backyard, well, it seemed like a perfect time to play!

Then we had to rest. Ollie and Marley rested by watching me rest in the swimming pool. I tried to entice them in. I showed them how they could lie down in the pool, stretch out, and my favorite, dig at the water spraying it up on their bellies. They weren’t having any of it!

Then we played chase. This is a fun game that involves me running around the yard, up on the deck and back down again while everyone tries find me!

And then we all got tired…

"That was fun, but I'm tired."

"That was fun, but I'm tired."

"I like the shade!"

"I like the shade!"

"Rolling around feels really good!"

"Rolling around feels really good!"

Then Gretchen took Marley home and then Ollie all the while I rested up for our next outing.

And who, pray tell, was that?

TEABISCUIT!  I love going out with Teabiscuit. She loves to do all the things I love to do. She loves to play fetch and she really, really loves to swim, just like me. And darn it, if she’s not a good swimmer than I’m a cat!

"Oh my goodness. Water AND a tennis ball?"

"Oh my goodness. Water AND a tennis ball?"

I'm in heaven!

I'm in heaven!

Gretchen left the leash on Biscuit just for a few throws. She wasn’t quite sure if Teabiscuit would stick around, but I reassured her that nothing could pull either of us away from water and a toy.

So…off went Teabiscuit, the mighty little swimmer!

Isn’t she impressive?  I really like her and I think she really likes me, though I don’t think she’s ready to admit it yet!

I got to swim so more too and then Gretchen got in with us and we all swam around in the cool lake. She couldn’t take photographs of that…kind of difficult to swim and hold the camera at the same time!

looking good

To dry us all off a bit, Gretchen played fetch with Teabiscuit in the grass. She’s not only a good swimmer, she’s a mighty fast little fetcher!

Once again, by the time we walked back up the big hill to Teabiscuit’s house, we were all dry. Well, Gretchen wasn’t, but we were.

I got to rest when we got home a bit before we got into the car and headed to Agility Class. Though it was really hot, I had lots and lots of fun learning to perform on the A-frame (my toughest apparatus), the weave poles, and my personal favorite, the tunnel! I’m going to finish up here, eat some dinner and then fall fast asleep.

Doesn’t the heat make you sleepy? It does me.

Until tomorrow!

Rubin

PS – It’s supposed to be 20 degrees cooler tomorrow. Oh please let it be so!

The Unexpected

MarleyLast night there was a knock on the door. Our neighbor from a block up the street stood at the door with a dog (not hers) on a leash.

“I figured you were a dog walker and you just might know this dog,” said the neighbor.

“Why yes I do,” Gretchen responded. “That’s Marley.”

Turns out Marley dug (and ate) his way out of his side yard and was wandering the neighborhood. To make a long story short, we’re now walking Marley and today was our first outing.

Marley is a nice guy, but boy does he have energy.  We picked him up before it got too hot (record-breaking temperatures today) and headed down to the lake. He was all excited and peed on anything and everything he could find.  By the time we got to the lake, he was raring to go swimming only it turns out, he didn’t really know how.  I had to give him some lessons.

swimmerI’m actually a very good swimmer and with this current heat wave, we’ve been spending a lot of time at the lake so I’m getting lots and lots of practice.

We’re not sure if Marley has ever been to the lake, but he was thrilled to be there today, though he struggled a bit with exactly what to do with all that water.

Where we swim there is a bit of a ledge into the lake. It took me a few times to get the hangwatching of it — stepping down when I couldn’t really see the “down” in the reflection of the water — but now I fly off the step and splash in the water like a pro.

Marley, not so much! He spent the first part of the adventure watching from the shore…and whining. Then he gave it a try…

trying…hesitantly, I might add!

Gretchen moved him over to the part of the lake that has more of a shore and he went straight in… up to his waist…

waist high

He continued to watch me as I swam out for my favorite red toy…but then his excitement got the better of him and soon, Marley was a swimming dog!

still watchingswimming almost

yes!Of course, I had to share my toy with him because he liked it more than the tennis ball.

Don’t think this was an easy thing for me to do. You can’t see it, but Gretchen is holding me back while Marley plays with my toy. water fun

Oh the things a working professional must do to earn a little kibble!

Pretty soon, though, Marley had the hang of it and he was having a good time in the water just like I do every day!

We were both tempted, but showed restraint, when feathered friends swam by…they had their children with them after all…

feathered friends

more fun

We walked home and by the time we got to Marley’s house, we were both completely dried off. Yes, it’s that hot again today. Unexpected new friend unexpectedly swimming in the unexpected heat of June!

Next, we walked to Monty’s house and took him for a short walk before we all piled into the car. It was too hot to walk to the lake again, so we drove this time. Monty loves the lake as much as I do, but he’s not the best swimmer.  I give him credit though…he really tries.

short throwgot it!

But once Monty is on shore, he is a wild man, jumping around asking Gretchen to throw the toy again!

again!Please!

Yes, he is playing with my favorite red toy. Why? Well because Gretchen brought my other favorite toy — a tennis ball ring that is bright yellow and floats. She can throw it farther than the red buoy toy so she let me play with that while I let Monty play with my red buoy.

Only…

….it didn’t go as planned.

One of the reasons I like the yellow ring is that I like to chew it up. I guess I chewed it up so much it got a big hole in it. When Gretchen threw it far out into the lake, well, it sank. Meanwhile, she played with Monty and the red buoy unaware of the fate of my yellow ring.

When I didn’t come back, she looked out and saw me swimming and searching, searching and swimming. Yes, I am a bit obsessed and no matter how much she called me, I was determined to find my yellow toy.

Soon, Gretchen knew what she had to do. She took off her shoes, set down the camera, and dove into the water…not to retrieve my toy, but to force me to come in. She brought the red buoy with her hoping to tempt me, but I was a bit reluctant.  I gave up after awhile, grabbed the red buoy in my mouth and headed back to shore.

Guess who was swimming right out there with us, though?

MONTY!

Have I mentioned that he’s not the best swimmer? Well, Gretchen swam next to him on the way back in lifting his back end up every time it sunk down. When we got back to shore, she threw the red buoy a few more times for him, while I rested from my long swim on the shore.

more fun

How unexpected was that adventure? Well, let’s just say that Gretchen didn’t have on a swimsuit!

We went for a walk after that so we could all dry off before piling back into the car. Lunch was served at home while Gretchen went to walk Oshi and Perrito. It was a short walk because Perrito has a vet appointment so we’re going to go back this afternoon and pick them up again. We’ll have photos then so stay tuned for an update.

I’m pretty sleepy. I think it’s a combination of 85 degrees and lots of unexpected swimming so I’m going to take a nap.

Stay cool!

Rubin

PS — Gretchen just took Oshi and Perrito out again for a short walk. No photos though. Too hot. Can that be an excuse? Even Perrito, who is game for anything, raced back to the cool of his house. It’s almost 90 degrees. I’m hearing rumors of another lake trip for everyone — humans included! Please oh please?

PSS – Gretchen just cooled Monty down with the hose. I’m having nothing to do with that game!

“Give me the lake or give me nothing!” Pawtrick Henry
