A Great Way to End the Week!

Sun, sun, sun. It doesn’t get any better than sun, sun, sun. In fact, there’s not much else to say except sun, sun, sun…and let you see the day in photos.

Enjoy and have a good weekend,

Rubin

Woobie was first. Doesn't she look like an angel?

Then Monty, who also enjoys the sun as much as he enjoys Woobie!

Shade's nice too!

"I like the sun, Rubin, and the water running off the long hairs of my chin! Yummy water!"

"Okay, the shade works, I guess!"

Next up, Oshi (yawning), Perrito (smiling), and Gemma (the protector!)

Where's the shade?

Gemma walked Woobie home and posed in the sun.

Next up, Saber who was part sun and part shade today.

And we got to play fetch! Yahoo!

Monty loves him some fetch, especially in the sun!

But Saber only wants my ball so he chases me EVERYWHERE!

Saber even begs on bended knee to get my fancy ball!

And then he stole Monty's ball...Monty didn't care!

Finally, we wrestle, which is great fun but should be done in the shade!

And Monty watches on from the shade -- tired and happy!

Walking On Sunshine!

I’m so happy it’s warm. I mean, I’m super happy. It makes our work so much more wonderful. It’s wonderful all the time. Don’t get me wrong, but when the rain is falling sideways and the temperatures are dropping, it’s often a challenge to keep a smile on my face.

But today erased all those cold and uncomfortable memories. The sky was robin’s egg blue, the air was warm and clean, and the desire to get frisky was all any of us could think about. Oddly, it wasn’t that busy of a day, but I’m wiped out! Probably because the day involved some serious play time!

First, I went to school and there the students worked on teaching me a new trick. I know the trick, but I play hard to train just to push them to be more patient and try different strategies. The trick is “boogie woogie” which is really just me bowing down and wagging my tail. I’m actually training the students to get on the floor and do the trick with me, though they have yet to figure that out.

Tee Hee.

I rested at home, while Gretchen took Rosie out and Rosie, too was thrilled with the warm and wonderful weather. They played treat fetch at the park and if you look closely, you can actually see the treat in the photo where Rosie is bounding after it.

Of course, she decided it was easier to grab the treats out of the backpack at one point, but eventually she tired out and relaxed in the sun while Gretchen gave her an invigorating massage. You can tell by the smile, Rosie loved that!

Gretchen picked up Gemma on the way back to our house and then we headed over to Saber’s. All three of us were going to go to the dog park, but then we ran into Harry and Kona and decided to play at the little field. How fun was that? Just take a look!

We dropped Gemma off, but since Saber had a bit more time, we did head to the dog park only Gretchen didn’t take any photos because…well, it was kind of crazy with dogs in the water and her camera didn’t need to get bumped or wet. Next time, though, she promises.

And yes, that was it. Three dogs and I’m exhausted. Happily exhausted I should say because who can be grumpy on a gorgeous day like this?

Not me!

Until tomorrow,

Rubin

A Big (Juicy) Leg!

So, on our first walk of the day with Monty he sticks his head into a bunch of low-lying bushes. He does this often and occasionally I’ll go over to check it out, but unless he signals me (which he does with his tail), I don’t always go over. Today, his tail wagged like flag in a hurricane. “Okay,” I thought to myself, “I better check this out!”

Oh. My. Dog! You won’t believe what was in the bushes. A big, fat, juicy chicken leg!!!!! Not a piece of chicken like we sometimes find. Not a bare chicken bone, which we always find around our neighborhood. But a whole chicken leg with all the meat still on it!

SCORE!

I popped that chicken leg in my mouth faster than you can say KFC and I was just about to down it whole when Gretchen grabbed the scruff of my neck and said, “OUT!”

What was I to do? I don’t get to eat chicken because everyone thinks I’m allergic to it and so I miss it very, very much. Plus there was this huge old leg just sitting in the bushes waiting for me to devour it and here was Gretchen giving me a command to spit it out!

I didn’t.

I know, I know I was a bad dog, but golly gee, a whole chicken leg doesn’t walk into your life fully intact very often.

And that’s when Gretchen reached her hand into my mouth and pulled that big, fat, juicy leg out and threw it in the garbage can.

Monty and I just looked at each other.

Okay, okay. I probably should have offered to share it with Monty, he was on the scent originally and I probably shouldn’t have been so excited about finding it and scooping it up with such vigor Gretchen noticed. But it all happened so fast and I am a dog after all and sometimes my instincts take over. Still, I couldn’t believe she threw a perfectly good piece of chicken into the garbage. Can it really be that bad for me?

“You could have choked on it,” Gretchen said. “You can’t down a whole piece of chicken like that and not suffer consequences.”

Suffer consequences? Who’s thinking about consequences when there’s chicken in your mouth?

Whatever. I let it go — the chicken and the moment — and focused instead on the warm, sunny day opening before us. Of course, after the almost chicken in my belly incident, we went home where Monty was fed his lunch (it was chicken in a can, I might point out) and I was given a snack. Gretchen headed out to walk Oshi and Perrito with Gemma where they played a little bit of fetch at the park. I say “little bit” because Gemma will sort of fetch, Oshi has absolutely no interest in it, and Perrito chases the ball but rarely brings it back.

Instead, Oshi rolls in the grass, Perrito grunts at the ball, and Gemma stands around asking, “Is somebody going to move so I can chase them?”

After the boys went home, Gretchen loaded up Gemma into the car so she could meet Zoe. Oh what a meeting it was! Zoe wanted to play and oddly, Gemma was a bit hesitant though it didn’t take her long to warm up to the idea.

And then they went for a walk in the warm, spring sun and seemed mighty pleased with themselves.

After their outing, Gretchen picked up Saber and then came to get Monty and me so we could play some fetch at the little field. Unlike Gemma, Oshi, and Perrito WE know how to play fetch. And I got a very special treat — a new bigger than usual orange and blue ball from Monty’s mom. Oh how I wish I could marry her! She treats me so wonderfully. I love her!

And this big, juicy ball I’m not sharing with anyone!

But it was warm and sunny and we got kind of hot so we walked for a bit to cool down, get some water at our favorite water dishes around the neighborhood, and finally took Saber back home. Monty went home shortly after and I was left to rest while Gretchen went off to her next job at the swim spa for dogs. I got to go there on Saturday and while it was fun, it was much different than I expected. But it’s late, but I’ll write about that tomorrow.

Until then,

Rubin

Shhhhhhh!

I’m doing my best to ignore my cable modem. I’m doing my best not to notice that the internet is working. I fear that if I notice, it will stop working and after a week of it not working, I’d hate to see that happen. For the past three hours, I’ve been focused on catching up on all the blogs. I’ve kept my eyes off the modem and every time I push the PUBLISH key, I hold my breath to see if all the data gets transferred. So far, so good.

Now I’m trying to get today’s blog done, but my eyes are weary and I feel like my luck with the internet just might run out. Therefore, I’m going to do this quick and dirty…well, not dirty, but definitely quick.

Rosie was first and she, like all the dogs (including me) LOVED the sun today. I mean, look at that smile as they played fetch the cookie in the park.

Next was Zoe who refused to play along with the photographing today. She was easily distracted. Very easily, but still the sky was blue and we were happy in the warmth of the sun. More sun means eventually we can go in the lake for a romp! I look forward to the day when we can splash together!

Then Gemma, who’s been on vacation and returned with gusto today. Saber was beside himself with joy and promptly threw himself on the ground to get his dose of lovin’ from Ms. Gemma. But she wasn’t exclusive. I got some as well.

Good to have her back in town!

Then I got to rest while Gretchen walked Playa and Ollie. No Doodles today and now they’ll be no more Playa. A temporary gig, Ollie will be moving into his own house and Playa and Doodles will be constant companions to their mom. Gretchen will miss them, but that’s nature of the business! Still, they too had fun in the sun!

We’re almost to the end…will we make it? Will it publish?

Cross your paws!

Rubin

Up and Running…NOT!

I keep blogging. Gretchen keeps taking pictures. We keep hoping, our paws and fingers crossed that this time the cable service can fix the problem (low to no signal), but even after the guy came to fix it, it’s not fixed.

I’m really bummed. I feel like I’m letting you all down and my routine has been totally blown out of the water and it’s making me a frustrated pup.

But I persevere. One paw in front of the other.

I was so hoping that today, Monday, would be a day when everything was up and running, but well, as you know, it’s not.

Still, we worked and this is how it all flowed (no low signals here!)…

I went to work with Gretchen, but the cable guy called and we had to come back home shortly after. He worked for about 45 minutes, claimed it would be better, but alas, it wasn’t so another person’s coming tomorrow to work on the cables outside.

Gretchen left when the cable guy did to walk Rosie and Tyson. She was happy to spend time with them because they make her laugh. She calls them the two stooges because they often bump into each other with utter excitement.

It happened today apparently. Their Dad opened the gate at the top of the stairs for the siblings to come down to get leashed up. Tyson came first, but then Rosie rumbled out, slamming into Tyson and the two tumbled down the stairs.

They went for a walk up on the ridge and found some beautiful flowers for their photo shoot. I know, they don’t look like the two stooges, but Gretchen says looks can be deceiving.

Gretchen came back to get me and this is when she found out the internet was still not working, so she got back on the phone and complained…only she couldn’t complain long because the line got disconnected. This has happened before when she’s called the cable company, so you can imagine how much it fueled her frustrations.

Mine, too.

So we headed over to two other siblings, Oshi and Perrito. We both needed to laugh at this point. But as we walked, the cable company called back and man, did they get an earful. We listened intently as we played at the courts…and then Perrito decided he REALLY wanted the ball in the backpack at which point Gretchen finished her tirade and played with us….whew!

Next up was Saber. I told him we had to make Gretchen laugh and Saber said, “Don’t we do that every day?” He’s right of course. We play kind of rough, but it always makes Gretchen laugh!

And then we headed down to the lake, which was kind of funny because Saber couldn’t keep his eyes off the water! Sorry, buddy, it’s not warm enough yet!

For the final walk of the day, we walked with Alice who was excited to see us and headed up to the boulevard for our walk.  Alice likes to pose…can you tell?

Of course, none of you are reading this or seeing the photos from the day because our signal is still weak and mostly nonexistent. Sure hope it gets fixed tomorrow!

Until then,

Rubin

Is it Monday, Yet?

Hey, Rubin? Why did you title your post that? You know it’s Friday.

Well, I was hoping it was Monday so that all the photographs and all the writing I’ve been doing could get posted. I mean, isn’t that when the cable company is coming to fix the problem?

Hopefully.

What do you mean, hopefully?

Well, it might not be the cable company’s problem. It might be something else.

Like what, aliens?

No, it could be the computer or the modem or the cables in our house.

Can they fix that?

I don’t know. We have to be patient and just wait and see.

I’m not good at that.

You’ve gotten better.

Wait. Aren’t you supposed to say, “You’re very patient, Rubin. Don’t be so hard on yourself.”

I could, but that wouldn’t exactly be the truth now would it?

Are you saying I’m impatient?

You said you were impatient and I agreed, but said you were getting better.

That doesn’t make me feel very good.

Oh, Rubin. I know you’re frustrated about the computer. I know it’s hard not to do your job well, but sometimes there are things just out of our control.

Like when I get fed?

Yes, I suppose that is out of your control though lately you’ve been so interested in food you’ve given me that look.

What look?

The one that says you’re a starving neglected dog and if someone doesn’t fill your bowl you’ll fade away to nothing.

Now I’m impatient AND demanding. How can you stand to live with me?

You’re being overly dramatic, Rubin. You’re actually a fairly easy dog. Except with the crows.

Always an exception, eh?

You have to admit those crows get under your skin.

That’s because they’re big, bad pests.

Technically, they aren’t pests?

Okay, but they’re loud and they mock me from the fence swooping down to caw at me from the edge of the porch.

That’s just their nature.

And a nasty nature it is.

But if you ignored them, they’d most likely go away. They stay because they know they can get you to chase and bark at them.

And what a fine job I do of that!

The neighbors don’t really appreciate it, though.

Really? I think they should thank me.

At 6:30 in the morning, I don’t think they’re interested in thanking you for barking.

Oh.

It’s okay. We’ll keep working on your impulse control.

I’ll add that to my list.

What list?

The same one that has impatient and demanding on it; now I can add impulsive.

You really are bent out of shape about this whole computer thing, aren’t you?

Yeah, I guess I am. I don’t like to feel so incomplete when I’m doing my job.

Everyone understands, buddy.

Do they? Do they really?

Sure. They know there are technical problems that arise and that everything doesn’t run as smoothly as we’d like.

You can say that again. It feels like there’s always something that gets in the way of the day running smoothly.

Little things really. I mean, compared to the problems that could arise, our day only has a few bumps, don’t you think?

Yeah, but this computer problem feels like a big bump and I don’t like big bumps.

Me either, but again, there’s nothing we can do about it except wait…

…and hope that they fix it on Monday.

Yes, and hope they can fix it on Monday.

(Long paws)

Is it Monday, yet?

Sigh.

Until then,

Rubin

Happy Birthday, Grandma!

I must take a moment here to wish my Grandma a Happy Birthday.  I love my Grandma for many reasons, but chief among them — she loves to cook and I love to sit in the kitchen and wait for delectable goodies to fall to the floor. I think she appreciates my help when they do. I mean I’m cute AND I clean. What more could a Grandmother ask in a Granddog?

But onto the post…

Day Two Without

When we first started the blog, I was kind of hesitant. “Who’s going to read it?” I asked Gretchen.

“Our clients, our families, friends, friends of friends,” she reassured me.

Still, I found it hard to believe that my words – the humble and simple thoughts of a Labradoodle – would be worth reading. Over the almost two years of writing this blog, though, I’ve come to depend upon the daily, solitary introspection reflecting on my day and reflecting on deeper thoughts as well.

So when our internet went down, I was surprised at how hard I took it. “What? You mean I can’t write tonight?” I tantrumed for a while.

“I know, Rubin,” Gretchen said, “We’ve grown so used to it, but 10-15 years ago, we wouldn’t have even had this ability.”

“You’re kidding, right?” I was dumbfounded.

“Nope. Back in the day,” she explained, “we would have had to leave a note for our clients and while we could still leave them with photos of the month’s events, there’s no way we could have posted them for the whole world to see.”

Astonishing.

So while I feel odd writing today’s events knowing it’s not going to be posted until our internet is fixed (next Monday, cross your paws!), I guess it could have been worse. I could have been a dog dog walker way back when and never had the chance to share my life and thoughts with the world.

Today is Thursday. And while sometimes we have busy Thursdays, today was not. First up was Woobie who we picked up on our way home from school. She was thrilled, as always to see us, and we went on a walk through the park and back to our house so Woobsters (that’s what Gretchen calls her) could spend some time with me. It’s nice to have her company.

Gretchen left us to walk Rosie who one day is just going to have to get over her apprehension and meet me. I mean, how bad can it be?

But not today. Today Rosie and Gretchen took a nice spin up through the neighborhoods checking out the weather conditions as well as the flowers. Most of the tulips are gone, but some very beautiful trees are in bloom and everything is might green what with all this funky weather. And Gretchen focused on Rosie’s beautiful face. Maybe that’s why she’s name Rosie because she’s as beautiful as a Rose?

After Rosie, Gretchen came home to have some lunch. Woobie and I were both happy to see her. What with Gretchen’s new job, she’s not been home as much in the evenings and frankly, I kind of miss her.

After lunch, Woobie and I went with Gretchen to pick up Saber who was happy to have not only me for a playmate, but Woobie as well. Only Woobie isn’t as interested in Saber as Saber is in her. He doesn’t take offense, though. Nope, he just slams into me like it’s no big deal.

I’m going to be home alone for a while as Gretchen goes back to the hydrotherapy pool again tonight. And she’s working on Friday night as well. I’m kind of bummed, though I’ve heard rumors that I’ll get to go to work with her on Saturday and that means I’ll get to test drive the spa.

Not a bad deal, eh? And yes, I’ll be sure to write about it! I mean, you are out there reading it, aren’t you?

Until tomorrow,

Rubin

A Moment to Complain

I may be just a dog, but I work hard. Really hard. What with teaching in the mornings, walking dogs all day, and then taking care of my own family I’m one tired pooch at the end of the day. So when I go to the computer to finish up the day with my Dog Blog and the internet provider is not providing, well, I get mighty uppity.

We pay a lot of money (hard earned money) for our cable service and for the past couple of weeks, that service has been anything but stellar. How am I supposed to write my blog? How am I supposed to communicate with my clients? How am I supposed to read the newspaper (yes, I read it) or research information on new dog toys?

And then, when Gretchen called the provider (silly name, provider!) to check out why it’s not working they said, “Gee, something weird is going on. Not sure what it is. We can get someone out there next Monday.”

NEXT MONDAY?????

What’s a working dog to do?

Luckily, the computer still works so for now, I’m writing my blogs on a word document and when the internet works again (which sometimes it does, but most of the time doesn’t), I will have what I need to post already written.

But who knows when that might be. Hopefully it will be Monday afternoon, but I’m not going to hold my breath.

Meanwhile, we’re working. Today went like this:

To school. Yes, those students are writing madly on the last chapters of their stories and I am providing invaluable help.

Then Monty! In times of stress, it’s a great comfort to have a friend like Monty. A romp with him can take my troubled mind off anything!

Of course, it helps that we walked with the boys next door – Oshi and Perrito. They’re pretty darn cute and their clownish antics had me laughing within the first 5 minutes of our walk. I mean, in no time flat they can wrap up their leashes around Gretchen’s legs and give that look like, “What? I didn’t do nothin’!” Makes me double over every time!

And today was also special because Monty got to meet Zoe. I think Monty should change his name to Romeo. Geez! He has a way with the ladies let me tell you. He can make each girl feel like she’s the only dog in the world. How does he do that?

As you can see from my expression, I’m not impressed with the mini-love affair before me!

Saber did a lot to take my mind off my computer troubles as well. I mean, getting slammed into for 15 minutes can take one’s mind off anything, don’t you think? And when Saber found a full water bottle at the court and started biting it and the water came spilling out all over him…well, that was enough to make Monty and me laugh hysterically and forget all about any woes in the world!

But then I came home and not only was the computer STILL NOT WORKING, but Gretchen was off to her next job at the hydrotherapy pool. What’s a dog to do? No one home, the internet is down, and my work is done? Good thing I’m not the kind of dog who rips things up because if I were, now would be a good time to do it!

Until tomorrow,

Rubin

Memorization

We headed out early this morning for a walk up to our work at school. All along the way, Gretchen is saying words like transverse, dorsal, median, sagittal. I looked at her, stumped.

“What’s with the foreign language?” I asked.

“I’m trying to remember all the body planes,” she responded as if I’d know what a body plane was.

“Uh, okay,” I mumbled back, slightly distracted by a bold squirrel crossing my path. And then she starts in with Occiput, Crest, Withers, Carpus, Metacarpus, Croup, Stifle and I’m totally lost.

“Did you get enough sleep?” I ask. And then she laughs.

“Sorry, Ruby (one of my many nicknames). I’m trying to remember all the regions of a dog’s body.”

Oh. Finally. I get it. She’s studying “Well, can I help?”

“You know that might not be a bad idea,” she says. “When we get home tonight, can I practice identifying your body parts?”

“Uh, sure,” I say, a bit embarrassed, “though that sounds a bit personal.”

And then we both giggle and continue on our walk.

Not a lot happened at school today. The students are on the last chapters of their long stories and were focused on the task at hand. We walked back home where I napped while Gretchen headed out to walk Rosie. Of course, I kept dreaming about words like manus, pes, thorax, occiput, flank…geez, this schooling thing is going to be hard on both of us!

Now Rosie is a study in post-surgical stiffness. She walks with a limp (though a bouncy one) and her back legs move sideways, not forward.

It doesn’t seem to stop her, though. She’s still very happy  and relatively pain free as she walks along and occasionally bursts into a little sprint. Every time Rosie sprints ahead, Gretchen laughs because Rosie is almost gleeful when she gets to go outside and check out the ever changing weather from the gardens on the hill.

Of course, she doesn’t much like her photo taken as she often sticks out her tongue when Gretchen makes the attempt. Wish I could do that!

I was curious about the weather myself so it was nice when Gretchen returned home to pick me up for our walk with Zoe. Normally, Zoe goes with our friend, Maureen (of Mo’s Dog Walking) to the dog park, but Zoe has also had knee surgery so for the past few weeks, she’s been confined to leashed-walks. Well yesterday, Zoe got to go out with Maureen and on our walk, we talked about how much fun Zoe had at the dog park, seeing her pack friends again, and hanging out with Maureen.

“It was a blast!” Zoe exclaimed.

“I bet it was good to see your friends again,” I said.

“Oh, Rubin. You’ll never guess. There were three of us Bernese dogs and you know, we’re so very sweet, I think Maureen had the best Monday ever!”

“How does your knee feel today?” I asked.

“It’s a bit stiff, but not bad,” Zoe told me. “But I sure don’t have the same kind of stamina as I did before the surgery.”

“Don’t worry,” I told her, “You’ll get back into shape. Maybe we should play a little so you can build up your endurance.”

“Oh good idea! you start,” she said and I did! I think I overwhelmed her at first, but if we had been let off leash, we would have whooped it up but good!

Next was Saber. I was feeling might frisky by then and all those anatomy words flew right out of my head. Saber was in a frisky mood too and while he is in perfect health right now, anatomically speaking, we have to be careful not to overstress his still developing body.

Too bad he doesn’t understand that my body shouldn’t be overstressed! This next photo is kind of blurry, but do you see how he pushes me around? Ridiculous!

We went for a walk after getting out our ya-yas and then Gretchen posed us by a beautiful Rhododendron. Meanwhile, the clouds were gathering again and I had the feeling it was going to rain. Boy did it, but luckily Saber made it home before it did and I made it home as well.

But by the time Gretchen drove to Ollie, Playa, and Doodle’s house, the rain had stopped, though she didn’t believe it would stop for long so Playa and Doodles wore their raincoats. Mine was in the car for Ollie, but it turns out they didn’t really need them. No rain until the last few minutes of the walk.

Yes, Doodles went along for the walk, which is not a common occurrence. He gets kind of scared, but he finds comfort and solace in his great protector — Playa. No matter where they go, Doodles keeps Playa close by, which is sometimes hard to do because Playa likes to be at the very, very end of the leash exploring the world. She’s definitely part Husky!

Ollie, Playa, and Doodles are all in pretty good anatomical shape, but Gretchen tells me she practiced identifying body parts on them anyway. Ollie thought that was great because it meant he got petted.

Doodles was skeptical…

…and Playa, well, Playa is just interested in going somewhere so she whined a bit while Gretchen labeled her body– abdomen, loin, flank!

I suppose it’s important for Gretchen to study and I know I should do what I can to help her out, but sometimes I just want to play, you know because as they say, “All work and no work makes Rubin a dull boy!”

Until Tomorrow,

Rubin

The Art of Racing the Rain

There’s a popular book out called “The Art of Racing IN the Rain” written by a local writer, but I think he should have named it “The Art of Racing the Rain” because we do that a lot more around Seattle than actually racing IN the rain. But Gretchen tells (she read the book) that the book has to do with racing cars, not dogs racing around in the rain.

Oh.

Well, today we raced the rain not in it even though we thought the weather was going to be blue skies and wind. It was definitely wind, though it’s hard to tell from this photo of Rosie and Tyson since they short hair that doesn’t really blow around in the wind. And the blue skies hung around far longer than we could have ever imagined.

Usually, the rain clouds travel up from the south or across from the west and while the wind came from that direction today, the clouds we eventually saw (and raced away from) raced down from the north. It was odd. Northern clouds usually mean snow, but that wouldn’t be right this time of year, would it?

But those clouds weren’t there as we walked to school the morning and they weren’t there when we walked home. There was just wind, blowing strong and steady with a few big gusts that scattered seed pods across the street. When Gretchen headed out to walk Rosie and Tyson, leaving me behind, there was no hint that rainclouds were on the way. In fact, it was so beautiful out, Tyson asked in his most serious voice, “I don’t mean to be pushy, but can we play at the tennis courts?”

And so off they went, first for a short walk and then to the tennis courts where Tyson chased the ball and Rosie chased after treats that were carried farther than normal since the wind lofted them a much greater distance.

They played so much, Tyson’s most serious face relaxed into a happy grin!

Gretchen came back to get me after that and when we went next door to get the boys — Oshi and Perrito – clouds were just gathering on the northern horizon. “That doesn’t look promising,” I said to Gretchen, but she estimated we had a few hours before the clouds made it to our location. Still, it was odd that the clouds were moving south even though the wind was pushing north. It was almost like we were caught up in a swirl — a chance of rain whirlpool.

Oshi and Perrito didn’t care. They just raced along the walk sniffing and smelling and tangling their leashes as they went along. When we stopped for a photo, they were happy for the sun and basked in its warmth since the bench and trees sheltered us from the wind.

Now you may be wondering why Oshi and Perrito are always on a bench. Well, they have a habit of wandering off. Not far and not dangerously, but to the point where we have to scurry around to gather them back up. When they are the bench, with their leashes behind them, they don’t jump off or race away. Hence, always a bench shot unless we’re running around on purpose!

Like at the tennis courts…but when we’re “posing” we have to keep a close eye on the wandering puppies or they’ll end up at opposite ends of the city — Oshi as close to home as he can get and Perrito lost in the fun and thrill of every sound and scent. And when the wind blows those sounds and scents are abundant!

Next up was Saber, but we drove to his house because after his walk, we needed to drive to Alice’s house. Saber and I played at the small first, though, so that Saber could drain some of his endless puppy energy. It didn’t take long since despite the wind, it felt pretty warm. Not warm enough to stop us from wrestling, but still warm enough that we had to play in the shade for awhile.

We went for a walk after that up on the ridge and that’s when we worried a bit more about the rainclouds. They were gathering big and black to the north and we could see the rain coming down in dark gray sheets. That’s when got an idea. “Let’s go back to the car,” she said, “And head over to Alice’s house before it rains.”

“With Saber?” I asked.

“With me?” he asked perplexed.

“Yep,” said Gretchen, “both of you.”

“Yippee skippy!” Saber sang, dance like a walrus at the end of his leash.

So we piled into the car, drove to Alice’s house, waited for her to come out on the porch (she’s always a little scared about our arrival so Gretchen waits on the porch for her to muster up the courage), and then all of us went for a walk. Now Alice, being the kind of skittish girl that she is, was a bit leery of Saber, but Saber, being a dog of good nature, was patient and polite and soon enough, we were all walking (and posing) side by side.

We thought for sure that the rain would come after we dropped Alice off, but it didn’t. And then, we thought for sure it would rain after we dropped Saber off, but it didn’t.

“Why’d we do all that racing around?” I asked Gretchen.

“I guess I miscalculated,” she said. And even as I type, those threatening rainclouds appear to be skirting around us.

So while we have not mastered the art of racing the rain, we may have to master the art of racing IN the rain tomorrow. We’ll see.

Until then,

Rubin
