She Did What?

I love Gretchen. I love her dearly, but she came home tonight with over a hundred and fifty photographs from our work today. What am I supposed to do with that? Does she know how long it takes to write the blog AND insert pictures? I know, I know. We walked 9 dogs today. That’s a record, so no wonder there are so many photographs. I mean, I’ve winnowed it down to 53 (more than half), but still this will take me hours!

Hey, Rubin?

Yes? (And I have a very skeptical look on my face!)

I think you can just insert all the photographs all at once if you want to and not have to do each one individually.

Really?

Try it.

But what about my witticisms? What about my golden tongue, my poetic license, my gift with the human word?

I think everyone would completely understand if you just inserted the photos of the day.

Are you saying they don’t read this blog?

Oh no. They read it. What I’m saying is they’d understand that after walking 9 dogs you’re a little tired and need some rest. I’m sure they’d forgive you for taking a blogging break.

Hmmmm…okay, I’ll give it a try…

That wasn’t too hard, was it?

No. I could get used to this.

(Yawn!) Goodnight everyone!

Rubin

Dry Spots

dry benchI’ll admit it up front. We don’t have a lot of photos today simply because the rain deterred us. I know, you’re thinking, why are Oshi and Perrito dry?

Good question. We should have taken a photo of the sky. When Gretchen took this photo, the sky was actually blue above us, but just to the south, the sky was a black sheet rippling towards us.

So, while our walk with Oshi and Perrito (and Monty, too) started out dry, it ended just when that black sheet ripped wide open with a heavy downpour and gusty winds.

Jeez. How soon one forgets what a good rainstorm can do to your curly coat. All day long we just hunted for dry spots so Gretchen could take photos and we could all open our eyes — something that’s hard to do when the rain is coming at you sideways.

So first up was a relatively dry walk with Monty, Oshi, and Perrito. Yes, Gretchen took all four of us out even though we’re a handful, in hopes of avoiding too much walking in the rain. As it was, she went through 3 raincoats, two pairs of shoes and 3 pairs of socks. Me? I’m just super curly right now!

look at the skycoming in sideways

We dropped off the boys, as I’ve said, just as the skies opened up. Monty and I then went to get Saber while Gretchen pulled her rain gear out of her backpack. Saber didn’t seem to mind the water, but in order to get a photograph, we had to find yet another dry spot. This time, the tunnel!

sort of drytunnel

Monty and I saw Saber twice today and both times it was raining like the dickens (an expression I like way more than it was raining cats and dogs…whoever thought of that?). So, this afternoon, we didn’t take any photographs of the three of us because frankly, it was way too soggy.

After our first walk with Saber, Gretchen took Monty and me home, gave us a good rub down, fed us some lunch, and then headed over (in the car, something she rarely does) to fetch Bella. Bella was a little miffed that she had to wear my raincoat, but by the time they headed out the door, the rain was thick and drenching. I guess she really needed the coat. In fact, the only dry spot was when they returned back to Bella’s house and Gretchen attempted to dry off Bella in the back of the car. Bella was 1) Not so sure about the back of the car…

yikes

2) Not convinced she needed drying off, but I’ll let the photo tell the truth…

wet dog

And 3) would rather play with the towel than get rubbed down. Silly girl.

After walking Saber and Monty one more time and walking both of them home, we ate our dinners and then headed out for one last walk with Wilson. Well, I didn’t get to go. I was told I had to rest, but I really wanted to go out because it wasn’t raining and I’d get to play with Wilson. Gretchen insisted, so I decided to type up the blog until she returned with photos.

Guess what? Gretchen just got back and not only did she play with Wilson, but Dixie, Gypsy, AND Saber were out and about. Man, I really missed some fun! Oh well, I got the blog done. That’s one consolation!

It got too dark to get everyone’s photograph, but when Gretchen came home, I could certainly smell my friends on her. Darn it all!

The rest of the week looks like the same kind of weather. Jeez. And I complained about the heat this summer. What was I thinking?

Until tomorrow,

Rubin

All This and Agility, Too?

come here!Let me tell you about my day. Full. Full. Full. So full my paws are sloppy on this keyboard. Truly, I’ve walked dogs all day and then, as a treat, I got to go to agility class. Oh how I love agility class. It’s been awhile since we last attended, but Gretchen was impressed by how much I remembered. I can’t say I was as impressed with what she remembered, but I’ll forgive her. She walked every dog today. I just walked a few.

She was really nice that way because she let me rest up because she knew I had class tonight. So I shouldn’t complain. I might be tired, but she must be wiped.

And here’s why…

First up was a busy morning at school. Both of us went. I helped the students get settled down to work and Gretchen read to them from this novel they’ve been working through. Oh, the kids love that book and so do I especially after I curl up under one student’s desk or another. Gretchen’s voice just puts me to sleep. Ollie

But then it was down to walking and that job started with Ollie who we picked up on our way to Saber’s house!

Ollie and Saber always like to see each other, but then Ollie spends his time looking for squirrels and Saber spends his time trying to figure out where we’re going and when those treats are going to come out of Gretchen’s pocket.

Well, today we went for a nice walk and then came back to the house for a bit of a romp. Truth of the matter, Saber and I mostly romped while Ollie, being of a more delicate nature, watched us. Oh, don’t get me wrong. He stepped in every now and then — I call it play wrestling — but all and all, Ollie likes to stay clean.

The weather report warned of heavy rain and lots of wind. No such thing on this first walk, but by the time Gretchen took Saber home (after Ollie went home) a few sprinkles came down. Enough sprinkles that her next dog, as I was rest at home, had to wear her raincoat. Better her than me!

The next dog? Sweet Rosie!

rainingleaf dog

Isn’t she pretty in the leaves? Gretchen had to take this shot under the trees because of all the dogs that got walked today, Rosie’s was the wettest. Good thing she has a nice raincoat. Good thing I never had to wear one!

Next up was Gemma, who also got to spend some times in the leaves!

leaveslooking like a leaf

Now, if you’ve been paying close attention to my dog blog, you’ll notice something new and different about Ms. Gemma.

Yes, she isn’t wearing a cast, but that’s not it. She has a new collar — a spiffy braided collar with a bone clasp. Sweet.

new collar

Gretchen kept expecting more rain, so much more that she put my red coat onto Bella when they went for a walk. While it rained some, the rain really started to wane by the time they were under way. Me? I’m resting comfortably at home in a dry house without wearing a raincoat! Yippee! Bella first went to the tennis courts before her walk. According to Gretchen, she’s really got the hang of playing fetch. You go, girl!

nice coatyou like?

Doesn’t Bella look good in that coat? So good, I think we should donate it to her.

Wait one minute, mister!

Sorry, Gretchen. I didn’t realize you were reading over my shoulder. Let’s look at some of those other photos you took today, okay?

fetch

funny earmy bottom's wet

Okay, now that I look more closely, that coat doesn’t quite fit Bella now, does it? Oh well. I guess I get to keep it. Yippee (limp yippee, that is!)

After their play time, Bella and Gretchen went for a walk up to the gardens where there’s a dog bowl so Bella can catch a drink after playing fetch. On the way, Gretchen saw this!

hawk

Yep, that’s a hawk. Gretchen thinks it’s a Cooper’s hawk, but she couldn’t get too close because…well, this happened!

flyingaway

The lighting wasn’t the best – all those gray clouds — but Gretchen was thrilled to have snapped these photos. Usually the hawk flies away (yes, we’ve seen it before) when she’s trying desperately and quietly trying to get her camera out of her backpack.

Bella went home fairly dry and by the time we picked up Saber again, the sky was clearing up, though Gretchen’s camera had drops of rain still on it from the shots of the hawk.

still chasinggoing under

Aside from chasing me and following me everywhere I go, Saber LOVES to go under me. I kind of hate it, but what’s a dog to do? Of course, Saber is getting the hang of fetch, too, and in fact, is doing a great job catching the ball in air…or trying to!

Saber and Gretchen walked him home for more rest and then Saber got to rest as well, but at his house. Gretchen headed over to get Wilson who got to play fetch by himself, though on his way back to his house, they picked me up for the rest of the walk. That was nice.

Those leaves still capture the camera, don’t they?

fetch timepretty boy

I wish I’d gotten to play fetch with Wilson, but I guess it was important for me to rest up for my agility class. Oh boy, that was really fun, but it’s way too dark to take photos of me flying over jumps, weaving through the poles, and making the teeter-totter go down. Besides, Gretchen is too busy telling me which way to go and when to stop. It would be impossible for her to take photos at the same time.

Oh well.

Until tomorrow,

Rubin

And So It Begins

the fallen

All those photographs we’ve been taking of the beautiful colors on all the trees in our neighborhood are making their way down, down, down. I call them “The Fallen” since the slow, but steady downward spiral begins. It’s sad, in one way, but in another, it’s a reflection of nature’s constancy. Nope, there’s no stopping that mother of all mothers.

Not only are the leaves starting to fall, but the temperatures as well. This weekend, the highs were in the mid-60s and then just like that, the mornings are in the upper 30′s and the thermostat rarely peaks above 55 degrees. And the wind, don’t get me started on the wind. It picked up a lot today — blowing in some kind of front, they say — and so the leaves have moved from the tops of trees, to a blanket of color underneath the soon to be barren trees.

But I don’t mind. Okay, I mind a little because now the back door doesn’t stay open and I can’t go in and out at my leisure. Now I have to ask. Not fun having to ask. People are busy around here and sometimes they don’t think I really need to go out. They might be right, but it’s still kind of bummer not to have that freedom.

And now the threat of that red raincoat looms large. No rain today, but the threat is there. Trust me.

looking overWe started our day at school. No kids, though, just me and Gretchen doing work. Well, she works and I watch. Intently. Then she dropped me off at home while she took out Rosie and Tyson.

They headed up over the hill to check out the views and report on how the other side is doing on foliage depletion. It’s amazing, but on our side of the hill, the temperature is always a bit colder, the leaves turn quicker, and the views, well the views are nearly as magnificent. Okay, we get the beautiful trees, but not the wide expanse of the lake or the mountain to the south. Yes, Mt. Rainier was out today and she looked mighty cold.

Rosie and Tyson weren’t. They’d hiked up over the hill and back down and checked out the scenery (I-90) from the viewpoint. Tyson was the first to look. Rosie was a bit nervous about the drop. Tyson convinced her it was okay to look.

lookee herewow

mighty Tytogether

Then Gretchen decided to head back home through the tunnel. Oops. Rosie wasn’t into that so much. She got about a quarter of the way into the tunnel and then stopped dead in her tracks. Even treats didn’t work. The only thing that worked was tying Rosie’s leash to Tyson’s. When Tyson moved (confidently) Rosie did too. It usually takes about four minutes to get through the tunnel. It took the three of them about ten minutes. But they did it and that’s a great accomplishment for Ms. Rosie. Way to go, girl!

Next up, Gretchen got me and then we picked up Perrito and Oshi. Perrito is still wearing his lamp shade because of his hernia. Yes, dogs can get hernias. Go figure. Anyway, we went for a frisky walk and then stopped by the pretty leaves spread all around. And guess what happened? I told you they were falling!

lampshade leavesthe fallen

Oshi didn’t seem to care, but he wouldn’t look at the camera no matter how much Gretchen called to him. So, maybe he was too embarrassed to look. Hard to tell.

I got to get warm and rest up while Gretchen took Bella out for a romp and a walk. She had intended to do the walk first, but once they past the little field, Bella begged to play fetch. This is her begging face!

begging face

Luckily, Gretchen had the long line in her pack so they played lots of fetch before they headed out on their walk. Oh, and the practiced their commands like sit and down and drop.

fetchyeehaw

sticks are good toofetch again

sit commandBella’s really good at the sit command when Gretchen is holding the ball. Sometimes she’s not the greatest at the sit command, though. She gets easily distracted. So Gretchen ends up waiting.

That’s what happened with this shot. Gretchen put the ball behind her back and asked for Bella to sit. No go. So Gretchen waited. Bella looked around for a bit, sniffed the ground, and did everything she could think of not to sit.

But then she did and gave this most perturbed look as if to say, “Okay, I’m sitting. Where’s the ball?”

She’s lucky Gretchen has a sense of humor!

After Bella went home, Gretchen picked me up again and we went over to Saber’s house. He’s a sleepy little guy when he first comes out of the kennel, but it doesn’t take him long (and a trip to the tennis courts) for him to get silly fast!

coming after meboth

Even though we both have a ball to play with, Saber always wants mine. Gretchen says he reminds her of me at that age, but I have no memory of stealing anyone else’s treasured toys. No memory whatsoever.

Saber likes to get me to be interested in his toy by pushing it at me every chance he gets. Good thing I have some fancy dance moves!

dance movesmore dance moves

see it?don't ya want it?

While I can stand the colder weather and the falling leaves, the wind, and the coming rain, what I don’t like about this time of year is that it’s getting darker and darker, earlier and earlier. This means that our evening walks with Wilson are going to be harder and harder to document, but luckily Gretchen’s fancy camera comes with a flash. Of course, the only thing the flash could focus on were our glowing balls and so we got some pretty eerie and funny shots! Gretchen kept calling me Rudolph for some reason and Wilson looks like he has a very long, green tongue!

Well, Halloween is on its way!

It’s unavoidable, I guess, this changing of the seasons. All we can do is sigh, watch the leaves fall and say to ourselves yet again, “And so it begins.”

Until tomorrow,

Rubin

Okay, I’ll Admit It

tired puppyThis, my friends, is the look of one very tired puppy. It’s been a fun week, but it’s also made me, sorry for the pun, dog tired. While I got to walk and play with some of my friends today, Gretchen was kind enough to leave me at home for a rest day and I much appreciated it. Yes, during the week Gretchen probably walks farther than I do, but she doesn’t have to play with the dogs like I do. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy those play times very much, but they can take a toll on my body and my stamina. And today, I felt that toll right down to the tip of my very curly tail.

So, if you’ll allow me, I’d like to present the day’s work with only a few words and mostly photos.

Don’t worry. I’ll be my old self next week after a nice weekend of rest, but boy do I ever need that weekend of rest!

Here goes…first up, was Woobie and Saber — yes, together — and while Woobie stayed out of our way, Saber and I knocked about in the yard. Oh, and we walked, too. Lots. In between Saber’s house and Woobie’s we hoofed it down through the parks and up through the neighborhoods.

See all those wet spots by Woobie? Well, when Woobie takes a drink, there’s usually a trail of spots in her wake. Who could blame her with hair like this…

Woobie is such happy and patient dog, there was no way Saber wasn’t going to like. With much dog wrangling on Gretchen’s part, she even got a photo of all three of us, though it looks like I’m chewing on thyme…(chewing on time?).

chewing on time

Saber and I walked Woobie home and then I walked Saber back to his house. Then Gretchen and I picked up Oshi and Perrito from next door, went on a walk, and then all hung out on the back porch. Oshi and Perrito really liked that as often they see us playing in the backyard from their deck.

Gretchen left me behind and took the boys home then walked over to meet up with Bella who was a very well-behaved dog today. So well-behaved, in fact, Gretchen walked her down to the lake where Bella splashed around in the water! She loved it! Bella, that is.

splashlet's go

Bella was not only interested in the water. She was also VERY interested in the young couple picnicking by the lake. Luckily, Gretchen had a leash on Bella though Bella begged to have Gretchen take it off. No can do, sweetpea!

After a few more splashes, Bella headed home with Gretchen and then Gretchen stopped by Saber’s house one last time for the last walk of the day. He was tired, too, so they went for a walk to the dog park to check out the action. On their way, they stopped for a photo shoot at the peace sculpture.

peace archsmile guy

At the peace sculpture are a bunch of different rocks, supposedly for people to sit on. Once again, Gretchen put on her wrangler’s hat and did her best to get young Saber to pose on the rock.

Nice work…both of you!

on the rock

When they got to the dog park, there was only one dog playing. Gretchen decided it might be fun for Saber to run around a little so in they went. Saber had a great time with his new friend, Byron!

chasingbyron

But Saber was pretty tuckered from our long walk earlier, his romp time with me, and the running around with Byron, so when he got back home, he crawled into his crate and curled right up for a nap.

Speaking of naps, I was doing fine catching my forty winks until Jessica showed up with Quillette. When Gretchen got home, Quillette sang her joy in the back yard and then sidled up for some rump scratches. Quillette loves her rump scratched as you can tell from her happy smile.

happy Qrump smile

I love Jessica and Quillette and I was happy to hang with them, but I have to admit I am glad this day is officially over!

Get some rest everyone! We’ll be back at it on Monday.

Until then,

birthday girlReasons to Celebrate

We have two official celebrations here at Wags n’ Words. The first belongs to my good friend, Gemma who on this day, one year ago, was brought into the world.

Wow. She finally made it! Gemma’s been through a lot in her first year and has a scarred ear and a slight limp to show for it all, but let me tell you something — if you look up the word resilient in the dictionary, you’ll see Little Ms. Gemma’s photograph.  And if you look up tenacious, same thing only a different picture.

This little dog can overcome anything and often walks around the world looking for something interesting to get into. I mean, just making it out the front door and down the steps can be an adventure especially if the crazy dog next door is out. And then, on the walk, if there are squirrels or other dogs, Gemma jumps up and down and says, “Rubin, Rubin, Rubin! Did you see that? Did you see that? Come on! Let’s go check it out!”

You gotta love her though because she’s the most faithful terrier I’ve ever met and I’m proud to call her my friend.

For her birthday, we brought over Ollie, but since Gemma is still recovering from a broken toe, we just went for a walk. Gretchen tried really hard to get a birthday photo, but it’s hard to get us all to pay attention! I mean, when the leaves fall on the trees behind us, we all think there are squirrels about!

looking upthree friends

After our walk with Gemma and Ollie, Gretchen and I stopped by to pick up Alice. Alice is so funny. She barks and barks and barks and then figures out it’s us and then she gets all wiggly. Kind of reminds me of me in many ways!

Alice walked me back home so I could eat my lunch (though I didn’t) and then she and Gretchen went for a walk through the park and down past the pea patch for a photo op.

front steppea patch

shadowsserious

Don’t let that serious face fool ya. She’s a very playful gal. In fact, when she got to my house I was really hoping we were going to be able to romp around, but Gretchen kept Alice on a leash, set down my lunch (that I didn’t eat) and headed back out the door.

Maybe we’ll get to play next time!

Once Alice went home, Rosie was next and Rosie was full of energy today, according to Gretchen. They almost ran over to the park where Gretchen took photos of the big field encircled with all those changing colors. I must say, we live in a very beautiful city!

park shotpark shot2

rosieI'm coming

Rosie was so frisky that Gretchen ran backwards and Rosie ran fast to catch up to her because as Rosie knows (or perhaps that should be Rosie’s nose) there are treats in Gretchen’s pockets and Rosie is all about her treats. I wonder if she eats her lunch?

beautifulmore beauty

Gretchen dropped off a happy Rosie and then walked up the street to get Bella who was also in a frisky mood. It must be the cooler temperatures because everyone (including me) had a bounce in their steps today. Since we were going to see Bella twice today, Gretchen decided to take her for a long walk this morning and then later, in the evening, go for a romp. So they walked over the hill and down through the neighborhoods where they found a HUGE holiday treat. Bella was at first cautious, but eventually just ignored the ball of orange.

What?never mind

As you can see, it was a great lesson in down/stay with a very big distraction! Good work, Bella!

Next up was Saber, who was kind of sleepy and a little disappointed that I wasn’t waiting at the bottom of the steps for him, but he and Gretchen took a walk through the park over to our house where a very happy Saber was thrilled to see a very happy me!

Which leads us to our second celebration — Saber graduated from Basic Obedience Class. Nice work, son!

the graduate

Saber and I played super hard in celebration. The above photo is the one time Gretchen got us to rest a moment, but if you look at my eyes, you can tell I’m getting ready to pounce, and pounce I did!

pouncepounce back

In that last shot, Saber was trying to shove the blue ball in my face — he likes to do that — but during the shove, he lost the ball, which you can see just popping out of his mouth! Don’t worry. He got it back, though what he really wanted to do was chase me. Since it was his celebration, I relented and oh, what a magnificent chase we had!

Eventually we got pretty tired. At that point we just laid down and rolled all over each other. Now that, my friends, is a great way to celebrate!

Whew! I can tell you, I was pretty tired after this and Saber? Well, he walked straight into his kennel at home and laid right down. I think we gave him a pretty decent romp yesterday afternoon!

But our day was not over. I got to rest a bit before we headed out to pick up Bella again. Yes, she was thrilled to see me, so thrilled in fact, Gretchen made a beeline with us to the tennis courts where we played and played and played! Of course, the sun was hovering over the western horizon by then, making for some shadowy photographs, but you get the idea of how much fun we had!

Tonight I think I will sleep extremely well. I’ve worked hard and tomorrow is packed with more expected fun and frolic. Oh, yes, I eventually ate my lunch…around 3:30 in the afternoon…and surprised myself and Gretchen when at 7, I was hungry for dinner. Guess I’m just not a breakfast kind of guy.

Until tomorrow,

Color Obsessed

fall colors

I know, I know. Two posts in a row where I’m going to talk about colors, but let me tell you something…if you can’t appreciate the beautiful colors of fall decorating our neighborhoods of late, then you need to work on your aesthetic sensibilities.

dahliacuYou like that? Aesthetic sensibilities. Yeah, I’m kind of a learned dog if you haven’t figured that out already. But seriously. It’s beautiful outside and we should be very thankful that we live on the west side of this state because I read in the newspaper this morning (yes, I read the newspaper, too!) that on the east side of the state, the temperatures dropped below freezing. Too cold to go outside and watch the leaves fire up with the radiant autumn hues if you ask me. So I’m happy I live on the west side of Washington because not only do we get to see the day to day color show, we get to do it in the warmth of the October sun!

That was our focus today. Not only did we walk dogs in the glow of the autumn sun, but we focused on all the color around us. And trust me, there was plenty of it.

First up was Oshi and Perrito. We searched for color and it didn’t take long until we came upon the magenta tones right before the tunnel to the lake. Of course, it was hard to capture the boys AND the color all at the same time, but due note who IS looking at the camera!

And if you notice in that first photograph, Perrito decided that leaning on me was the coolest thing in the world. Gretchen did, too, so she caught a photo of the little man cuddling up to me. Even I have to admit, it is kind of cute.

Next up was Saber who we walked twice today. First in the morning…

And then again in the afternoon, where we played at the tennis courts, met a new friend, and sat in awe of the surrounding trees…oh, and notice the afternoon sun playing a different tune…or maybe that should be tone? First up, meeting Nanook, our new friend!

In between Saber in the morning and Saber in the afternoon was Gemma…

Yes, the flowers were that orange and that yellow. We had to close our eyes they were so bright, but not for long because to get us to focus for this photograph, Gretchen bribed us with mighty tasty treats. Not that I need to be bribed, but Gemma likes it!

Of course, then we saw a bird fly by and trust me, it was a test of our wills to sit so still!

Next up was Bella, who Gretchen walked alone. I got to rest at home as I’d already had a busy day, plus I needed to eat my leftover breakfast.

As you can see, those flowers were bright for Bella, too!

Trust me, Gretchen took a bazillion more photographs of the amazing colors of the day, but I insisted she not make me publish them all. I mean, I could be writing this blog for hours if I had to put in all those photographs. Don’t get me wrong, they’re very beautiful photographs, but I do have other responsibilities!

Tomorrow looks like it might be as wonderfully colorful as today. I’ll try to focus on something else and get Gretchen’s camera to focus more on the action (us!), but I can’t make any promises!

Until tomorrow!

city colors

The Color of Magic

Color is always there. I see it all the time whether it’s the bright orange of my favorite ball, the silvery, slippery shake of a squirrel tail as it races up the street, or the green open field where we go to play fetch. The lake is blue, the mountains are white, then black, and the colors of the dogs we play with, walk with, and pass by are a multitude of wonderful colors.

But when September rolls into October and October temperatures cool off every morning and evening, the colors of Seattle slowly turn into something glowing. Today, we focused on colors. Gretchen pulled out her camera to try to capture it all and what she didn’t capture in photos, I’ll try to capture in words.

I went to school with her today and there I helped the students work on their writing skills. Being such a skilled dog writer myself, I thought I’d impart my words of wisdom. They seemed to appreciate it because they petted my head, played with my ears, and let me rub against their legs.

After my lesson, we picked up an excited Ollie. all colors

“Hey, Ollie,” I asked.

“Yeah, Rubin, Ruby, Rubster, my good, bestest friend!” he bounced back.

“What’s your favorite color?”

“Color? Color? Let’s see. There are so many, how can any dog choose,” he danced and hopped, his tail moving in a blur of enthusiasm. “I know, I know, I know! I love them all. Yes I do, yes I do! The blues and the reds and the greens and the oranges and the purples and yellows, there isn’t a color I don’t like!” And with that we were off on a walk to Saber’s house.

Saber isn’t has excited as Ollie when we first arrive. He stretches and yawns and waits patiently for Gretchen to put on his leash. All three of us headed over to the tennis courts to play and then to our house for a short romp!

color manswirling

“What’s your favorite color, Saber?”

“Huh, color? Dude, let me wake up first.”

Moments later as were walking to our house he says, “I like the color of food.”

“What color is that?” I pressed.

“Good!”

He is a silly dog. It appeared that I was not going to get a straight answer from these two goofs, so I just played with them!

“Yeah, Ollie?”not swirling

“I know what color I like best.”

“What color is that, Mr. Goofy?”

“The color of fun! What color is that?”

“I think you had it right the first time, buddy. It’s all colors swirled together!”

“Swirl, swirl, swirl. How fun is that?”

See what I’m working with here? Well, Gretchen left me behind at the house so I could eat my breakfast (leftover from this morning) while she and Saber escorted Ollie back to his house. Then Saber went back home, too, though we knew he was on our schedule for later!

rosiliciousNext up was Rosie. I had Gretchen ask her what her favorite color was…

“Hey, Rosilicious, Rubin wants to know what your favorite color is?”

“Well, let me think about that.”

“Okay, but can we walk while you think?”

“No, not really. I must paws to contemplate the deeper meaning of my choice.”

“Okay then. You let me know when we can get moving.”

Long paws…that way

“It would have to be purple,” she finally answered and then they headed to Frink Park.

“Why purple?” Gretchen asked and once again they had to stop while Rosie set her brow in concentration.

“Well, at first I was going to say red because that’s the color of Tyson’s leash and since Tyson is my favorite dog in the world and I love him more than anything, I thought red would be a good representation of how I felt.”

“So why did you change it to purple?”

“Because when Tyson gets his leash on, I want mine on too. I want to go with him and when the purple leash is pulled off the hook, then I know I get to go and that makes me feel absolutely delighted.”

this way“That’s really sweet, Rose. Now, can we continue walking?”

“Sure thing! Let’s go up this way, okay?”

“Anything to make you happy, Rosie!”

“Well, that’s a different question, isn’t it?”

“You mean what makes you happy?” Gretchen asked.

“Yes.” With that Rosie stopped again to think it over.

“Oh, sweetie,” Gretchen said, “I wasn’t asking you what makes you happy. I was simply saying we could go whichever direction felt best to you.”

“Oh, sorry.”

“No apologies necessary. Just keep walking.”

“Okay.” And they were off again, up over the hill and back to Rosie’s house and along they way they took photographs of the changing leaves. Aren’t they beautiful?

Next up was Gemma. Because Gemma is still on the mend, though she is without her cast, Gretchen thought it best to walk her alone. Therefore, she had to ask her the inevitable question of the day.

“Hey, Gemma. Rubin wants to know your favorite color.”gemma's ears

“He does? Why isn’t he asking?”

“He’s at home resting.”

“Resting? What a silly concept.”

“So? What’s your favorite color?”

“Hey,” Gemma smirked, “If Rubin wants to know he shouldn’t be such a lazy fella. He should be here so I can bumped into him while we walk. Then he could ask me himself.”

“Wow, that’s kind of cold.”

“Nope. I just miss him,” Gemma reported.

“I know. He misses you too. Maybe, though, if you told him your favorite color for his survey, he’d walk with you tomorrow as an early birthday present!”

“Well, okay,” Gemma gave in. “It’s red.”

“Why red?”

“Wait. I have to have a reason why I like this color? Is that part of his survey, too?”

Gretchen smiled. “No, I was just interested.”

“Well then,” Gemma relented, “I like red because I’m Irish.”

Gretchen thought about that for a moment and then said, “I thought the Irish color was green?”

“Is it?”

“I think so.”

“But why do all the Irish have red hair? I mean, look at me. I’m Irish and I’m covered in red!”

“Well,” Gretchen tried to explain, “I think the Irish think they are lucky and that luck is green.”

“Oh my,” Gemma pondered. “I’m certainly not lucky. First my ear gets bit, now my toe is broken. I mean, I’ve worn that Collar of Shame more times than I can remember. Would you call that lucky?”

“I guess not.”

“Then I’m sticking with red. Maybe that will be more lucky for me.”

“Good choice.”

After their walk, Gretchen picked up Bella for a short walk and then she got to come visit me for a bit,pea patch dog after which we went for another walk down through the neighborhood pea patch.

“Hey Bella, what’s your favorite color?” I asked.

“That one!” she said, lunging to a blue flower. “Or maybe that one,” she said while hopping on a yellow daisy. “Or that one or that one or that one. Look at ‘em all, would ya? How am I supposed to know these things? I’m just a pup!”

“Settle down, Bella,” I said. “It’s not a test. I was just wondering if you had a preference?”

Pea Patch dogs“Preff-rents? What’s that?”

“Something you prefer. Something you like more than other things,” I tried to explain.

“I like you,” she said slinging her long leg over my back. “And I like Gretchen,” she added pushing her nose into Gretchen’s hand where the treats are sometimes dispensed.

“Okay, okay. I can see this is going to be hard for you to decide. Get back to me about it, okay?”

“Yep, my people will call your people who’ll call other people…” she prattled on for awhile.

“Hey, where’d that come from?” I asked.

“My mom’s a lawyer. She talks like that all the time! I like her, too, by the way.”

A walk with Bella is a constant conversation. Not much is connected, but let’s just say, walking next to Bella can be entertaining. She’s getting better, much better, but I’m certainly tired after we drop her off.

sleepy friendsBut my work is not over. Nope, we head to Saber’s house after Bella and it’s like going from night to day. Saber is a sleepy evening, while Bella is a bright, bright morning, that’s for sure!

We headed over to the tennis courts for some romping time before we headed to school to meet up with our young friend, the student.

“Saber?”

“Rubin?”

“What’s your favorite color?”

I expected a quick answer from my young friend, but Saber always surprises me. He took his time on this one and then said, after many tosses of the ball, “I think I’m too young to choose. I mean, I have yet to experience the whole world.”

“That makes sense,” I agreed, “But is there one color you like now, at this young age?”

“It would be red because that’s the color of my Kong where exciting things are kept for me to chew on while I’m waiting for you to come play with me.”

“That’s Gemma’s favorite color, too,” I told him and then we talked about when we might get to play with Gemma because Saber loves her and would love to romp around with her again some day.

Later he stopped me and added, “I think I like red because I really like Gemma. Is that okay to confess?”

“Certainly!” I reassured him.

And then we played. And then Desi showed up and we played with him, though Desi doesn’t play much.

But Desi does like to give high fives especially when Gretchen’s handing out treats. Of course, it’s hard to take a photo while giving a high five in return, but you can get the idea from this blurry photo that Desi can sky high!

As for me, I am fond of many colors as well, but the colors of autumn are some of my favorites especially when they are first pushing away the greens. It’s like magic and I guess that’s what color I like the best. The color of magic!

Until Tomorrow,

slobber mouth

Drool

I’ve read that poodles don’t slobber. I must not have inherited that part from my poodle father. I got my mom’s half Labradoodle part. I can drool. Not badly, but put a ball in my mouth for any length of time and it will be soggy when you go to put it away.

But my slobber mouth isn’t nearly as bad as some dogs.

wetmouthsTake Tyson and Rosie, who Gretchen walked today. There are spots all over Gretchen’s shorts (or pants) and backpack where Rosie or Tyson left a wet message for me to smell later. While I LOVE smelling the message, at times it can get a bit slobbery when Gretchen’s feeding them treats. She doesn’t seem to mind, but I know she’s glad that I’m not that drooly.

wall poseOshi and Perrito — I’m not sure, but I think they don’t drool. They rarely hold balls in their mouths and they aren’t that interested in Gretchen’s treats so there’s never much cause to see how wet their lips are. I also think that most of the moisture in their lives goes out in their pee, which, as you know, they do all the time on our walks! Well, except when playing or getting their photo taken on a nice sunny day.

nodroolGemma doesn’t drool at all. I think it’s because she’s so busy all the time — watching for birds, hopping around to see if another dog is close by, backing her butt end into me while we walk — that any slobber she might produce dries up in the breezy whirlwind she creates. We walked Gemma today who, as you’ll see, is cast free. Her toe is still broken, she still can’t romp around, but everyone decided that the cast wasn’t helping so off it went. Gemma is very, very happy about that! Me, too, because now I get to see Ms. Dry Mouth more often!

see, dry!

Bella doesn’t drool either, but she’s young still. Give her time. She just may produce some slobber if given a little more maturity and time. Of course, the same principle that applies to Gemma could apply to Bella. When given half a chance to run, she takes it and any wet mouth that may occur is sucked up in her speedy flight!

flowerearsit's not wet!

Of course, Bella really enjoys playing fetch and chewing on the ball, so maybe one day, she’ll hand back a wet ball when she’s done.

You never know. I mean, I wasn’t always a wet mouth!

Saber is going to be a slobbery boy. I can tell you this already. When we play, as we did today, my ears big toyare wet, my neck is wet, and there are drool marks all over my body. But I don’t mind. We have so much fun I hardly notice. Gretchen notices because when she gives him treats, just like with Rosie and Tyson, her hand is very wet.

The biggest drooler of all is Quillette. When Gretchen’s fixing her dinner, she becomes a waterfall. But we didn’t walk Quillette today so I’ll hold off on any further descriptions until we do!

Hey wait…speaking of dinner…when’s that happening? “Gretchen?”

Oh, until tomorrow,

Small, Magic Moments

red flashThere are moments in my day when magic happens. Not dazzling magic, just small moments when I stop and look at the world in awe.

Today was such a day — a day filled with little, magical awes.

The day started when Gretchen returned from teaching a bit earlier than expected. She changed into her dog walking clothes just as the rain started to really come down. We headed up the street to fetch Monty who woofed with excitement when he heard us coming, but sagged a bit when he saw the rain. “I know, buddy,” I said to him, “But look south. Do you see it?”

Monty looked at the southern sky and his eyes widened with a smile. “A sucker hole!”

A sucker hole is a patch of blue in an completely gray sky. It suckers you into believing that the rain just might stop and the sun might make an appearance. While that wasn’t the case as we headed over to Saber’s house, the magic was the possibility of sunshine. We watched that sucker hole for the entire walk with Saber and when Gretchen lead us to one of my favorite trails, I was overwhelmed by the magic of a rainy moment in the woods.

You must understand a few things about this trail. Not many people walk on it. It’s a nice path surrounded by woods and now that it’s fall, the changing leaves make it feel golden once you’re on the path. It’s also one of the paths on which Monty and I like to chase each other and get a little crazy. Saber had his magical moment watching us!

golden chasetag

It’s kind of blurry because we’re really moving. In fact, Saber can’t keep up and so watches from the path as I race through the trees!

zoomboxing

Then Gretchen asked us to stop. It took some effort, but eventually we behaved.

dirty dogsdirty nose

As you can see, we got a little wet and dirty and in my race through the woods, I got scratched right below my left eye. I’m okay, but I guess I better slow down on my favorite trail!

Saber went home happy and wet. He curled up in his crate, while we headed home to dry off and rest as well.  It was a magical feeling — that playful exhaustion — and so Monty and I were content while Gretchen headed next door to pick up the boys — Oshi and Perrito.

Perrito is recovering nicely from his de-manning surgery, though both dogs were upset they had to go for a walk in the rain. And boy, was it raining when they went out! So much so that Gretchen could only get a few photos before she had to tuck her camera back into it’s dry spot!

Watch was the magic moment for the boys? Well, after Gretchen dried them off, they raced inside their house and then had a wild game of chase. It makes Gretchen laugh every time.

Bella was next and since Bella had a chance to play with me a couple times this week, Gretchen decided to take Bella for a walk by herself after they had a play session at the tennis courts. Bella sure loves my red tug toy so they played fetch and tug just as the sun came out. There’s a magic moment!

kill itchomp

tuggingPlaying tug is Bella’s reward for practicing her commands. For instance, Gretchen will ask her to sit or lie down, to wait or to heal and when Bella does it, she gets tug time.

What’s particularly magical about these moments is how Bella will do anything…and I mean ANYTHING to get the tug toy in her mouth.

She sits on the first command, she lies down with an enthusiastic flop, and she finds Gretchen’s left side without any reminders. I mean, just look at those focused, magical eyes!

focusedwhat next?

Once Bella got some of her ya-yas out (as Gretchen likes to call them) they went for a long walk up through the neighborhoods of Mt. Baker and down past the tennis courts where there’s a great view of the city. You can see how those rain clouds are scurrying away making way for some sun and blue skies!

city view

Yep, it was magical or so Gretchen says. Monty and I were resting nicely during all of this, but when she got home, we were ready for more fun and games. She leashed us up, we walked back to Saber’s house, and then we headed to the tennis courts (which were now dry) for some fetch.

Sabergo get it!

Do you see all those shadows? Yep, that sucker hole from the morning won out and we had a wonderfully, magical sunny afternoon in which to play!

Monty ran a little, but mostly he hung out on his bench. I’m not sure why he likes that bench, but he sure does. Saber was a bit confused, too!

I guess that bench is Monty’s magical moment…

That’s when we had a special visit by a magical moment. His name is Lazaro…which is spelled differently, but we like this spelling best of all!

Monty in particular thought Laz was very special.

As you can see, Laz is a greyhound. He’s 12 years old and in really good shape. A little shy, it was still very special (yes, and magical) to spend time with him!

Lazaro

We sure hope all of you have some of your own magical moments this weekend.

Until then!
