Just Like That me

Gretchen tells me that people who live in the Midwest talk a lot about the weather and that people in California don’t talk about it as much.

“Why?” I asked.

“I’m not sure, but probably because the weather changes a lot in Iowa and Wisconsin, but not very much in California,” she answered.

“What about where we live?” I asked. “Do we talk about the weather a lot?”

“It depends,” she said. “When it’s not normal, I think we talk about it a lot.”

“What do you mean, not normal?

“Well, think about this summer. It’s been really, really hot, right?

“Yep, really hot!” I panted just for emphasis.

“And now, it’s the middle of September and we’ve had temperatures in the 70s and 80s. That’s not normal and what is everyone talking about?”

“The weather!”

no rainI am a smart boy, aren’t I?

Well, the weather changed today, just like that. Yesterday was hot with blue skies and not a breeze to be found. Today, it all changed. We were met with a cold wind this morning followed by clouds painting the sky gray, and then in the afternoon, the first few drops of rain.

But just a few. We got our work done before it really rained, which is the promise for tonight.

Tomorrow? It’s supposed to be warm again. Not very normal.

We started our work with Monty and when I say “we” I mean Quillette and me. Monty was happy to see us and we, in turn, were just as happy to see him. We went for a walk and Gretchen tried to get us to pose on the steps so she could record the changing colors.

three of us

Only it was a tough shot to get. I was a good boy and Quillette didn’t pretty well, too, but once Gretchen crouches down to take the photo, Monty sees it as an invitation to visit her. Yep, that’s the end of his leash moving in her direction while Quillette and I maintain our stay!

DSC00399

She repositioned us, but once she squatted down, Monty was on the move again.

on the move

I think we’ll need to enlist some help to get Monty to sit still while we take the photo. By then, maybe the fall colors will be in their prime. Hard to know when that will be with this interesting weather we’re having.

Because the rain was threatening, Gretchen picked up Gemma next after she dropped us at home. This may seem like a weird move, but really it was necessary since Gemma is still wearing a cast on her broken toe.

cast girl

Of course, a broken toe hasn’t slowed her down in the least. Gretchen walked her by herself so Gemma wouldn’t overdo it, but according to Gretchen, contrary to the calm photos below, Gemma was ready for action! Just look at those alert ears!

ready?can I go now?

Let's go!

Gemma got a short walk today, but we’re hoping she mends quickly so we can play together again!

Rosie was next and from everything Gretchen tells me, Rosie likes the cooler weather as much as I do. Apparently, when it’s hot like it’s been (all summer!), Rosie tires out very quickly. But today, Rosie was firing on full cylinders and the two of them went on a nice long walk up on the hill and around the neighborhoods! Gretchen stopped at another vista point, but once again Rosie wasn’t really interested at looking at the camera. Apparently, she was more interested in smelling any and everything she could get her nose on!

vistasniffing

Gretchen kept trying though, but only when she pulled out treats would Rosie look (almost) directly into the camera. I think she must be really shy or maybe she just likes her profile more than her portrait!

smelling flowersmore profile

almost lookingThis photo, apparently, is when Rosie saw a rat. Gretchen saw it too and tried to take a photo of it, but it scurried away before she could capture the evidence.

I love how alert Rosie is in this photo.  And so patient. If I’d seen what she’d seen, I’d have been at the end of my leash trying to catch it. But not Rosie. She just stared with her neck thick with anticipation and her ears listening intently. Gretchen reports that she never once tried to get the rat, she just looked. Good dog, Rosie!

Bella was next and after her wild time with Bella yesterday, Gretchen came armed with toys, her clicker, and a handful of Bella’s favorite treats. Only Bella wasn’t crazy Bella today. Nope, she was focused and right on target with all of her training. She’s getting older, I guess. They went for a walk, really focused on heeling and paying attention and as a reward, Bella got to see me…but only for like 5 minutes!

bella timebackside

Believe it or not, we really only played for 5 minutes. I’m not lying. And yes, we got a lot in during those 5 minutes. Can you tell?

oh my

But I hadn’t eaten my breakfast so Gretchen made me come inside for lunch. Monty had to eat, too and since Quillette is with us, she got a snack, too! While we ate, Bella and Gretchen played tug and fetch. Bella really liked that…almost more than playing with me!  I can’t imagine!

my squeakysettling down

The funny thing about Bella is that she’s usually always moving. She was calmer today than yesterday, but Gretchen got a lot of funny partial photos of nothing but Bella’s tail or an ear or, my personal favorite, her deer legs!

deer legs

I got to walk Bella home and Monty joined us, too. Then Monty and I headed to Saber’s house and once he woke up from his nap, he was really happy to see us! We went for a long walk, down through the tunnel and up over the hill. Here again, Gretchen tried to get a photo of the three of us, but Monty kept misbehaving! I wasn’t so great either!

Saber showed us all up!

When we got the top of the hill, Gretchen stopped at Dog Mania to make a grooming appointment for me and Oshi and Perrito. Yikes! I wonder when that’s going to happen?

Meanwhile, Saber was like a bull in a china shop (I learned that phrase from Gretchen) thrilled to be around so many yummy smelling toys and treats. I was pointing out the door, Monty was trying to get the owners to pet him, and Saber had his head buried in a box of bones. He’s so silly! Too bad Gretchen had packed away her camera!

We dropped Saber back at his house, headed back to our own, and then Quillette got to go out with the boys next door — Oshi and Perrito (little do they know that they’ll be sharing a spa date with me soon!) Then went on a long walk and then Gretchen tried to play fetch with everyone, but Q wasn’t into it and Perrito was too interested in running around. Oshi? Oh yeah, he did the Oshi thing, which is nothing except pointing in the direction of home!

runninghome now?

posingstill running

Quillette, as you can see, didn’t want to play fetch nor did she want to go home. Rather, she just sat in the grass and looked pretty. I think she misses her mom.  Don’t worry, Q girl, she’ll be home soon! What a homecoming that will be!

Though the weather changed today, the forecast still looks sunny for quite awhile. If we lived in California, nobody would pay any attention, but we live in Seattle and let me tell you, we’re all paying attention because just like that, it could all change!

My favorite photo of the day is this one — Q being content to just sit in the sprinkles of rain. I agree with you, girlfriend. The rain is nice, very, very nice!

Picture Day!Alice

At the school where Gretchen teaches in the mornings, the kids were all dressed up for picture day. I didn’t know much about picture day so Gretchen had to explain that all the students get their portraits taken so families can have a record of each school year. That sounded like such a good idea, I told her we should have a picture day so that’s what we did…we set out to get a portrait of each of the dogs we walked today, including Alice, our new client.

Alice is a beautiful girl. I got to meet her yesterday, but Gretchen walked her alone today so Alice could learn to trust her. Next time we walk Alice, I get to go and she can learn to trust me, too!

But Alice wasn’t our first client nor our first portrait. That would be Ollie… and Quillete, of course, who joined us on a walk to the tennis courts for a romp in the autumn sun. Here’s Ollie’s school portrait…the School of Rubin, that is.

ollie portrait

Quillette wanted her portrait to be with a ball in her mouth. I’m not sure why because, well, she might play with the ball, but she doesn’t fetch and bring it back like I do. She just walks around with the ball in her mouth woof woof woofing!

Q portrait

I let her know that the photo below was a much better portrait, but she disagreed. Whadda ya gonna do?

smiling Q

Gretchen couldn’t just take one photo of us, though, not with a new camera in her hands, so here are some of the other photos from our Ollie outing…

As you can tell, Gretchen tried to get a photo of the three of us, but it’s hard to get us all looking in the same direction. Finally though, holding the camera all wonky-jawed, she took this one!

wonky jawed

Next up, was Alice, the new gal in town. She was really easy to get a portrait of her and they all turned out very nice. Did I tell you she was a pretty girl? Well, she is!

mountainno mountain

As you can see, Mountain Rainier was out today, though Gretchen had a hard time getting it in every photo because of the backlighting.

the mountain

That light thing is something Gretchen’s still trying to figure out with her new camera as you can tell from this final (cute) Alice portrait.

Alice in the light

Next, Gretchen walked Rosie who was not so thrilled to have her portrait taken. She’s kinda she that way.  Gretchen took her up to one of her favorite photo spots, up the stairs and overlooking the city. This time of year is particularly wonderful as the trees are just starting to turn into their autumn colors! Of course, Rosie wouldn’t turn and face the camera so Gretchen had a hard time capturing those amazing colors!

It is a pretty view from up top of those stairs, so Gretchen gave up and just took a picture of the view without Rosie in it.

the view

They continued up the hill with Rosie panting and Gretchen sweating because despite it being mid-September, it was really warm today!  Rosie led the way once she realized they were heading back to her house, but then Gretchen stopped to take a shadow self portrait of the two of them.

heading homeself portrait

Rosie went straight for the water bowl when she got home and Gretchen headed up the street to pick up Bella. Bella must of had fleas for breakfast because she was like a flea on a hot skillet today. Crazy wild, that’s what Gretchen called it so after their training walk (which didn’t go very well), she brought Bella to our house so I could help her burn some energy. Whew! What a workout for me!

Then we went for a walk and Bella went wild again.I joined in.

wild girlcrazy girl2

Eventually (and by that I mean a long eventually) Bella slowed down enough to get her portrait taken. I waited on top of the picnic table so Bella could focus on posing for her portrait!

Bella's portrait

I like this photo of Bella the best. She’s happy, relatively calm, and the light is hitting her just right.

After we took the wild child home, we picked up Saber. He was anything but wild. He was sleepy, but woke right up when he saw me and we made our way over to the tennis courts for a short romp.

rompingmy ball

Of course, it was hot out there (as I’ve mentioned) so soon we were resting in the shade.

Because it was so hot, we brought Saber home to our house so he could play in our pool only he wasn’t the least bit interested in it. Imagine that!

That’s the closest he got to the pool. Instead, he just played with my toys. One in particular…my favorite squeaky Kong!

Yeah well, the best thing to do with a young whipper-snapper like Saber is just reach in and take back my toy. Of course, he just followed me around and stared at my toy!

Oh, and when I asked Saber which photo he wanted for his class portrait he said this one, or as he put it, “The tough guy shot!”

And yes, that’s my ball that he stole from me at the tennis courts. He is a tough guy, isn’t he?

How do you know when

a new camera

you’re going a good

job?

We’re working hard these days. Really hard. At 7:15 this morning, Gretchen got me into the car and we drove up to the mountains where we went for a nice little hike before we met up with her students at a ropes course. 7:15 is an early start to work and it got me to thinking — What do I use to measure the quality of my work? Punctuality? The number of clients in a day? The early start or late ending of any given work day? How many cookies I get before, during, and after I work? How do I know I’m doing good work?

hikingWhen the camera broke last week (though it wasn’t really broken, it just needed a new battery), there wasn’t even a photographic log of the work we did on any give day. In fact, on Friday, I didn’t post on this blog because I was at a loss of how to measure the quality of the day without pictures to look back on.

Gretchen, of course, bought a new camera, and she’s been a pest about it ever since, snapping photos all the time just to see the quality of different settings. I suppose that’s one way to know what kind of job you’re doing — overdo something and see how it looks/feels, but frankly, I’m too busy to overdo my work so I must find other measuring sticks.

So today, I paid close attention to our work, one walk at a time. After we got back from the mountains, Gretchen dropped me off at the house for a rest. Hmmmm, that makes me wonder. Is resting really working? I’ll have to think about that. Regardless, Gretchen worked and first up were Rosie and Tyson.

roty

They were very happy to see her, she reports leaping up and dancing around the moment she stepped into the house. And then, on the walk, they were very patient with her as she practiced with her new camera to take some much needed photographs of the sibling boxers. When I looked at the photos this afternoon, I realized that there is a wonderful measuring stick right there in those dogs’ eyes. They’re happy, aren’t they? I think that is one way I know we’re doing a good job! It’s in the eyes…and tongue!

tysonRosie

rosie's tonguetyson's eyes

As you can see (or so we hope) this camera takes some pretty detailed photographs. Gretchen’s still learning all the features, but luckily she had lots of opportunities to practice and play! Oh, and some very patient dogs!

patient

After their walk, Gretchen dropped off Rosie and Tyson at their house and then walked back home to get Quillette. Since Q-girl is living with us for a few more weeks, she’s shared in the weight and responsibility of our business. Quillette is finicky about who she wants to walk, but luckily, she loves walking with Oshi and Perrito. They headed through the neighborhood to the park where they all posed for Gretchen’s new camera.

PerritoOshi

I know we’re doing a good job when we go to pick up Oshi and Perrito. They jump all over us and wait patiently while we attach their leashes. Then they race out the door and pee on the first thing they find. Peeing happily is a perfect measure of the work I do and these boys can produce some serious volumes of pee!

soulful

Quillette likes to pee, too, but I know she’s thanking me for the work I do and appreciates the quality of my efforts because she sings. Yes, sings. Whenever we see her, she throws back her head in a soulful song, gives me a kiss on my muzzle, and continues singing our praises. Speaking of soulful — look at those eyes!

Gretchen and Quillette returned after they dropped off the boys and then it was my turn to get back at it. Quillette got to rest and I got to go with Gretchen to pick up Bella. This, my friends, is where I really earn my keep. Bella LOVES me and is thrilled to the floppy ears when we come to get her.  She did really well today greeting me more nicely, which means I only had to scold her twice before she stopped jumping on me. While some dogs’ gratitude (like Rosie and Tyson’s) is more subtle, Bella’s is effusive. She can hardly contain her enthusiasm and thanks for the entire hour we are with her. And when we end up, after a long walk, at our house for a romp, she exudes appreciation.

romping thankspounce

pounce backover the back

Gretchen’s still learning about how to take good photographs when we’re on the move so Bella offered lots of practice as she’s ALWAYS on the move!

moving

Well, until I pin her down and we cuddle up and snarfle together. That’s when I know she really likes the job I do!

snarfling

So here I am, all day long thinking, how do I know when I’m doing a good job and what should happen next? We drop Bella off at home, walk down the block to pick up Saber, and there on the kitchen island is a card from Saber’s parents. What kind of card? It’s a thank you card! Wow, how cool! How very, very cool. It’s like all day long I’m fixated on “Am I doing a good job?” and at the end of the day, I get a card telling me (oh and Gretchen, too) how much they appreciate us. Wow. Super Wow! I felt pretty special (still does) so when we walked over to the tennis courts to play with Saber, I was on my best behavior teaching Saber how to chase, leap, fetch and chew on sticks!

Saber’s a quick learner. He watches everything I do and then imitates me. He also likes to stalk me, but I was in such a happy mood, I didn’t care!

Saber was pretty happy too!

happy eyeshappy squint

So, when I really looked for it, when I really thought about it, there are so many ways in a day that I could us as a measure of the job I’m doing. And in the end, I think I measure up pretty well!

Good thing Gretchen has a new camera to keep track of it all!

Until tomorrow,

Rubin

September 10, 2009

Hey Gretchen, why are you looking so sad?

Oh Rubin, I think my camera broke.

Oh that can’t be good. What’s wrong?

Well, it won’t turn on except sporadically.

What do you think causes that?

I think either the switch that turns it off and on is broken or the battery is kaput!

What’s kaput?

Dead. No longer holding a charge. In essence, not working.

Is that why you don’t have any pictures for my blog post tonight.

Yeah, buddy, I’m really sorry. I know you like commenting on the photos, but unfortunately I don’t have any and I’m not sure how soon I can get the camera up and running.

That IS a bummer. I mean, no one really wants to read my blog. Families just want to see their dogs playing and having a good time while they’re with us.

I do have an alternate camera, but it’s not the best. I’ll pull it out tomorrow if I can’t get this one working.

Weren’t you going to buy a new camera?

Yes, but the one I want is pretty pricey and though I’ve been saving to purchase it, I don’t have enough money yet.

Can’t you use that credit card thingy you’re always using for dog treats and stuff?

I suppose I could, but that’s not always wise.

Why not? It works for the food doesn’t it?

Yes, but even though you eat pretty well, the price of your food isn’t as much as the price of a new camera.

Would it help if I went without food and treats for awhile so you could save up the money faster?

Oh, that’s really sweet of you big guy, but  I’m sure I’ll work something out so you don’t have to sacrifice.

So what should I do about the blog?

I think you should just charm our clients with your quick wit and creative skills at writing.

Wow, thanks for the praise! Does a treat follow that praise?

Aren’t you a funny guy.

It was worth a try. Okay,  I’ll review the day. You chime in when you think of something important, okay?

Okay, but do I get a treat for it?

Ha, you’re the funny one. Okay, first up…wait, it was kind of a weird day, wasn’t it?

How so?

There were a lot of quirks in the schedule.

Oh, like Gemma?

Yeah, poor Gemma who broke her toe and now must not only wear a cast on her leg, but also the put on that Cone of Shame again.

Walking her wasn’t in the plans today. Well, walking her very far wasn’t the plan.

You weren’t there before you pick me up. How was she?

She was very happy to see me, but not very happy about her situation. I have to carry her down the stairs, which I did on my first visit. I just spent some time with her in the backyard. She did her business, but she was really upset about her condition.

I can imagine! She sure gets in a lot of…well, I’m not sure what I’d call it.

Predicaments?

Sure, that works. But you saw her twice today?

Yeah, first visit I was alone and the second was with you.

She was happy to see me.

But we had to go slow, didn’t we?

That was probably the slowest walk around the block I’ve ever been on.

That’s because we needed to take care of her toe.

How long  does she have to be like that?

Four to six weeks!

Ouch!

You can say that again.

Ouch! I can’t remember, who came after Gemma?

Another girl in a predicament.

Oh right, Bella, the towel eater!

Yep! I checked on her once, but she only peed when we went for our short walk.

But later, when I played with her and we went for a walk, she had two very nice number twos.

Well said. But no towel or string or anything resembling something she shouldn’t have eaten.

So where did the towel go?

I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

Good thing you’re the one in charge of picking up poo!

Very funny.

You came to get us after your first visits with Bella and Gemma, right?

Yep.

And then we walked up to get Ollie who is back in town. He’s such an easy going fella.

Yeah, you and Quillette get along really well with Mr. Ollie By Gollie.

He had fun, too. He likes Quillette and really respects her.

Every dog does!

What came after that? Oh yeah, you took Ollie home and then went to visit Rosie. When will I get to meet her?

Well, that could be awhile. She’s a nervous girl.

I’m nervous sometimes. Maybe I could help her overcome her fears?

That’s an idea, but we have to wait until she trusts me completely and then we’ll ask her parents if it would be okay.

Thanks. From the few photos you have of her, I think I’d really like her.

You would. She’s very sweet. Today, in fact, we went for a nice walk and then I stopped to pet her and practice some commands. She got all happy and started kissing me all over my face.

Really?

Yes, really and let me tell you, she can lather you up when she kisses.

Now I definitely want to meet her.

Be patient, Rubin, be patient.

Hey, I’m a very patient guy. Look at how patient I am with Bella!

You were extremely patient today.

She had a lot of energy even though you’d walked and worked with her before you arrived at the house.

Yep, but still she wanted to race and wrestle with you.

And I did my job well, didn’t I?

Very well. And when we walked through the park back to her house, you were a great role model for how to behave on the leash.

Still, no towel string in her poop.

Well, we can’t control things like that. That requires a little intestinal magic on Bella’s part.

Intestinal magic? I learn so much from you!

I try!

And then we got to play with Saber. He’s growing so fast.

Super fast and he’s really learning a lot.

Yeah, like how to tackle me.

Well, he’s not in complete command of his body yet. Give him another year!

Another year? Wow, was I that whack-a-doodle when I was his age?

Oh yeah, little buddy. Probably even more whack-a-doodle than he is.

My favorite part of the day though was when we were walking Saber back home after a long walk and a long romp and we ran into your class of students!

Yep, they were on a field trip to the lake and when they raced across the field to say hello, I thought for sure you were going to freak.

It was frightening at first, but when they got near and I figured out who they were, I was very happy to see them.

That was great because it really showed Saber how to handle a gaggle of 10-year olds racing at him!

He loved it. He threw himself into the middle of that gaggle and ate up all their cuddling and kissing.

You looked pretty happy, too!

I was nervous at first, but once I realized who they were, well, I had to just submit to the love.

And then tonight, you, Quillette, Ann and I got to see Saber again when we went out with Monty!

That was super fun, too. Saber’s such a playful pup. It was fun introducing him to all my buddies.

I sure hope we tired him out!

I bet we did. I bet he’s curled up sound asleep on his bed right about now.

That sounds good, doesn’t it?

Yep, really good. But wait…

What?

Does that mean you aren’t so sad about the camera?

Oh buddy, we’ll figure out something. If anything, we’ll get a new camera this weekend and use the old spare one that takes crappy photos tomorrow. Besides, chatting with you tonight lifted my spirits.

My spirits weren’t down at all, but I enjoyed the chat as well.  Life offers us bumps in the road, doesn’t it?

Yep, but you just have to keep moving forward.

That’s what the good dog trainers always say.

And what good dogs know to be the truth.

Goodnight!

Goodnight, buddy. Sleep well!

The Pack Is Back!

the pack

In some ways, it’s been a long summer. With vacations and travel, it seems like forever since Monty, Quillette, and I have all been together, but today we got to hang out and that was really special.

Quillette is staying with us until her mom returns from some place called India. Sounds interesting, but Gretchen tells me I don’t want to visit because dogs aren’t treated as well there as I am here. Quillette, Ann, and I walked Gretchen to school this morning and then hung out watching the Animal Planet until she got home.

When she arrived, she had Monty in tow. Q was really, really happy to see him and he was equally excited to see her. All three of us went for a walk together and it felt like old times. I was happy to have my pack of friends back home!

After we returned, Gretchen took Quillette and got the boys next door — Oshi and Perrito. They headed over to the playfield park and Quillette pretended to play fetch.

go get itbring it back

As you can see, Perrito is very interested in Quillette. He likes older girls, I guess, because he followed her around the whole time and watched everything she did!

watchingwatching2

But don’t be deceived by Quillette’s elusiveness. She was well aware of Perrito and even commented on his shapely bum! Oshi was a little shocked by the comment!

nice bumdid you hear that?

Or maybe he was just rushing over to have Quillette take a look at his bum.

mine's nice too

No matter. The three of them were pretty cute today and if we hadn’t had so much work, I’m certain Gretchen would have taken me along.

fun timeshappy dog

But I needed my rest and I needed to eat my breakfast albeit late.  Monty gets lunch so I saved my breakfast and ate it as brunch so he wouldn’t be alone while he dined. Not that being alone would stop Monty from dining.

While we rested and ate, Gretchen walked Rosie. Rosie was feeling frisky so Gretchen headed over to the freeway park and there they played a little running game and Gretchen tried to get more photos of Rosie’s sweet face.

running dogcan we go now?

Because Rosie was kind of frisky, she got a little bored and impatient. She almost fell asleep in the photo shoot and then finally, she just got up and moved in close. Check out those jowls!

sleepingjowls

Close ups of Rosie truly show what a sweetheart she is. Of course, she was close because she knew Gretchen had treats though she was very happy to get cuddled, give kisses and then get a treat.

close upkisses now?

After Rosie went home, Bella was next. Gretchen gave her a nice walk before they headed back home so I could play a little with Bella. Ironically, she wasn’t interested in playing right away. She was more interested in the neighbors out on their deck having lunch. I was, too! Can you see me in the bushes?

who's that?the neighbors

It didn’t take her long, though, to get down to business and we had a fine romp around the yard and on it as well!

Bella and I play really well together. I’ve decided she needs my tutelage on how to be a good player so I’ve taken on the role of mentor. She’s responding really well, don’t you think?

good response

We walked Bella home the long way and she did a great job heeling on the leash. Next up, was a surprise. Ollie’s family has been out of town and while they were away, Ollie went to his Grandma’s house. But they returned early and asked if we could squeeze in a play date. For Ollie anything! So we walked up to his house, he leapt and howled and leapt some more and we set out on our walk to pick up Saber.

Saber and Ollie have met once before, but that was with Gemma. Today, it was just the three of us on some empty tennis courts. Let the games begin!

I know it looks like they started off slow, but trust me, once I played referee, they got into it!

Eventually though, the playing ended with a summons from Gretchen to get our treats. We were all over that!

Saber and I walked Ollie home and then we walked back down to Saber’s house. He was pretty tuckered and was more than ready to tuck himself into his kennel for a nap. By the time we got home, I was ready for the same, but Gretchen took the pack out one more time. I could muster up the energy for that since Monty and Quillette are my best friends. Not that I don’t like all the others, but well, they have a special place in my heart, ya know?

Until tomorrow,

that kind of dayA Nice Direction to Go!

We encounter a lot of people on our walks, humans who comment on our appearance, the number of dogs in our pack, or the quality of the weather. Today we had a man ask, “Where are you headed?” and for a moment, Gretchen and I were stumped.

“Just on a walk,” Gretchen said finally, to which the man responded, “A nice direction to go!”

I never thought of it that way, but I suppose most people don’t get to do what we get to do day in and day out — just head out on a walk.

Okay, so it’s not that easy.  Every dog requires retrieval where Gretchen or the both of us must travel to their house (usually by foot), leash up the client, and head out on the walk. Then we must return said dog and march off to the next destination.  Today there were only three dogs and luckily for us, though mostly for Gretchen, they were all within a three-block radius of each other.

First up? Rosie. Gretchen walks Rosie all by herself except occasionally on Fridays and soon to be Mondays when they walk with Rosie’s brother, Tyson.  Rosie is kind of dog shy, meaning that she gets kind of nervous around strange dogs though Gretchen hasn’t really seen that part yet, so for now it’s just the two of them taking the walk.

Today, Rosie got the obligatory photograph at the tractor at Bradner Gardens.

rosie tractorstill Rosie

Gretchen took some other photos, but they turned out kind of fuzzy. Tomorrow they’ll find another place for a Rosie photo shoot so we can add some variety to her portfolio.

On the way down the hill from Bradner Gardens, Rosie smelled something very delicious. She almost pulled Gretchen into a bush trying to get a whiff, but Gretchen got Rosie moving back down the hill.

Ironically, though, she walked Bella up there right after Rosie and Bella did the exact same thing at the exact same spot. When Gretchen checked it out, she didn’t see (or smell) anything, but clearly it was one of those interesting spots only dogs can appreciate.ear flop

Gretchen and Bella headed down from the interesting smell to the big field by the museum and there Gretchen attached a couple of leashes to Bella’s leash and they ran up and down the field so Bella could really stretch her legs.

Then Gretchen pulled out the ball and Bella had a fun time chewing it, throwing it in the air, kicking it with her feet, and rolling around with it.

She got pretty silly with the whole thing, didn’t she?

orange ballyeehaw!

Eventually Bella settled down and Gretchen worked on a new command, one that she hopes will help Bella focus more.

settling down

It’s a command Gretchen teaches all the dogs we walk and it’s called the “look” command. I won’t go into details, but it basically means that when Gretchen says “look” we need to look at her for as long as she wants. She starts out in short bursts with all dogs, but especially the puppies like Bella. Rosie learned the command today too and she really liked it! Mostly, I think, because it involved a treat.

Once Bella had her training and running session, she came back to our house for a short game of romp and then Gretchen and I walked Bella home.

romp time

We moseyed on down the street and picked up the other puppy, Saber who is the same color as Bella, but not the same dog at all. He’s a lab and let me tell you, he picked up the look command even before Gretchen taught it to him!

viewpointsviewpoint2

Here we are at the Mt. Baker viewpoint overlooking the city. Gretchen attached Saber’s leash to the stone bench and I was put in a sit/stay (something I’m very good at). Then she said, “look” and we obeyed! Of course, a treat always follows the command so that helps us both focus.

But Saber has the “look” command down, let me tell you, as Gretchen tried it again at the tractor and then at the park while we were playing. Look at how well that boy obeys!

tractor shotat the park

Ironically, on the way down from the tractor, Saber smelled the exact same spot as Bella and Rosie did before him. Well, that sure made me interested so I smelled it too. Not sure what it was, but it was very smelly!

Saber got some extra long attention today because we didn’t have too much work. We went on a long walk and then played some at the park.

racing

Finally, we both just laid down and rested in the shade of a tree while Gretchen attempted to capture us in all of our cuteness.  But every time Gretchen squatted down to take the photo, Saber would get up and inch closer. Eventually, though, she got the shot!

upfinally

I guess the next command we’ll teach him will be stay!  That’s one I’m pretty good at if I do say so myself!

Until tomorrow,

Rubin

A Day of Laborlooking up to me

With the amount of rain we’ve had falling lately, I guess it’s fair to say that summer if really over. Fall is here and even though there are predictions for warmer temperatures later this week, I’m not fooled. Yesterday, I hardly got to go out nor was I all that interested in going out. The rain came down in sheets and then there was thunder off in the distance. This all made me very nervous, though later, as I realized I wouldn’t be playing much outdoors, I really got antsy in the evening.

But today is a new day and as I type, another cloud just opened up over the house. I can hear the not-so-soft pitter patter of rain once again playing a loud symphony on our roof. Great.

Being Labor Day and all, when most humans have the day off, our work was light today. We started with is home that way?Oshi and Perrito. Luckily, we didn’t have to walk in the rain with them. The clouds stayed closed until we got home.

We walked down to the park, but every where was occupied — the small field, the tennis courts, even the large field — so we decided to play in the grassy area by the play sets where no one was playing.

Well, we were.

Okay, Perrito and I were. Oshi just sat there, uninterested in anything except sitting as close to Gretchen’s pack as he could and then, when it was time to go, racing ahead to lead the way.

Next up was Bella. Gretchen walked her alone at first since that seems to be the best way to get her to listen. She’s so interested in everything that if I walk along, she can’t focus on heeling or walking in a straight line. The weather seemed to hype her up even more. So after their walk, they came back to the house where Bella and I got to roll around in the wet grass. Gretchen wasn’t too pleased as I had just had a bath, but I was thrilled and in turn, Bella was pretty excited as well. We didn’t get to play long, though, because the rain really started to come down and Gretchen wanted to protect the camera.

Notice, if you will, which of us is wearing my red raincoat. Yep, I avoided wearing it one more time!

We walked Bella back to her house, gave her a nice rub down, and then picked up baby Saber only he’s not so baby any more. He’s growing by pounds every day and is, in fact, heavier (though smaller) than me. Amazing. We went to the park where he chased me while I chased the ball, but it didn’t take long for him to tire out.

As you can see, the rain went away for awhile and we got to play in the sunshine. Saber is doing really well with his recall commands. It’s probably because he’s quick to notice the treats in Gretchen’s pocket. He’ll do just about anything to get one…or two…or three or four!

To finish off, we went for a short walk through the park so he could cool down before we rubbed him down, too, and left him at his home to rest before his parents returned.

That was it for work today. Not too much labor, though when we got home there was baking to do, soup to make, and sprucing up the house for Quillette’s arrival. She went camping this weekend, poor girl! This weather must have made for one soggy dog! I bet she’ll be as happy to see me as I will be to see her!

Until tomorrow,

A Long Time Goneready for home

All week long I felt as if I were waiting for Friday to arrive. We’ve been busy this week and while Gretchen has made certain that neither Monty nor I had to work too much, we were both pretty tired by the time today (Friday) rolled around. But what could we do? We can’t call in sick now, can we? And we’re not really sick, we just, like most humans, were looking forward to the weekend.

Monty’s really looking forward to the weekend because his mom comes home Saturday night and he’s really, really missed her. He hasn’t said anything, but we can all tell that he wants to go home, lie on the bed with his mom, and get back to his normal routine. I imagine his mom wants the same thing after two weeks in foreign countries. Saturday night, when they reunite, will be golden for both of them. I can hardly wait to see it.

But meanwhile, there’s work to be done starting with walking Gretchen to her teaching job each morning. Since Ann, my other mom, starts teaching later, she goes with us as we make our way through the neighborhood. When Ann leaves for work, Monty and I wait for Gretchen to return though today she came later than usual, which was nice because we really got to sleep.

For Gretchen, the first dogs on the docket were Gemma and Saber. I think I’m glad I was sleeping through their time together.

it's ongame on

They run around for the first five minutes, but since Saber is young, he gets a bit more tired than Gemma so he lies down. Gemma, on the other hand, races around and around him poking at him every now and then as if trying to find the ON switch.

Saber watches and watches and watches and Gemma runs and runs and runs.

Eventually, Saber gives in to Gemma’s taunting and off they go again chasing and wrestling for another five minutes.

Until finally, Gretchen says “Look, treats!” and they both come running, happily sit down, and wait for a snack. In 15 minutes of playing with Gemma running five times as much as Saber, they are both ready for a cool down walk and they make their way through the park and eventually back to Saber’s house. Gemma gets another half hour and that’s when she gets to visit us at home. Though rain is predicted for the weekend, it was a warm, sunny day and surprisingly, instead of wanting to play with us, Gemma sat in the cool grass of the yard under the shade of the cherry tree content to just rest.

Next up was Rosie AND Tyson. Tyson often goes with Maureen on park trip play dates during the week, but she was on vacation today and so Gretchen got to walk the two big boxers by herself.  They were thrilled to see her and enjoyed their stroll through the neighborhood even smiling for their photo shoot.

look here!that's it

These are two very big dogs. It’s hard to see it when they stand next to each other, but when Gretchen walks them, Tyson’s (on the left) head is right at her hip. He walked there the whole way except when he had to do his business and then he politely asked if he could pee on a bush or poop in the grass. Rosie obviously loves Tyson and wanted to walk right by his side, but since Gretchen’s left arm isn’t that strong, she asked her to walk on the right. Rosie was happy to comply.

After Rosie and Tyson were dropped off at their home and given a few treats, Gretchen walked up a block to pick up Bella. Surprisingly, we have four dog clients all living on the same street just a few blocks away from each other. Nice, very, very nice.

Bella struggled a bit with “heel” on Thursday, but today she was a new dog walking right by Gretchen’s left side and paying close attention to her commands. They walked north toward the park and then winded their way through the neighborhoods learning to stay focused even with distractions. Bella did a stellar job on the entire walk and earned a well-deserved play time with me in our back yard!

Monty was with us, but he basically tried to stay out of the way observing our wild play from a distance.

Of course, that doesn’t mean that Bella leaves him alone. She’s definitely respectful of Monty, but every once in awhile, she gets a little more courage and tests the Monty waters.

But then she runs back to me and we continue to play while Monty looks on, his nose slightly in the air.

I got to walk Bella home after our play time and again she behaved like an almost adult dog, not pestering me or nipping at me as we walked. Gretchen was impressed and thankful. A wild Bella is a workout for both of us!

On our way home, we picked up Oshi and Perrito. I used to think these two were wild…well, Perrito for sure, but now that I’ve played with real puppies — Gemma, Saber, and Bella — I’ve come to realize how relaxed these boys are. We went for a long walk through the neighborhood and then visited the other tennis courts, the ones we don’t visit very often, to play some fetch.

It was hot, though, so the game soon ended and Oshi begged to go back home for a cool drink of water.

it's hothome please?

Gretchen had to go back to school after this for some performance, but when she returned we all headed over to pick up Wilson — Monty, Ann, and me. Boy was he thrilled to see us all! We walked for awhile and then played some fetch at the little field.

As I’ve said, Monty and I were pretty tired, but Wilson was ready for action!  While Ann gave me a belly rub, Wilson pestered her to throw the ball again and again and again, which she did making Wilson one happy fellow.

Ann walked Monty back to our house and I helped Gretchen escort Wilson back through the neighborhoods to his house. By the time I got home, I was ready for some dinner and to curl up on my bed in the TV room while Ann and Gretchen watched a movie.

It’s been a long week and soon I’ll be sleeping in on a Saturday, the beginning of my well-deserved weekend.

Have a great one!

Bursts of the Unexpected

smiling bursts

In my line of work, I’ve come to appreciate bursts. By this I mean sudden, unexpected changes of schedules, behaviors, and emotions. Today was filled with such bursts of the most unexpected kind.

1) A burst of happiness:

This is best demonstrated by the one moment when Saber meets Gemma who waits patiently outside Saber’s door for him to emerge. Saber, generally sleepy, yawns out the door and then, once he sees Gemma, wags his puppy tail in a kind of slow, happy swing that increases in velocity and frequency when his sleepy eyes realize that Gemma is sitting patiently waiting for him. They walk, happily bouncing, to the park anxious to be allowed to play. Sometimes this happens in the little field, but sometimes, like today, it happens at the tennis courts where they burst into play the moment they are let off their leashes.

burst of playbiting bursts

2) Cloudbursts: Just when you think the day is going to be beautiful, sometimes the clouds have other ideas. One minute Gemma and Saber were rolling around in the sun, the next they were bounding through the rain! The wet weather didn’t slow them down a bit!

flying burstbiting burst

3) Burst of Calm: Despite the crazy, wild play, Saber and Gemma eventually settle down and just like the cloud burst, it happens quickly. Okay, mostly it happens because Gretchen says, “Look, treats!” and they both come running.

IMG_8226look burst

4) Burst of shyness

Gretchen has walked Rosie two times now and the best word to describe her is SHY. She’s very sweet and excited to see Gretchen, but she’s shy about pets, about putting the leash on, and really shy about getting her picture taken.

oh goshoh golly

Gretchen had to let Rosie smell the camera at first, that’s how shy and uncertain she is and once she did, then she burst into a cute smile.

5) Burst of energy: Rosie is the last dog Gretchen thought would show a burst of energy. Gemma, yes. Saber, yes. Bella, most definitely, but Rosie? After their photo shoot, they walked across the open field and Rosie burst forth in a mad dash. Gretchen ran beside her trying to capture the burst of unexpected energy on film. That’s one happy dog!

burst forthgo girl!

6) Chasing Burst: Gretchen walked Bella today and all went well practicing her heal. She walked Bella through the park and then stopped at our house so Bella and I could have a chasing burst. Monty just watched from the porch…

omgcome back here

7) Tumbling Burst: Bella and I chase each other around a lot and then, all of the sudden, we’re tumbling over each other.

tumblinghead over heels

8) Burst of Snarfling: Snarfling is Gretchen’s word for the times Bella and I lie on the ground, too tired to chase, too tired to really wrestle, and only have enough energy to make playful noises at each other. Gretchen calls those noises snarfling. Works for me.

snarfling1snarfling2

snarfling3snarfling 4

9) Stealing Bursts: This is a tricky one because planning to steal someone else’s toy takes timing and quickness. Notice Wilson and his unassuming behavior. In both instances, he’s stealing someone else’s ball!

standing in waitthe rolling steal

10) A burst of rest: Monty is really good at this one. He fetches his ball and then he curls up on the grass for a rest. Usually Wilson never rests, but tonight even he joined in! Check out that tired tongue!

restingwilson rest

11) Demanding Bursts: We all have ways of demanding that someone play with us. I tend to bark though not usually when playing fetch. Monty just drops the ball and takes off running positively convinced you’re going to throw the ball. Wilson gives you that look like, “Please, please, please?” He has many versions of it!

beggingclose up begging

12) Burst of Bliss: There is a moment in my day when I am the happiest — a ball in my mouth, racing across the field feeling happy and content. This, my friends, is bliss…for Wilson, too!

bliss timebliss2

13) A Burst of Friendship: I may have moments when I get grumpy — snarl at the other dogs who are in my space or persistently trying to get my attention — but most of the time, being a dog dog walker is all about my friendships with all the dogs that we walk. Truly, these are some of the best dogs ever and I’m one lucky guy who gets to spend time with such company. I was reminded of that tonight when Gretchen said, “Look, treats!” and we all lined up to get them. Monty gets a little impatient and in a classic Monty move, leans back his head slowly and woofs. It made Wilson and me laugh…as you’ll see! This was truly a burst of friendship moment.

More unexpected bursts to come someday, but for now, I’m ready to call it a night. Sleep well everyone!

Until tomorrow,

Rubin

Minding My Own Business

you two!

Older and wiser, I’ve learned the best way to deal with wild puppies is to mind my own business. Take today, for instance. We walked Gretchen to her first day of teaching and then rested at home until she arrived to pick me up. Monty got to rest. Then we walked over to get Gemma who was happy, as usual, to see us. Next, we got Saber and headed to the park where the two lovebirds played with wild abandon. I just watched. Those two!

I got tired just watching them though I had enough energy to play some fetch. They just had energy to chase each other around and then roll on the grass in a ball of puppyness. Gemma is really fast so mostly it’s Saber in hot pursuit of Gemma.

chasingpursuit

But Saber is still young and he tires out quickly. That doesn’t stop Gemma. She pesters him into at least wrestling with her! Meanwhile, I stay out of their way as best I can and chase my ball!

I'm tiredfetching

At one point Saber even tried to just relax, but in swooped Gemma one more time!

restingnot resting

But don’t be fooled…Saber can hold his own!

here he comesclose up

Then we headed to the tennis courts for a change of scenery and there the two lovebirds continued their chase and wrestle routine, but eventually all slowed down enough for a photo op.

stopped

We took Saber home after this and then Gemma walked me home so I could rest with Monty. Gretchen took Gemma on the rest of her walk and then she finally took Gemma home as well.

Next up, a new dog, Rosie. Rosie is an older boxer who has had lots and lots of medical procedures. Still, she’s a big strong dog who likes to get out and smell the pee mail. Gretchen took her to all our favorite spots. First, for a photo shoot at the Mt. Baker lookout.

lookout

Then they walked down to the tennis courts, but Rosie isn’t much of a ball dog. Mostly she followed Gretchen around the courts while Gretchen jogged excitedly trying to get Rosie to play. As I’ve said, Rosie’s been through a lot, so she was a little hesitant to play. I mean, just look at that scar!

followinga little nervous

But Gretchen did get Rosie to cock her head and that you have to admit, is pretty cute.

uh?what?

Bella was next and trust me, with Bella you really have to mind your own business. It’s difficult to do. Monty has somehow mastered it. Here we are resting on the porch in the sun when in swoops Bella. We just let her pass and she just keeps running.

restingpassing through

Before Bella came to the house for a visit, Gretchen took her on a walk and then they stopped by the tennis courts to burn off some of Bella’s limitless energy.

She sure had plenty of energy left when she finally did get to our house. We wrestled and chased while Monty, as only Monty can, ignored us on the porch.

Monty ignoringcharge!

I think I did finally tire her out because Gretchen reported later that Bella walked home in a perfect heal. Ah, my work is done!

I asked Gretchen if I could stay home and rest some more after Bella. She’s a work out and Gretchen agreed so she headed out to walk Oshi and Perrito by herself. They walked around the neighborhood and through the park and then played a little in the shade. It was hot for a September afternoon and both the boys appreciated the cool respite.

And while Gretchen took the photos she noticed something she hadn’t seen in awhile…the fall colors starting to appear. See the tree behind Perrito? Yep, golden leaves.

The final walk of the day was this evening with our buddy Wilson. He gets so excited to see us, he barks and barks and barks and then gives us each a kiss. Monty tolerates it, believe it or not, and I, well, I kind of like how happy Wilson gets when he sees us. I mean, it’s nice to be appreciated.

Remember the other day when I wrote about the evening shadows? Well, they were out again tonight and Gretchen got some nice pictures. My favorite is of Monty, Wilson, and Gretchen’s long, long shadow.

tall shadow

Wilson likes to play fetch, but Monty and I were kind of worn out. He played and we laid in the cool grass and watched him run by again and again. Okay, we played some, but Wilson was center stage tonight especially when Mikey and Sparky showed up.

We ended the games like we always do. Gretchen reaches in her backpack and pulls out treats. That gets Monty’s attention. Wilson showed some interest and eventually so did I. It’s been a long day and a tasty treat is a great way to end the evening…that and the nice slow walk back to Wilson’s house where he says goodbye with a kiss as well. Now that’s the kind of business I don’t mind at all.

Kisses to all of you! Until tomorrow,

Rubin
