BellaA New Gal in Town

I’ll admit it — I like girls. Sure, most of my dog friends are boys — Monty, Oshi, Perrito, Wilson, Ollie and more — but I’ve always had a special place in my heart for girls. It started, I suspect, with Lucy. She was the first girl-dog I met and we bonded quickly, chasing each other around the house and then the yard and curling up together in my dog bed.

Quillette made me appreciate more mature females and has had the opportunity to school me in various canine ways. When Gemma entered my life, she brought that youthful playfulness I’d missed for awhile and now, well now there’s Bella. Isn’t she adorable?

Bella is a new client who is six months old. I met her briefly at the park weeks ago, but I was too busy playing fetch with my boy-friends to really notice her. (Truth is, I didn’t want my buddies to tease me about my new crush!) Today I wasn’t going to actually meet her, but after Gretchen took her on a walk along the ridge (where the above photo was taken) she decided that Bella and I would enjoy each other. That Gretchen…she really knows me, doesn’t she?

But I’m way ahead of myself.  Our day began early in the morning, earlier than normal with a solo walk — just me and Gretchen. On our walk, she explained how our routine was going to change and that during the week, I’d have the mornings to myself on most days because she was going back to teaching part-time. “You’ll get to go to school with me occasionally,” she said, “But school can be exhausting and with your job as a dog dog walker, I want to make certain you don’t get over tired. So, I think it would be best if you stayed home some mornings to rest up for your busy work day.”

Huh? What is she thinking?

She went off to school without me and I was a pretty unhappy fellow.  I laid on my bed and waited, but I wasn’t pleased. She did return, I’ll give her that, and we went on a walk with the boys next door — Oshi and Perrito.

We headed to the park, which was fun though the day was getting warm and I was still a little miffed about the change of schedule. But then Gemma and her dad showed up and well, I let go of my irritations and we all played with abandon!

Me and Gemmafriends

Perrito liked Gemma … at first…but that Gemma is persistent and after awhile, Perrito was being chased by Ms. Persistence and he wasn’t so sure that was a good thing! Gemma? Well, she just kept coming — through everyone and everything trying to chase Perrito.  Pretty soon, Perrito hung out as close as he could get with Oshi. You could hardly tell where one dog began and the other ended!

Let’s just say, everyone got a workout thanks to Gemma. That’s my girl!

Gretchen took me back home with the boys and once again, I was left alone. I’m not sure I like this new routine, but she explained that it was just a temporary move. “I want to walk Bella to see how she is with just me and if all goes well, I’ll bring her back here, okay?”

Let’s just say, I was skeptical…

…until Bella came to visit.

As I’ve said, Gretchen took Bella for a nice long walk just to get to know her before she came back to our house. What did Gretchen learn about Ms. Bella? Well, she doesn’t like metal grates (just like me!), she’s a bit shy of new things like loud noises and flapping flags, and she’s very, very curious about people, smells, and yes, Gretchen’s camera!

I asked Gretchen later why she decided to bring her back to our house and she said, “Well, on our walk, Bella did really well practicing her commands — heal, sit, wait — and I didn’t want our first day together to be all work and no play. Besides, Bella doesn’t have a yard she can run around in and I felt bad that I had to leave you at home twice today, so I thought it best to bring her home.”

Oh, am I ever-so sorry I doubted Gretchen!

It didn’t take long for Bella and me to hit it off. She was very gracious with the first meeting and once we got into the backyard, she invited me with a play bow and a head toss. That’s all it took because she’s one cute girl and cute girls are very hard for me to resist!

We started our play session with a game of chase…

Then I tried to teach Bella how to play hide and seek, but she was really good at finding me…

But eventually, we both got tired. Bella rolled in the grass, while I tried to sneak away and hide behind Ann who’d come home for lunch.

And eventually, to give me a needed break, I went inside the house while Bella found the water bowl. Bella was none too pleased about my escape, but hey, a guy’s gotta rest from all that cute girl energy every now and then!

thirsty girlcome out!

As you can see, it’s been quite a change of schedule. I’m over it now, though in the beginning, I was a bit unsettled by it all. Meeting Bella, though, made up for it in spades.

Yes sir, I like girls very much!

Until tomorrow,

Rubin

Unexpected Adventures

You’d think I’d realize by now that my life is anything but predictable. Just when I was getting into the hang of my work, I was forced to take a two week break!  But now I’m back to work and nothing we do follows a natural plan.  That’s difficult for me since, as a poodle, I kind of like predictability. I like a schedule — to know when we walk, to know when we eat, to know when I’ll be left alone, to know when we sleep.

Take today, for instance. It’s Friday, which makes it a Monty day, first thing, all day. When we walk up the street to get Monty, he hears us and lets out a loud series of deep, happy barks and then races down the stairs of his town home to greet us at the front door. We leash up, head out the door, and usually go for a pretty long walk.

That seemed to be the direction we were heading today, until we took a turn at the top of the hill and headed toward Dog Mania — the groomer. What? Wasn’t I just here? When it’s time for the groomer (or the Spaw as Gretchen likes to call it!), usually Monty and I go together, but I’d Greetingbeen just 3 weeks ago and if you look at me closely, you’ll see that my hair is still in pretty good shape. So what was going on here, I wondered.

We got to Dog Mania before it opened and waited outside with a Portuguese Water Dog named Sophie who looked a lot like Monty. Monty, never one to miss an opportunity to shakingsocialize, greeted Sophie only to find out that she is a nervous Nelly when it’s grooming time. Hey, I can relate. So, while Monty waltzed in to enjoy his day at the Spaw, Sophie shook by her mother’s side sending every dog signal in the world that this is not at all how she intended to spend her day.

Me neither, Soph! I guess that’s why I was relieved when I saw Monty go behind the gate and I stayed inside the shop, but not INSIDE THE SHOP, if you know what I mean. The shop dog – Tika – did her best to annoy Sophie into submission by barking hysterically, but Sophie still wasn’t buying it.  I thought about happy clamsticking around to help her out, but then common sense got the better of me and I left Monty INSIDE THE SHOP, happy as a clam, while I walked to the park for a game of fetch with Ann and Gretchen.

Fetch is a daily expectation I have, but today, my expectations were exceeded when we met Harry at the park. I like Harry. Is such a pleasant fellow and he never tries to steal my ball. Soon though, Gypsy and Dixie showed up and I can’t say the same for Dixie — she LOVES to steal my ball. They came to the park with their neighbor’s dog – Mocha – who is a chocolate lab we often pass on our walks through the neighborhood.

Mocha often barks at us from behind the gate so when I saw him in the park I was a little leary, uncertain if he and I would get along well. But Mocha turned out to be a loner kind of dog, preferring to play in his corner of the park while I played in mine.

Meanwhile, Dixie milked some loving from Ann, Gypsy ran around like a crazy fool, and Harry stood by Gretchen (holder of the treats) and smiled his Harry smile.

After a nice long visit, we headed back to the house because there was much to do today. We have a birthday cake to bake for our friend, Lisa, some pasta sauce to make for tonight’s dinner, and an attempt to make Grandma’s cheese and thyme crackers. Oh, and we had to walk Oshi and Perrito.

Nothing unexpected happened here, but after my long game of fetch this morning, I wasn’t as excited to play this afternoon. Perrito was the one who found this unexpected as he did the interesting smells in the grass that kept his attention for most of our time there. Oshi, on the other hand, was captivated by the smell of the air and lifted his little head constantly to find the source of the wafting odor.

I didn’t smell a thing.  I just got the ball, laid in the grass, and rest a bit.  We walked back through the park after that and aside from the odd man lying on the picnic table with his shoes off, not much unexpected happened then, either. Now home, I’m ready for my afternoon nap and then it’s back to the cake, the pasta sauce, and those tasty crackers. I sure hope one falls on the floor!

Until tomorrow,

Rubin

PS — We’re also waiting for the phone to let us know that Monty is washed and ready. Maybe he’ll have more unexpected stories to tell!

PSS — I got a great nap and soon after we got the phone call. We marched back up the hill to the Spaw and fetched Monty who, if I do say so myself, looks like a new man! What do you think?

We’ll Miss HerAnn with dogs

The best part about this summer has been that Ann has joined us on many of our adventures. She did so again today, which allowed us to take all our charges out at one time.

We walked up to Ollie’s house first thing and he was thrilled, as usual, to see all of us ready to go on our adventure. From there, we walked through the neighborhood, down through the parks to Wilson’s house who was also one happy puppy. In fact, he was so happy, he kind of piddled a bit on the driveway, but we didn’t tease him about it. After all, it’s been weeks since we’ve all seen each other. Who can blame the guy?

Getting us all moving forward took a bit of time because Ollie wanted to play right away and Wilson was all for it. If it had just been Gretchen walking us, we would have been a tangled mess in seconds flat, but because Ann came along, we got on our way pretty quickly — straight to the park to play fetch!

Wilson thinks fetch is a wonderful game and is very faithful about getting the ball, bringing it back, and waiting for the next toss.

Fetch timewaiting for the ball

Ollie, on the other hand, likes to chase us more than he likes to chase the ball. He lies in wait and then pounces on us from out of nowhere!

But none of it deters Wilson and me. We just keep playing. And today, since Ann was with us, she threw the ball and Gretchen took photos!

Gretchen liked being able to focus on photography while Ann managed us. And she didn’t just throw the ball, either!

Yes, we’re all going to miss Ann after she returns to her teaching job, but having her with us this summer has been extra, extra special for all us. Thanks Ann!

Until tomorrow,

August 12, 2009

back at itI’m Baaaaaaccckkk!

Two weeks of rest has done a world of good for my carpal tunnel. I’m refreshed and revised and ready to romp and that’s just what I did today with a full load of work on my very large plate.

First up, a walk with Quillette and Monty. Quillette is staying with us for a few days, but will be venturing off to other homes while her mom is away on an extended journey. Quillette will join us for the full month of September and I, for one, in very much looking forward to it. She’s fun to hang out with and she never tries to still my food.

Monty was scheduled for a walk today, but he, too, will be joining us while his mom travels in Ireland later this month. That will be super fun as Monty is my very best friend in the whole wide world. But for today, it was enough to hang out with the both of them and attend to our business of walking dogs.

We had an unexpected play time on our first walk of the day, though. We ran into Richard just as he was heading out with Ginger.  I was so excited to see them, I could barely keep my curls on!  I recently got to spend some time with Richard and Ginger and let me tell you, those two live in dog heaven. They eat pork for lunch, they go swimming in the lake, and they sleep on a big bed that I got to share with them. It’s incredible. You can imagine how happy I was to see them this morning and Quillette and Monty were thrilled as well.  We all walked over to the little park and played like wild children!

Ginger, as is her style, never stopped moving and showed Monty a few new dance steps she picked up at a recent Doggie Ball…

wild gingerdance moves

Quillette spent her whole time staring at Richard because he always comes equipped with special treats! And some times she even barks at him! How demanding is that?

following Richardbarking at Richard

Monty, Ginger and I just play fetch and leave all that begging to Quillette. We know that when Richard is ready, he’ll dole out the treats to all of us! Sometimes we rest, too, because playing fetch is hard work first thing in the morning.

monty/gingerresting

rolling resting/begging

Of course notice that Ginger NEVER rests. For a 10 year old she is like the Energizer Bunny I see on TV. She just keeps going!

always runningtwo balls

Unlike Quillette, Ginger likes to steal my food. She did so when I spent the night at her house, so I shouldn’t have been surprised when she stole TWO of my favorite orange and blue balls. Gretchen says I need to be nice to the elderly, but sometimes it’s hard to be polite!

After our romp, we walked with Richard and Ginger up to Bradner Gardens, got ourselves a drink and then headed back to the house where we dropped off Quillette (she needed a rest) and picked up Ann who came with us on a walk and romp with Ollie!

Ollie was happy to see me, but did a good job of not jumping up too much.  Monty, Ann, Ollie, Gretchen, and I headed down through Frink Park we we got to play chase.

runningOllie is always a little shy around Monty and me. I think it’s because we’re kind of big and the two of us like to play rough. We race along the trails, ram into each other and then practice boxing, raising ourselves up on our hind legs and letting our front legs swing.

I suppose when you’re Ollie’s size that can be pretty overwhelming, but he held his own today.  He raced along the trails with us and watched as Monty and I wrestled along the way. It’s hard to see, but the picture on the left shows all three of us racing down the path — Ollie’s right behind me blending in with the brown foliage, and Monty is right behind Ollie trying to catch up! I guess I’m a pretty fast dog, but Monty can get his big body moving pretty fast, too. Ollie just goes up as if on springs.

Often, though, he stood out of our way and smiled his original Ollie smile!

We then walked along the lake, up through the tunnel, and back home where Ann, Monty, and I rested with Quillette, while Ollie and Gretchen fetched Oshi and Perrito for a long walk and romp at the tennis courts.

When they got to the courts, Matilda, a 7 month old puppy, was just outside the fence and all the boys were very interested in her! Can you see her on the other side of the fence? If not, you can see the focused excitement of the three boys on their side!

But Matilda moved on and the boys played fetch and chase and practiced being silly!

I guess Oshi and Perrito are more Ollie’s size. He had fun being chased and watching the boys be the boys that they are…silly!

After their busy time at the tennis courts, Oshi and Perrito helped Gretchen walk Ollie home. Oshi was none too pleased preferring to go home, but Gretchen wanted to make certain the boys got lots of exercise today so she made Oshi take the long walk to Ollie’s house. Ollie was happy to have the company.

By the time Gretchen got home, Quillette, Monty, and I were all sacked out in the sun — three friends relaxing!

on the porch

We just finished our last walk down through the park. It was humid today and ended up being quite warm this afternoon. Usually when we drop Monty off at his house, he’s hesitant to go inside, but not today. He was tired and hot and ready to rest in the cool shade of his house.  Quillette and I headed home. She’s resting now while I finish up the blog. Then I’m going to give Gretchen that stare, the one I learned from Quillette and Monty — the one that says, “Isn’t time I got fed?”

It’s a beautiful life!
