B4 Afta

b4Sometimes human language confuses me. I hear so much of it all day long, you’d think I’d be fluent in it, but unfortunately, I’m not. But I am learning how powerful human words can be even if I don’t always understand them.

I’m not feeling particularly serious tonight, so I’ll save the meatier discussion of powerful words for another time. For now, I’ll focus on two words I have yet to wrap my canine head around.

B4

Since human spelling is as difficult as human language, this is the best I can do with the spelling of a word I hear every time someone (including me) goes to the groomer. I love our groomer, but I’ll be perfectly honest; I also hate her. She’s nice one minute then clipping my nails the next. She gives me treats and speaks to me in Spanish (my favorite language) and then runs a comb through my tail (something I particularly disdain!).

Every pre-grooming visit the B4 word gets thrown around a lot, so when I heard Gretchen use it this morning, I instantly thought about the groomer. Lucky for me, Gretchen wasn’t referring to me when she used the word B4; she was thinking of Oshi and Perrito. Poor guys.  They spent the day at the groomers and Gretchen snapped this picture of them with their mom as they made their way to the shop.

I got left at home with my buddy Monty. Whew. We dodged a bullet there, didn’t we? We had a great walk earlier that morning, sohowling leaving us behind while Oshi and Perrito went to visit the groomer was just fine by us.  When Gretchen returned, she fed us and then headed out the door again. I was a little miffed, but when she returned with Gemma, I was a happy puppy once more. Only Gretchen came through the back gate and the back door was locked. Oh that made me very upset because I couldn’t say hello to Gretchen or play with Gemma!

I howled!

Gemma was pretty upset too and Monty stood by me and wondered why no one opened the door.

It was locked so there we stood, stuck and upset.

Luckily, Ann was in the front yard, heard our desperate pleas, and opened up the back door.

Let the games begin!

First game? Gemma wants my purple rubber ball. She tried everything from asking nicely, stealing it from underneath, and ignoring it. Let’s just say, she never got it, so she had to appease her playfulness by romping it up with Monty!

ball timecan I have it?

ignoringwho me?

Normally, Monty finds Gemma a tad bit annoying. He’s like that with puppies. He was like that with me early on, but once I reached a certain age, we were playmates for life!  I guess Gemma reached the right age because, while I played with my purple rubber ball, Monty and Gemma had a field day!

gemma timegotcha

roll overtake down

I got a little jealous, it’s true, so I tried to entice Gemma with my purple rubber ball. It didn’t work. She was beat from her Monty games and laid against the stone wall to cool off.

want it?beat

I was kind of beat, too, so Gretchen left Monty and me at home, while she took Gemma back to her house. When Gretchen returned, Monty and I were loaded into the car to visit Teabiscuit! What a treat!  Okay, so she wasn’t too thrilled at first, being shy and all, but once we hit the road, she was happy to see us!  Can you see it in her face?

biscuit time!

Okay, maybe not in this picture, but after we walked a ways, she was all excited for a rest in the shade. It was hot today and all of us, Gretchen included, needed a short breather. I used the opportunity for a good roll in the grass. Ahhhh….

cooling offAhhhh

And that’s when Teasbiscuit decided to rest next to the big guy. Now you can see she’s happy!

small/bighappy

I was tired once we returned Teabiscuit back home and Monty was too, so when Gretchen took off on her bicycle with Ann, I was happy for the rest in the cool house.  When they got home, that’s when another word that shows up on spa days surfaced — AFTA. We all walked out on the porch and there were Oshi and Perrito in their mom’s arms all gussied up and sporting new doos. Gretchen got so excited and said, “I need to get an AFTA by the apple tree, too!”

What?

porch shotapple tree

Yep, that’s Oshi and Perrito. Can’t tell the difference?

Here’s Oshi…

Oshi

Clean shaven and looking good, isn’t he?

And then there’s Perrito…yep, with a mohawk!  Totally fits him.  Totally!

mohawk

Is that what they mean by AFTA?  Your hair rises up out of the middle of your head?  Humans. It’s so hard to figure them out. No matter, the boys looked good, I had a fun-filled day, and now I get to go to sleep on my nice cushy bed. Life doesn’t get any better than this!

Until tomorrow,

yikesStorming the Bastille!

The French have importance in our family. I’m not exactly sure how other than that Ann’s mom is French and Ann herself was born in France, but today the colors of France rang throughout the house when Ann woke up singing the French National Anthem at the top of her voice.

Wow, what a song. Kind of bloody and all, but still inspiring.

And when Gemma and Ollie realized the importance of the day, they showed me how the peasants stormed the Bastille!

bastille1bastille2

bastille3bastille4

Of course, the ycharged each other a lot, too (as you can see from the last photo) so I guess I shouldn’t complain.

The day did not start out with Ollie and Gemma though. It started out with Oshi and Perrito. Usually we don’t walk them on Tuesdays, but since I was vacationing in Oregon, they agreed to shift to Tuesday. Thanks guys!

We went for a walk and Ann came with us as we headed up to Ollie’s house to see if he wanted to join us. He gave a resounding YES to our invitation and we all headed back to my house for some play time.  Oshi and Perrito weren’t as into playing as Ollie and I were, though, so they hung out while we played.

Oshi played a little bit, but when Ollie and I went at it, he scurried over to Gretchen and huddled under her legs. That just gave Ollie and me a lot more room to really romp and romp we did!

At one point Oshi tried to wander back onto the porch, and that’s when I noticed something hanging off his bottom. I tried not to laugh, but I couldn’t help myself.

oops

That’s when Oshi decided it was time to go back home. Sorry, buddy. Hope I didn’t hurt your feelings!

And then Gretchen went to Gemma’s house, picked her up, brought her back to our house and the three of us — Ollie, Gemma, and I — headed to the park for more romping and fetch.  By that time, Ollie was pretty tired and I was fading a bit, but Gemma was raring to go. Luckily, there were some swallows she could chase after we got tired of her chasing us! She loved that.

But eventually, even Gemma got tired and that’s when we all hung out in the shade before walking Ollie and Gemma home.

Storming the Bastille is a lot like dog walking — it can really wear a guy out!

Onward tomorrow, though. Full day that promises hot temperatures and perhaps a trip to the lake!

Until then,

Rubin

PS – What’s a Bastille and why would we want to storm it?

Time Off

It’s summer and so, we have taken a few trips with a few more planned. This weekend, we headed south to visit Uncle Paul and Aunt  Patti and my canine cousins — Hope and Ringo. I won’t bore you with all the details, but here are some of my favorite highlights:

I’m Older Now

When I first arrived into the family, the first people I met aside from my moms were my Aunt and Uncle. One of my first photographs was taken on their porch. Here’s a comparison — Now and Then

older nowporchportrait

Hanging Out with Family

My family is pretty silly. My aunt and uncle have a hanging swing and Ann made me swing in it. I was leery at first, but after awhile, I was loving it.

Grandpa, on the other hand, may look serious in this photo, but he’s a real laugh. I mean, just look at that hat!

hanginggrandpaw

Uncle Paul and Aunt Patti have a beautiful home overlooking this amazing valley where grapevines and walnut trees dot the landscape. They also have a really cool garden of their own. Remember, I have a very silly family!

Canine Cousins

Hope is the older cousin — 11 years approximately — and Ringo the younger — about 6 years old.  They sometimes have issues with each other, but they get over it pretty quickly. Gretchen tells me that this is common with Jack Russell Terriers. I actually know this first hand since I’ve had a scuffle with a pair myself so Gretchen kept referring to this as my Jack Russell Rehabilitation Camp.

togetherhoperingo

Ringo and Hope like to hunt squirrels who live in the juniper bushes in their backyard. Let me tell you, while I may get excited about a squirrel, these to are amazing, walking on the prickly juniper and diving into without a single qualm.

kingohope

And what’s a summer vacation without running through the sprinklers?

sprinklerkeep away

My orange and blue ball was a hit. Ringo rips up everything, but not this baby! So we went out shopping for his own orange and blue ball. He was very happy with his gift!

Lastly, Aunt Patti and Uncle Paul have a hot tub. Now, while I like to go swimming very much, I was banned from diving into the hot tub. That was okay because it looked mighty warm. Ringo, on the other hand, was always threatening to go in.  He never did, but let me tell you, he thought about it.

I thought about how happy I am to have such a wonderful family!

Back to work tomorrow.  See you all then!

Blonds, Red Heads, and Mr. Salt and Pepper

What a day! What a week!  I’m exhausted and very happy the weekend has arrived. Today I had an epiphany, which is surprising considering how busy I’ve been, but Gretchen tells me that epiphanies happen when you least expect them so I guess that’s what happened to me.

Here it is: Most of our clients are blond haired or red headed. Ollie and Gemma are red heads and everybody else, except for Monty and Lucy, are blonds.  Well of course, there is Woobie who we see occasionally and she’s most like Monty in her salt and pepper appearance, and there’s Argo who is also salt and pepper, but the majority of our clients are blond-haired or red headed.

I know, not a huge epiphany. Just one of those ah-has that pops into my mind while I work.  Gretchen says her epiphanies happen in the shower.  I may have to give that a try and see if I have any more ah-has, but frankly, I’m not a big fan of bathing.

So let me get on with the day…interesting as it was.

First, we picked up Monty and Quillette and went for a nice walk in the morning when it was still cool out. We all came back to my house and watched Gretchen start to clean the house when the phone rang. I’m not sure what was happening, but all the sudden Gretchen was taking everything out of the refrigerator and putting it into a cooler and a crate.

What’s up with that?

watchfulThen the three of us — Monty, Quillette, and I — were put into the backyard and two strange men came into the house wheeling something really, really big. I went crazy, barking as loud as I could. Quillette joined in, but Monty looked at me like “What’s up, dude?” But I was lost in my alarm and didn’t pay any attention to his calm demeanor. “There’s strangers in the kitchen. Bark already!”

Instead, Quillette and I stood at the sliding glass door and stayed as vigilant as we could watching the strange men wheeling the strange big box. Gretchen stayed outside with us to calm me down, but that made me a bit more worried. “Why are you out here with me when two strange men are in our kitchen?”
“Just wait, Rubin, you’ll see,” is all she said. Cold comfort, eh?dude!

Meanwhile, Monty tried to figure out why Quillette and I were so focused on the kitchen.

“What’s up, Gretchen? Why are they so stressed out?” Monty asked.

“They are nervous about the men in the kitchen, but they don’t need to be,” Gretchen responded. “It’s all going to be okay.”

“Duh,” Monty said.

And then he tried to play with me. That didn’t go over very well because I was really still nervous and so I snapped at him. I didn’t mean to, but it was not the time for playing. “Monty, two strange men. Need I say more?”

Eventually the men left and we were let back into the kitchen and what do you know…a brand new refrigerator stood where the old one used to be. Well why didn’t she tell us they were delivery men?

Humans.

Once I saw the new appliance, I was ready to play. So was Quillette.

cutenesscuteness2

And Monty continued to chill out by making faces at us…

yabadabadooo

Are all black and white dogs this goofy? I think not.

Eventually we all got hot and rested in the shade until it was time to go to work.

resting

First up, Oshi and Perrito. Monty and I had to stay back on this walk because Monty needed to eat lunch and I still hadn’t eaten my breakfast. So while Ann put all the goods back into the new fridge and we ate, Gretchen leashed up the blond (Quillette) and headed next door to get the two other blonds — though they have darker highlights — and off to the park they went to play fetch.

Only it got hot pretty quick and Oshi set the tone for the rest of their park visit…Perrito and Quillette soon joined him!

Yes, it was getting warm, but there were still more dogs to walk. Next up? The red head — Ms. Gemma. Gretchen returned Quillette to our house and she set off alone to pick up Gemma. Gemma was already hot and while she was happy to see Gretchen, she wasn’t her usual energetic self. It was too hot to be an energetic red head, but she tried.

trying

…but she didn’t try for very long. Gretchen ended up walking her around the park and then headed back to our house where Gemma was thrilled to see the hose filling up the pool!

I was pretty excited, too. There’s nothing like cold water to revive your energy levels!

Eventually, though, Gemma had to go home and Monty, Quillette and I hung out while Gretchen cleaned the house and Ann finished up cleaning the windows on the second floor.  We went for another walk before we took Monty and Quillette home and then Gretchen headed out to pick up Wilson. I was kind of sad because I thought I was being left at home while she fetched another blond, but when Ann put the leash on me and we met up with Gretchen and Wilson, I was very happy. I knew exactly where we were going…SWIMMING!

It felt great to get wet on such a warm day and I know Wilson appreciated it, too.  He was bouncy all the way back to his house, but me? I was dead tired. It’s been a long week and a long day and I’m ready to hit the sack. Are you?

I’ll leave you with another shot of Mt. Rainier. If you live in Seattle, you know how rare it is to see it in all it’s glory, so best snap as many pictures as you can when it’s out.

Energy Conservationsleep2

As pup, I knew two speeds — OFF and ON. Now, a little over two years later, I have familiarized myself with the gray areas between OFF and ON as well as learning the fine art of REST.

I need my rest. As a puppy, REST was a four-letter word and I avoided it by tearing up Kleenex boxes, running figure eights in the backyard, barking at my moms, and refusing to listen. Now REST feels necessary, though I’m still struggling with knowing when is a good time to take a rest. I’ll admit it.  I don’t like to be alone much. I’ll do it without much fuss, but if someone is leaving the house without me, I give them that sad-eyed, woe-is-me look in hopes that I might convince them to take me along — even if I only sit in the car while they shop for groceries.

But when I am left alone at home, when I lie on my bed in the living room, the one that faces the front door, I fall fast asleep and am glad my moms had the good sense to leave me home for some rest.

Today was a day peppered with rest. Turns out I needed it.

friendsWe didn’t start our work day until right before lunch. We had chores to do. Well, one really big chore — washing windows. We have lots of windows at our house and so while Ann worked on the inside (with help from Jessica), I followed Gretchen around on the outside. Quillette just walked around inside the house and made sure everyone was doing okay. Cleaning windows is hard work. Watching everyone clean windows was really hard work, but once Gretchen got done, she leashed me up and we headed over to Gemma’s house and then up to Ollie’s to begin our business day.

I enjoyed walking with my friends and I was kind of excited that the three of us might be able to play at the park, but before I knew it, we were walking back home and I was dropped off.

What?

Oh, time to rest.  I was a little miffed, I’ll admit it, but later, after a busy day and evening, I realized Gretchen made the right decision. So Gemma and Ollie got the park all to themselves and from what Gretchen tells me, they made the most of it!  And they are puppies still so they practiced the art of ON until they both gave into the OFF…take a look:

chasechase2

chase3chase4

They were ON alright, but then after much romping and chasing, they both headed for the shade and turned OFF, just like that!

Gemma offOllie off

Ollie is older than Gemma, so his off is still in the standing form. Gemma flops down with a thud when she’s turning off and her tongue has the habit of stretching out wide and long.  Wilson

When Gretchen returned home, Ann and Jessica were still washing windows on the inside. Gretchen grabbed some lunch, leashed me up (I was well rested now), and we headed over to Wilson’s house for an afternoon walk to the lake. Perfect! It was a warm day, not too warm, but still perfect for swimming and so both Wilson and I were thrilled when we walked in the direction of our favorite swimming spot.

Now Wilson, he’s a puppy. Hard to believe, I know, since he’s as big as a horse, but he is still a puppy in his ON/OFF sense of the world.  When he sees us walk through the door of his house, he is ON in every sense of the word and getting him to move forward in all of his excitement is a challenge for both Gretchen and me.

But once we get going, once Wilson realizes what we’re doing, he focuses his puppy attention — sort 0f — and is a bit more manageable. And once he realizes we’re going swimming, well, he walks in a straight line with only a few wiggles of excitement. At the lake, he’s all about the ball and all about the water…I guess I am too!

swimmingthe ball

wilson fetchme too

wilson againme again

And here is where Wilson and I show our age difference. When Gretchen leashes us back up for our walk home, I’m kind of bouncy, refreshed by my swim, but Wilson is downright silly. He takes about three steps and then flops himself on the ground and rolls around like a fiend. It’s hysterical.

rollingrolling2

rolling3rolling4

Gretchen said I did the same thing when I was Wilson’s age, but I have no memory of it.  None whatsoever…

rattlesnake18

That’s me? Really? After swimming? You doctored that photo, didn’t you Gretchen?

No? Well, what do you know.

We took Wilson home after our swim (and his roll) and then Ann, Gretchen, and I piled into the car and headed for agility class.  I love agility class and tonight I did really well hitting all my contacts (that’s agility speak for stopping on the mark I’m supposed to stop on), racing through the tunnels, and even racing across the teeter and hitting my contact at the end.  I haven’t done that much so I was really proud of myself. Ann and Gretchen were really proud of me, too.

I was ON in every sense of the word, but once I got into the car for the trip back home, I was OFF. Gretchen had to rouse me this evening to finish my blog, but trust me, once I’m finished here, it’s nighty-night for me!  I’m exhausted and at my mature age (2 1/2) I know I need my rest. Tomorrow is another day!

Until then,

Rubin

The Thought of This

It struck me today that my job as a dog dog walker is more than just walking dogs around the neighborhood. This blog, the chronicle of photographs, my reflections — it’s more of a historical document — a tome, as it were, of canine life in this corner of the world. You might not find that significant, but when I checked the statistics about who views this blog on a daily basis, I must admit my job and all that it encompasses, carries far more significance than I ever imagined.happy Wilson

I didn’t arrive at this profound awareness until the end of the day, in the evening actually, when we set out to play with Wilson, our last dog of the day. Wilson’s mom works nights and so, in the middle of her shift, we take Wilson on an adventure to tire him out. He likes it very much and by the time he returns, he curls up in front of the fan, calm and relaxed, and watches us leave with a smile on his face.

Wilson’s dad, on the other hand, is far away, deployed to Iraq. Wilson’s dad misses him very much and both Wilson’s parents worried about the transition so they hired me to keep Wilson happy and entertained while they were both away. I am honored to help out, but even more humbled by my work when Gretchen told me that Wilson’s dad reads my blog, every chance he can, from Iraq.

Wow.

what do I say?I am not a political fellow. Politics are for people, not dogs. Philosophy, on the other hand, is very much a canine domain and as you read today’s blog — no matter who you are or where you live –view the photographs as snapshots of a dog’s existential perspective on life. Look closely. Truly. We all say a lot with our faces, our tails, our whole bodies and in all of our contortions and postures, humans can learn a lot about how to live life in peace.

Since I’ve started with Wilson, let me continue with the end of the work day and spin my way back to the beginning.

Wilson and I went for a walk, Ann came with us, and we looked for a park where we could play fetch. Unfortunately, every park was busy with human activity, so we headed to the off-leash park where surprisingly, no other dogs were playing. So play we did — Wilson chased his orange and blue ball and I chased mine.

wilson ballmine

And then Mosher arrived.

Mosher

Mosher is a yellow Lab/hound mix and at 8 months old, he was a bit timid at first. Can you see it in his eyes? He wants to be your friend, but he wants to scope it all out first. And so he did, but in no time at all, Mosher decided to play.

play1play2

Now that’s a happy dog, don’t ya think? As much as Mosher wanted us to chase him, we were both focused on our individual games of fetch and so Mosher entertained himself by following us around.

One bad thing about playing at the off-leash park is that it’s very dirty. You can see by the dry grass and sandy surfaces that if we aren’t careful, we could end up in the bath tub after a romp in the park.  I’m apparently already scheduled for a bath, but Gretchen was worried about Wilson. Luckily, though, only his tongue got dirty.

cleandirty

And these two photos are a study in dog philosophy. In the first, Wilson is clearly contemplating the art of patience and in the second, he is practicing an ancient yoga (or doga as we call it) Asana — or yogic/dogic position of relaxation.  For his young age, he’s really mastered this relaxing pose, don’t you think?

Before Wilson, was Gemma. I didn’t go on a walk and romp with Gemma because I needed to eat my breakfast (which really was lunch by the time I decided to eat it…not much of a morning dog). But Gemma was not alone. On their walk, they ran into Quillette and Jessica and headed to the other tennis courts for a little bit of frolicking.

wanting to playhandful

Gemma is, as you well may know, a handful. Quillette is an elder and has mastered the way of schooling — of letting younger dogs know who is the boss.  Gemma persisted in playing with Quillette the way she plays with me, but Quillette held her at bay for quite awhile.

Neither dog really likes to play fetch, though both dogs are very interested in the ball.

go outbring back

Quillette likes to play soccer with her mom, so Jessica obliged and the two of them had a game of it.

soccersoccer1

soccer3soccer2

And only after a rousing came of soccer, did Quillette show Gemma any attention.

hellohello2

Can you see Quillette’s acceptance of Gemma, finally, in this last photo? And what do you think she’s contemplating here?

img_3108

Yes, it’s in the tail and the ears and those eyes. She is practicing the refined art of happiness.  After 10 years of life, she’s a master of it don’t you think?

Before Gemma and Quillette, were Oshi and Perrito. I didn’t get to go on this walk either. That dastardly breakfast/lunch thing again. It’s bad enough I have to eat, but then I have to digest and it really cuts into my play time.

But Oshi and Perrito got to go on a walk and they got to play a bit, though Oshi is not so interested in playing as he is in going home.

not playinghome?

Perrito would like to do nothing else but play and since Gretchen recently found out about his love of fetch, she threw the ball for him in hopes of running off a little of his playful steam. Only apparently Perrito wasn’t as much into fetch as he was into shoveling. Yes, he’d chase after the ball, but once he reached it, he didn’t pick it up. No, he pushed it around turning his whole body into a fuzzy shovel. As you’ll see in the last photo in this next series, even Oshi thought Perrito was being a bit odd in his shoveling behavior.

shovelshovel1

shovel2what?

So, while Oshi begged to go home, Perrito chased after the ball and then pushed it around with his nose.

home now?ball

home/ball

Another reason why I didn’t get to go on the walk with Gemma, Oshi, and Perrito was because I’d been on a really big walk and romp with Monty and Argo. Yes, Argo. He and his mom came to visit and we went for a walk at Seward Park. Monty and I love playing at Seward Park and Argo got to observe (and stay clear of) our blur of woodsy activities!

monty blurplaying blur

staying clearblurring

After our athletic play through Seward Park, we rested for a posed picture. Argo liked that more — he felt a lot safer with us sitting!

safe

It was a full day, as you can tell, and I know I’ll sleep soundly tonight. But I’ll also sleep contemplating the thought of this — my words, deeds, and actions have significance. That’s deep and the wait of it all has humbled me quite a bit. I will take my work more seriously from now on both in my interactions with others as well as in my role as a connection between the human and canine worlds.

Finally, to Wilson’s dad, know that Wilson is doing well, that he’ll be thrilled to see you when you return, and that all of us are sending you thoughts of safety and peace.

okay

Until tomorrow,

Rubin

dogsdogsdogsHow Many Dogs Do You See?

The good thing about Ann (my other mom) having the summer off is that we can take more dogs out to play than normal. Gretchen can usually only walk four at a time, but they have to be really good on the leash in order for her to move forward. Otherwise she’s unwrapping leashes and that is no fun at all. But today, Ann went with us and we walked five dogs (including me), which means it was five times the fun!

Plus (it’s like a math problem) we met our friend Harry (the Wheaton Terrier) at the park and all of the sudden we weren’t just five dogs playing, we were six dogs playing.

Oh how the fun just kept multiplying!Harry

Harry is an older fellow, but he’s very sweet and he really enjoyed all the company. He especially enjoyed playing with Ollie and Perrito who in turn, enjoyed playing with him.

Of course, Ollie enjoys everyone and Perrito thinks any new dog has been brought to the park just for him so Harry had his hands full as you can well imagine.

But Harry handled it all in stride, dividing his play time equally between Ollie and Perrito. They appreciated it, though I personally think Perrito would have liked to have Ollie all to himself.

Take a look at the pictures from this morning’s walk and decide for yourself…

Okay, so maybe it wasn’t how I exactly remembered it, but with six dogs on the field it was hard to keep track of all the activities. Lucy playing fetch, Perrito chasing Ollie, Ollie chasing whoever was running, Harry sniffing the ground, Oshi observing it all (he rarely takes part) and me, lying in the middle of it all hoping someone would notice how cute I am.

Oh yeah, and Lucy showed her acrobatic side….leaping up for a ball and then back down to the ground. Phenomenal!

Of course, after awhile, it was time to take everyone home and for me to get a nap while my moms ran off on errands. Don’t worry, they came back (they always do) and Gretchen and I headed out to retrieve the Retriever, Mr. Wilson! We walked around the park, across the other park, and then met up with MORE DOGS!  It was totally unexpected, but there they all were…Lulu first, then Gemma came along, and finally Gus.

As you can see, it was all about dogs today…lots of them. Gretchen and I had to laugh, though since all the dogs (except for Lucy) were some shade of brown. It was the brown dog day plus Lucy.  She didn’t seem to mind.

Me either.

Va-Cay: It’s all good!

river dogsWe took off early Saturday morning for a long drive to the other side of the mountains. The “other side” is amazingly different than our side. Our side is green and cool with occasional moisture. The other side is hot and dry with occasional wind and rain storms.  While it’s good to be home, it was really fun to explore a new area rich with smells and adventures.

Of course, I wasn’t so sure about the trip when we arrived. It was about 100 degrees, very dry, and there were very few trees. I like trees, but when we finally got out of the car, the lack of trees gave way to a familiar smell. You see, I was born in the high desert and though I don’t remember it all, I do remember the smell. So when we piled out of the car and I got a whiff of the sage and the dust, something kicked in and I remembered my birth place.

That’s when I started running in circles, crazed with the buzz of memory. Quillette (whose campground we were visiting) looked at me as if I were crazy and I suppose, in a way, I was. I mean, Eastern Washington is very much like Central Oregon (my birthplace) and it was good to revel in the similarities. Luckily, despite the heat there was a river, a big, fast moving, icy cold river and once we unpacked the car, a trip to the river was in store for all of us.  It was great as was our entire vacation and since it’s really my vacation, I’ll try not to bore you with too many details, but here are a few.

Needless to say, I was tired when we got home this afternoon, but we had work to do though playing with Wilson isn’t necessarily work!  He was happy to see us and really happy to smell me (I have yet to have a bath so I still smell of sage and dust).  We went for a walk and then met up with all the neighbors and their dogs! Wilson was thrilled!

Okay, I’ll admit it. I’m one tired pup, so off to bed I go and hopefully rest up for tomorrow’s day of walking. Sleep well everyone and may your dreams be filled with dust and sage and wide open fields where a river runs through…

Until tomorrow,

How Do You Work This Thing?

togetherHey Monty?

Yeah, Quillette?

Do you know how to work this thing?

What? The computer? Sure thing.

Good because Rubin and Gretchen are out of the house and I want to blog. Think he’d care.

No, he’s cool. I’ve blogged a couple of times so I’m sure you’re welcome to it!

Great! My mom never lets me use the computer and I was just thumbing through the photographs from today and I decided it would be fun to do what Rubin gets to do every day.

Go for, dude!

I think that’s dudess to you.

Oh, sorry.

No big deal, but as your elder, wiser and older, I feel it’s my job to make certain your slang is gender specific because you know, Rubin has very few female friends.

Wow, I never thought about that, but you’re right. There’s you and Gemma and Ginger and Lucy…uh, and Woobie. Andgingerly sometimes she walks Chloe.

Oh, I guess he does have girl friends.

A few, but I think you’re his favorite.

Really? I was thinking it was Ginger.

Yeah, he likes Ginger, but I think he likes Ginger’s dad most of all.

Richard? Oh yes. I like Richard very much, too. Don’t you?

He’s a nice enough fellow especially when he gives out treats.

Treats! Oh yes, oh yes, I love Richard and his treats.

richardtreats

You really like his treats, don’t you, Q?fetching monty

Don’t you?

Sure, but I’d much rather play fetch.

You guys and your fetch. I just don’t see the joy in it. Throw a ball, chase a ball, bring the ball back. I like more cerebral games.

Cerebral? What the…?

Games that require the use of your brain. Puzzles of a sort.

Puzzles? Give me a game of fetch any day. Body over brain for me!

Rubin feels the same way, I fear. The two of you could play fetch until the cows come home.

Cerebral? Cows? Will I know all these words when I get to be your age?

soccershadow ball

Yes, you’ll learn a lot more words when you get to be my age and maybe by that time, you’ll see the silliness of fetch.

Ya think? Wait a minute. I remember you playing with a ball today.

tosscatch

No, I do not play fetch. I play a complicated and skilled game of toss and catch. Can you do that?

Sometimes, but mostly I like to just chew on my ball. Rubin of course, likes to chew on my ball, too. Luckily, Gretchen always has another so I can pacify my urges.

pacifythief

Pacify your urges? That’s rather sophisticated language.

I’ve picked up a phrase or two in my years on the planet.

Did Ginger teach you? She’s my same age, you know.

Yeah, I know, but you hang out with her more than I do. In fact, didn’t I see you two sharing a drink this morning?

drinkssharing

Why yes. I’m a good hostess.

Hostess? Is that like a Twinkee?

Good God, man. You have so much to learn. I was being nice to Ginger, letting her go first. It was her bowl after all. And her water.

happy ginger

What did you do after our romp this morning?

shade dogWe hung out at the house for awhile and then Rubin took off with Ann, and Gretchen and I walked Oshi and Perrito.

Wasn’t it hot?

Like you wouldn’t believe. So hot, in fact, Oshi got to the park, found some shade and would not move another inch.

Whoa, what did you do then?

Gretchen tried to get me to play fetch because she knows how much Perrito likes it.

But you don’t like it at all.

Hostess. Remember that word. I am always a good hostess.

hostesstoo hot

Wasn’t it hot, though?

I think we’ve established that already. Soon, I just laid down, Perrito found some shade,  and Oshi started to take himself home.

home?shade dog2

Of course, it didn’t last long for Perrito. He likes me, you know.

smellingwait a minute

It looks like he “likes” you a bit too much at times…

Yes, well, my hostessing skills have limits, it’s true.

back off

Nice ears, dude. I mean, dudess.

Well, yes…and then we took them home.

You’re totally changing the subject, arent’ you?

It’s my prerogative given my age.

Prerogative? Is that some kind of Russian sandwich?

Next up was Wilson. Have you met him yet?

No, not yet. Wait, you just changed subjects again, didn’t you?big dog

I have talents, son, I have talents.

Okay, so what do you know about Wilson?

Well, apparently he’s young, but bigger than you.

Whoa! That’s pretty big.

And just like you he loves to swim…but I think he’s more skilled at it than you are.

Did you just insult me?

Monty, let’s be honest. You swim funny.

At least I swim. I’ve only see you wade. I should get points for effort, don’t you think?

Okay, you get one point, but Wilson gets a million because he’s a swimming fiend. Just look how far out he is?

fiendout and back

Okay, that’s one brave swimmer. Doesn’t that water look refreshing?

Very.

refreshedclose up

And Gretchen said EVERYONE was out at the lake today…people, turtles, mountains…

mountainturtles

Everyone but us, you mean.

Yes, well, she’s taken us a lot so we shouldn’t complain.

You’re right. What else did she do with Wilson?

I think they went through Coleman Park and Wilson just kept trying to find shade.

colemanshade dog3

I understand that. It’s really hot out there today.

Yes, really hot, but I got a Popsicle. Did you?

What, dude? A Popsicle from Gretchen’s freezer? Man Quillette, you are so lucky!

Okay, Monty, I’m not even going to begin correcting all the gender mistakes you just made in that last comment. Oh wait, do you hear that?

Uh?

I think Gretchen’s back. Quick, how do you publish this thing?

So much for age and wisdom…

Book Ends

ollie and friendThe day started with Ollie and ended with Wilson. In between? No one but me and my moms. I love my doggie pals and I had fun with both Ollie and Wilson today, but it was really fun to just hangs with my moms.

Ollie was our first bookend of the day and we took him to Luther Burbank Off-leash Park for a frolic and a swim. Yes, he did both, but he did a lot of visiting as well.  Ollie likes to visit. Me? I like to swim! And swim I did.

Ann threw the ball for me again and again while Gretchen watched Ollie make his way swimmingaround the park sniffing and smiling, sniffing and smiling.  He is one friendly fellow that Ollie and I am one swimming guy.

Ollie didn’t do much swimming, but he loved to wade in and out of the water grabbing toys, licking up the lake, and just standing there watching Ann throw the ball for me.

There were a lot of people and an equally large number of dogs all swimming and running and visiting.  Ollie was a little distracted, not sure which way he should run, but eventually settled on playing with a 4 month old puppy named Ella.

At one point, Ann decided to get Ollie swimming more so she grabbed a ball, waded into the water, and tempted Ollie. Here’s the action caught in sequence…

want it?go get itgood boy

And then it was time to run and run little Ollie did!

boundingrunning man3

Occasionally he cooled himself off in the lake though or rested on the shore, and since today was really warm, I’ll admit it was necessary to take a break or plunge in again!

restingrefreshing

But mostly Ollie ran with a big fat smile on his face!

happy man...

Next up? Wilson, but not till the end of the day. At first, I got left at home because it’s true, I ran and swam myself silly in the morning. I needed the rest. So Gretchen got Wilson, walked down to the lake, and he plunged right in almost before the ball was even thrown!

plungehappy boy

As I’ve mentioned, once Wilson gets wet he shoes his true skinniness (is that a word?).  But he is persistent begging Gretchen to keep throwing the ball into the water with those pleading eyes and then batting the ball in Gretchen’s direction every chance he got!

please?oops

Like Ollie, Wilson likes to visit so when he saw someone floating in the water he just had to go visit, much to the person’s surprise…

hellohello back

But then it was back to playing fetch and making sure Gretchen saw that he had the ball!

see it?are you sure?

The nice thing about the bookends today — they are both very happy fellows.

I'm happy

Once they were done swimming, Gretchen hiked Wilson up over the hill and tried to get him to pose on the dreaded grate overlooking the city. Knowing how much I hate the grate, it was good to see that Wilson was equally fearful. He actually stopped, froze, and would not budge until Gretchen headed back to the sidewalk and showed Wilson his ball.  He was difficult to pose because he wanted that ball more than anything, but he was very glad not to be sitting on the grate (which you can see behind him!).

grate

They headed down the other side of the hill toward our house where Wilson and I got to play a little before he headed back home. At first we played with our separate toys…

separate

Then Gretchen played some tug with Wilson…

tug timetug time2

And then Wilson found the ball and well, the game became much more complicated because I wanted the ball and Wilson did too…

he's got itI've got it

And once I got it, Wilson did whatever he could to get it back…

please?

Eventually, Wilson had to go back to his house, I had to eat dinner, and all of us are now preparing for bedtime.  It’s still hot outside, but I feel all warm and fuzzy inside bookended by two good friends.

Until tomorrow,

Rubin
