From My Lips to Dog’s Ears

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again — We are all different. Today’s group of dogs provides me with perfect examples to support my point. Take a look at this series of photos. Pay close attention to each dogs’ expression.

expressionsexpressions2

Who is uncomfortable here?  Who is being forward and who is being relaxed and patient? Keep looking…

At this point, I’m trying to give Monty a hint, “Dude, he’s kind of shy. Give him some space.” But Monty thinks everyone is as friendly as he is and keeps persisting….until Captain decides to send a clearer signal…

persistencepersistence2

Don’t worry. It all went well. Monty backed off and, in fact, said, “Whatever!” after this last encounter…

whatever

I did my best to reassure Captain that Monty was a friendly fellow, but often, as is the case with being the youngest in the crowd, both Monty and Captain didn’t listen to the advice from my lips.

Of course, for the rest of the day, Captain and Monty were perfectly fine with each other, so maybe they did listen.

My day started with Captain, of course, since he is staying with us for awhile. We had a leisurely morning with a short walk before breakfast after which we got a quick nap while Gretchen did some work. At 9, we picked up Monty and went on a really, really long walk along the lake and up through Leschi Park.  Captain wanted to play fetch for most of the walk, but eventually got tired out and gave up ever getting ball in Gretchen’s backpack. Gretchen didn’t take any pictures until we got back home whereupon Monty slammed me to the ground in hopes of a wrestling match!

You’re on, buddy!

take downtake down2

take down3take down4

Of course, it was only about a 30 second wrestling match as Gretchen broke us up in fear that Monty would leap off the deck and re-injure his front leg again.

Oh man…she spoils all the fun. Instead of playing hard, we had to take a nap. Imagine. A nap. She took Captain out for a spin with Oshi and Perrito…which again provides some interesting evidence to my “We Are All Different” study.

Captain is all about fetch. Oshi is not. Perrito, on the other hand, has all the sudden taken an interest in fetch, but even in their play (or not play in the case of Oshi) WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT.

Captain watches for the ball; Perrito watches Captain.

The day isn’t over nor is our work, really, but for now Captain is under the desk sound asleep, Monty is in the kitchen on the bed sound asleep, and my eyes are getting droopy. I’ll finish today’s blog with some swimming photos from yesterday. There are rumors that, if the sun shows up this afternoon, there might be more swimming in store for Monty, Captain, and me. “From my lips…”

Focusat the camera

Every dog has an ability to focus though some are able to do it a little more successfully than others. I focus on my moms (Gretchen and Ann) and pay close attention to what we are doing next — be it a nap, a meal, a walk, a game, a cuddle. I also focus on play and can be motivated to do just about anything if we are playing fetch or swimming or practicing agility. I can also focus on food, but only special kinds of food.

Captain, my half brother, is staying with us the next few days. His focus appears to be limited to tennis balls. When he came into our house, he searched out all of them and one by one Gretchen put them away in the cupboard so he could focus on getting comfortable in the new space. By the time he’d sniffed out every tennis ball, there were 13 of them in the cupboard.

13.

Lucy, too, is ball focused and has always shown a preference for tennis balls. But today, both Captain and Lucy showed their foci-versati (Latin for flexible thinking)…and it posed a bit of a problem.  Gretchen carries tennis balls with her in the dog walking backpack. We find a lot of them lucyon our walks and she picks them up (or I do) and stuffs them into the side pockets. But she also carries my favorite blue and orange ball because I like it the best. We happen to have a number of those blue and orange balls, but usually Gretchen only carries two, sometimes 3 of them with her.

Today we only had two and that, my friends posed a foci-versati problemo! As of late, Lucy has shown more interest in my blue and orange ball than in any tennis ball. It’s been okay because again, we usually have two. Only when the three of us — Lucy, Captain, and I — went out to play this morning, two blue and orange balls was one too few.

Captain wanted the blue and orange ball, too.

Oh boy. It was a dance of who will get to chase the ball now.

Lucy has it…

Captain wants it but for now, he’s content with a tennis ball…

But then Captain gives a pleading look at the orange and blue ball…

Lucy got it back…

But now I have it and am teasing Lucy with it…

I have it...

Oh boy, it went on like this for a long, long time…back and forth, back and forth. Needless to say, we got lots and lots of exercise!

Eventually, we all got tired…even Lucy though she wasn’t as tired as Captain and me. Still even in our exhaustion, we kept our six eyes focused on the two balls.

We took Lucy back to her mom, good and tired, and picked up Ollie along the way. We went for a long walk and Captain looked at me and said, “You have the best job in the world, little brother!”

“Focus,” I said, “It’s really important to focus.”

Because Captain and I were tired, our walk with Ollie ended at our house so Captain and I could get some water.  Ollie was happy to be at the house.  He could hardly contain himself and once I had some cool water, I focused on playing with him. He liked that very much!

Ollie felt bad for Captain since he wasn’t involved in our wrestling match so he invited Captain to play. Captain was focused on a tennis ball he found in the bushes. “Wow,” commented Ollie, “He’s totally focused on only one thing!”

“Yep,” I said. “I guess we should just let him be.”

So Ollie and I continued our games of wrestle and leaping off the deck…

Again, Ollie tried to engage Captain in a game of chase, but Ollie only ended up chasing Captain…not the other way around.

Captain kept looking for more tennis balls since he knew the orange and blue ones were tucked away in the backpack. Though he liked playing with the orange and blue ball, his focus returned to tennis balls once at home. He was disappointed to find out that all the tennis balls were in the cupboard.

Uh?

That's not a tennis ball!

Eventually, we all got tired…

Gretchen leashed us up again and we headed the long way through the park and back to Ollie’s house. He did what he always does and raced up his porch steps and through his dog door to get a drink of water. Captain and I headed back to the house where we had a really long nap before we headed out again for a swim in the lake. We have photos, but I’ll save those for another time.

We ended our long day with a walk and a game of fetch at the park with Monty. No pictures of that, but Monty comes tomorrow and I’m sure we’ll have lots and lots of fun and lots and lots of photographs of our fun focus!

Until tomorrow,

Rubin

learning fetchA Dog’s Education

For the past year or so, I have been playing with, walking with, and hanging out with Oshi and Perrito, the dogs next door. We go to the park, we play at the tennis courts, and we run free in the fields around our house.

Usually, they are both predictable. Oshi is reluctant to leave the house (he thinks he’s a cat) and Perrito is thrilled to bust out the front door and pee on something, anything! On the walk, Perrito races back and forth ahead of us and Oshi drags behind us. Perrito runs at the end of his leash while Oshi hugs Gretchen’s side.

When we get to the tennis courts or the field to play fetch, Oshi finds shade and Perrito chases me, scrurrying his furry self as fast as his legs will take him.

But today…well today Oshi did what Oshi always does…he got as close to Gretchen as he could…so close, Gretchen often had a hard time taking a picture of him…

…but Perrito did something he’s never done before…he played fetch. Not right away, but after chasing after me while I played fetch…

He found a ball on the court and started to play with it…

And then he brought it over to where I was lying in the shade resting with my own favorite orange and blue ball…

And then…and here’s the amazing part…and then he brought it to Gretchen who threw it across the courts and what did Perrito do? He chased after it…

We all, including Oshi, watched in amazement as Gretchen threw the ball again and again and over and over, Perrito chasing after it and bringing it back to Gretchen.

He played so much, he got really hot and eventually took his ball and rested in the shade…

Occasionally, Perrito reverted back to chasing me as I chased the ball…maybe getting pointers, I’m not sure…

But then he’d get his own ball, bring it to Gretchen, she’d throw it, and he’d practice fetching it…he still needs work, though, on his stops…he tumbled over more times than not, but always got up and continued the game.

tail over head

Perrito’s new skills even brought Oshi out of the shade to check it out…

out of the shade

“Is that really Perrito?” Oshi asked.

is that you?

“I can’t believe it,” Oshi said. “It really IS Perrito! I’m going back into the shade!”

wow

Neither Oshi or Perrito are old dogs. In fact, Perrito is younger than Oshi and younger than me, but he still learned a new trick today. A dog’s education is a terrible thing to waste that’s why I’ve shared it with you today.  Invest in your own dog’s education.

Trust me. They’ll surprise you!

Until tomorrow,

Some Days Are Meant For Smiling

smile onesmile2

Saturdays are great days. I don’t know why they make me so happy, but they do. Maybe it was because I got to see Rufus and Riley today. Maybe it was because I got to run in tall grass. Maybe it’s because we found coyote scat! Who knows, but it was a great day even if I had to work.

Rufus and Riley were excited to see us. We set out on the paved path, but soon Riley pulled (and I mean pulled) us up to the grassy hill. I have to admit, I like running up there as much as they do.

on the pathpath

It was particularly fun today because we found coyote scat. Gretchen says it’s called scat not poop, which makes no sense to me since I poop and I hate s-cats, if you know what I mean. But finding wild animal leftovers was heaven for Rufus and Riley! Their noses were working overtime, so much so that Gretchen had to pull them away before they rolled in it!

working noses

Rolling is Riley’s favorite thing to do.  It’s hard to tell when he’s going to do it, but Gretchen captured the sequence today…

First, the sniff…

overtime

He’s leaning a bit to his right. Can you see it? That means this is next…

over

Followed by a happy Beagle smile…

beagle smile

It’s really funny to watch, but Gretchen has to be cautious because often he likes to roll in things that don’t smell so great. Luckily, Riley was just scratching his back on this roll, but when he smelled the coyote poop…I mean, scat…he was all ready to smear the stuff all over him. Luckily, Gretchen saw all the signs of a potential roll and nabbed him before he was splayed out in bliss.

Rufus likes to roll some, too, but nothing like Riley. Rufus would rather prance through the tall grass and whenever Gretchen bends down to take a photo, he’s all over it thinking she’s going to give him a treat!

treat time!yummy

Yeah, it was that kind of day. A day of smells and smiles, scurrying and scat. As we headed off into the heat of the day, I just had to smile.

pals

Of course, the day is far from over. I hear tales of a graduation party followed by a birthday party. One includes swimming at the pool and another includes a birthday cake…the one now chilling in our fridge!

Stay tuned,

Rubin

The Hazards of Summer

On Thursday night, as Gretchen and I were walking through the tall grass toward the agility arena, Gretchen got stung by a bumblebee. It stungfriends her twice before she could flick it out from under the tongue of her shoe and for the rest of the evening, while I practice my jumps and weaves, her foot throbbed.  Luckily, she didn’t have an allergic reaction, but she made a mental note to put some Benadryl in the glove compartment of the car as well as some in her dog walking backpack in case I got stung or one of the dogs we walked suffered that stinging fate.

As with most mental notes, she forgot and we headed out today on our work of walking Friday dogs without Benadryl in the backpack. Our first walk of the morning was with Monty and Quillette, two of my best friends in the whole wide world.  It was a cool morning so the plan of going swimming had to wait. Instead we headed up to one of our favorite views of the city at Bradner Gardens. You can’t really see the city in this photo, but you get a sense of the city behind the gardens. We, of course, aren’t paying the least bit of attention to the view. There was a the possibility of another dog up the street, which made Quillette and me very alert. Monty could have cared less about the distractions.

We had such a nice long walk that the next best thing to do was to nap in the sun on the back porch while Gretchen cooked in the kitchen. parkEventually, though, she had to walk Oshi and Perrito so she left us in the house with sufficient treats, and retrieved the eager boys from next door.

They all went to the park and instead of playing in the grass, they hung out on the jungle gym, another hazard of summer.  It’s hard to tell, but the boys walked up a cat walk (curious name) and posed for the photograph about four feet off the ground.  Gretchen thought they were high enough to discourage any jumping.

Oh, she has much to learn.

While Perrito found his spot in the shade, Oshi contemplated the risks of finding solid ground again.

shadecontemplation

to jump or not to jump

Luckily, right before Oshi decided to go for it, Gretchen put down her camera and got the little guy in midair.

There are unknown hazards in the summer, I tell you. Lots and lots of unknown, unpredictable, unforeseen hazards!

Gretchen decided to stick to the ground for photographs and walking. Perrito, for one, was quite content with that decision.

happy ground

But even the ground can present hazards. For instance, on their way back home they ran into Theo and Dexter, two small but very loud dogs. At first everyone was a bit standoffish, though Theo and Dexter kept up the announcements and introductions. But then, as everyone settled down, it became a tangle of leashes and tails!

the meeting1the meeting2

By the time everyone got untangled, it was time to go home. Both Oshi and Perrito were hot and tired and went straight for their water when they walked into their front door.

Another hazard of summer is that the days become very full. Not only is there work, but friends and family all want to visit.  Gretchen had a lunch date with some friends and so she decided to ride her bike up to Teabiscuit’s house to offer her a solo walk (without me or Monty following), but after huffing and puffing herself up to the house on the hill, Gretchen realized she’d forgotten the house keys. So she rode all the way back home, picked up the keys, and hopped on the scooter this time to high tail it to Teabiscuit’s house. Only now her time was crunched and there was no way ‘Biscuit would get an hour walk in between Gretchen’s scheduled lunch date.

While we may not see timing as a hazard, it can be for it makes you stressed and worried when you’d rather be just laid back and calm. So Gretchen decided to give two walks to ‘Biscuit — a short one before lunch and a longer one after lunch. But when she got to the house, who was there? Jessica, the Friday nanny who also happens to be Quillette’s mom. Hard to follow?  Jessica had let Teabiscuit out earlier in the day and so they decided she’d be okay until Gretchen came back after lunch to walk her, which is exactly what she did.

But here is where timing is so interlinked to fate. First, they went to the park to play fetch, Teabiscuit’s favorite game.

fetchfetch2

But why is ‘Biscuit running away from Gretchen’s camera? Because there was a young boy playing catch with his Grandpa and Teabiscuit ADORES children so she headed right over to the boy in hopes that he’d throw her ball, which he did!

boy and ballfetch2

But eventually, Gretchen figured Teabiscuit was hot…

hot dog

…so she decided to take Teabiscuit down to the lake. Remember those twists of fate, the timing of the unpredictable? Here it comes.

Teabiscuit was really, really happy to go to the lake. She fetched the ball in the water and she fetched it on the lawn. Over and over again.

water fetchwater fetch2

land fetchlast water fetch

Sound like a perfect afternoon?  It was until they headed home and Teabiscuit stepped on a bumblebee. If Gretchen hadn’t forgotten the keys, if she’d headed out earlier, Teabiscuit may never have stepped on the bee. But there it is…the hazards of timing, the twists of fate.

Poor ‘Biscuit. She lifted her leg and when she walked, refused to put weight on it. Did Gretchen have Benadryl? Nope, so she lifted up Teabiscuit, carried her dripping wet all the way back up the hill, and waited to see if Teabiscuit would have an allergic reaction. Gretchen and Jessica searched for Benadryl at Teabiscuit’s home and Gretchen called the vet to get all the details straight. Still no allergic reaction so they held off on finding some Benadryl. Teabiscuit curled up on the couch under a pink blanket and slept the rest of the afternoon.

By the evening, she was back to normal, which made all of us very happy.

In the meantime, what about Quillette, Monty, and me? Well, we’re waiting for our afternoon walk, which eventually comes with a trip down to the lake for SWIMMING!!! Monty was thrilled…

woohoo

Quillette got in (with me swimming like crazy in the background), but she hung out on the shore for awhile, too…

she's inwatching

Monty loves to swim, but as I’ve reported before, he’s not very good at it.  He did really well at first…you can see him motoring out past Quillette to get the red buoy…but when he turns around, he goes under briefly freaking Gretchen out a bit…

good fetchgoing under

He always pops up and he always makes it back to shore, but there are a few moments of HAZARD HAZARD HAZARD blaring in Gretchen’s mind. It all turned out well in the end. We now have Benadryl in our work backpack along with other items we might need for some emergency first aide…like falling from heights and getting water out of big poodle ears!!!

Be careful out there,

Rubin

CaptainOh, Brother!

I have spent a great deal of time on this Dog Blog talking about the differences in dogs. Many humans feel we are all the same and I’ve seen it as my mission to dispel this belief. We are very different; very, very different.

BUT…

And I feel a little awkward saying this…

Some of us are very much alike.

So it is with my brother, Captain. I had never met him until last night and though it wasn’t exactly like looking in the mirror, it was pretty spooky how alike we are!

Captain my CaptainI brought two gifts with me — a floating buoy and a extra large, squeaky tennis ball. The whole evening, Captain I played “who gets the ball now?” This is when I noticed how many of our mannerisms are the same. We even have the same bark and the same growl and the same bouncy run. Genetics are powerful things, eh?

All evening long, Captain and I played with the ball. He’d play with it for awhile and then roll it to me. I’d play with it for awhile and then roll it back to him. He stalked me while I played and I stalked him while he played.

Okay, so his nose is a little longer and his hair has more of a wave, but you have to admit, we look and even pose a lot alike!

pose 1pose2

And we know the same tricks…he can shake with both hands too!

handshakehandshake2

I’ll admit, meeting my brother and playing with him made me very happy and I’m very excited that he will come for a sleepover next week. I’m sure they’ll be lots more observations about our similarities as well as our differences and lots of photographs of how happy I am to have a friend in my brother!

I'm happy

But that was last night. Today was a work day, but a fun one that started with a trip to the dog park with Ollie.  Usually this dog park isn’t very full, but today there were lots more dogs and people and a cute little girl all waiting to play with us!

playingplaying2

The little girl in pink knew how to handle me. She just pulled the ball right out of my mouth and threw it into the water. Ollie was impressed; so was Gretchen. I was impressed by her brand new cowgirl boots!

Ollie and girlboots

The little girl with the impressive boots came to the park with two of her Grandma’s dogs (I think they were named Willy and Annie, but I can’t remember)…oh, and the little girl came with her Grandma, too.

When we weren’t playing with the little girl (or she with us) we were playing with all the other dogs both in and out of the water!

Whew! Yes, I was tired after this so it was good I got a bit of rest before we picked up Teabiscuit.Teabiscuit

Usually Teabiscuit doesn’t acknowledge me when I show up for a walk, but today she actually kissed me!  How sweet.

Then we went for a walk and ended up at the big park where the girls from the local middle school hang out. A little background. Before I was a dog dog walker, I was a classroom dog working in Gretchen’s 5th grade room. So when we saw the girls at the park, well, I got really excited! And when I am excited, I roll in the cool grass!

Can you see how thrilled I was?  Teabiscuit had a great time too because all the girls wanted to pet and hold her. She likes that!

We both soaked up the love today and later, Biscuit thanked me for introducing her to all my girl-friends!  I told her that she was one of my girlfriends, too and she kissed me again, right before we left her at home. How sweet!

sweetI’m off to agility class this evening, but today has already been a really fun day. I can’t imagine it getting any better, but I’ve been surprised before! Heck, I was surprised last night when I met my brother, Captain!

Have a great Thursday,

img_9464Minding My Own Business

I had a feeling that today would be a different kind of day. My gut told me to be weary so I refused to eat my breakfast and I tentatively agreed to go on a walk with Gretchen.  I should have known that when she said, “Let’s go get Monty,” something was up, but not until we marched our way up the hill did I realize what I was in for.

Spa Day.

That’s what the humans call it. Spa Day, like it’s some kind relaxing adventure where we are pampered and fed fresh chicken all day. Though I like Lilliana and Carlos (who groombefore us), the act of getting groomed is both stressful and humiliating.

That’s why Monty goes with me. He doesn’t mind at all.  He’s just his easy-going self and let’s the groomers do whatever they want and let me tell you, some of their “whatevers” are rather personal. Two words: Anal Glands. I’ll let it rest there.

So we picked up Monty and on our journey up the hill, we ran into Jessica and Quillette. I was very happy to see them, but by the time we got to the top of the hill, even Quillette sensed the doom of the groomer approaching. Quillette gets bathed, but she doesn’t go through the whole spa routine. There’s no meticulous combing out, no trimming of the nails, no plucking of hair out of her ears, no blow dryer heating her up while drying her off…no, she simple goes for a bath, but let me tell you, she hates that bath. So when we got close to Dog Mania (aka THE SPA) she said to us, “Oh no. This doesn’t look good.”

Jessica and Gretchen tried to distract us with some photos at the water fountain, and even though we partook in the deliciously fresh water, we were saddened that we weren’t going to the lake or  perhaps on a longer walk through the shaded woods.

fountainfountain2fountain3

When we finally got to the groomer, other victims were waiting for their “spa date” as well.  This is Mars…her eyes say it all!

Gretchen went back to work after dropping us off, but she only had Oshi and Perrito lined up today so she decided to take advantage of a dog-free house and clean.  In between the cleaning, she took the boys for a nice walk through all the parks that connect in our neighborhood.

Perrito was thrilled to be outside in the sun. Oshi, not so much.

Gretchen went back to cleaning — vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, dusting — while we were still getting primped and plucked. Finally, FINALLY they came to get us. Yes, Jessica and Quillette came too because they both wanted to see the AFTER since they’d seen the BEFORE that morning.

Anatomy of a Dog’s Laugh

While many humans may see dogs as limited in our emotions, if you truly know a dog, you know that we each come with our own personalities, or as I’ve referred to it often, “dog”-analities. While humans study the body language of other humans, true dog-lovers know that canine body language is a powerful indicator of what we are saying.

Take, for instance, little Ollie. When we take him to the field to play fetch, he’s not that interested in playing fetch. Rather, he follows Gretchen around and stands as close to her as he can possibly get. And then he looks, with his hopeful eyes, watching for any movement from Gretchen that communicates to him what he should do next. He is attentive when allowed to roam free and often, hugs closer if he hears a sound that frightens him.

I, on the other hand, am also attentive, but when I am startled, I bark and run toward the thing that startled me. Not Ollie. He tucks in closer whereas Lucy ignores it all — oblivious to all hazards, she is solely focused on fetching the ball.

I guess what I’m trying to say is that much can be understood about each of us, if you pay close attention to things like our body positions, our ears and tails, and most importantly, our smiles. Our smiles, as you can tell from Ollie’s above, are each uniquely different and we each smile at different situations  in different ways(see photos below). They are, as humans have said, a window to our souls and today we had lots of soul-exposing windows!

Okay, enough philosophizing. Today was a great day that started off with a solo walk –  just me and Gretchen. We went to the lake and I got to swim and swim and swim in addition to practicing my “wait” command for agility. I’m getting pretty good at it. Gretchen and I made a deal that when we go on solo walks (which I suppose are really duo walks) she won’t photograph me. I appreciate that. I want her focused on the fun walking dogswe’re having and not on the camera. Of course, this means no photographs of me being the diving and swimming star that I am.

Oh well.

After our walk/swim, we had breakfast — she had oatmeal with fresh blueberries and I had my usual with last night’s chicken leftovers. Yum. Then we walked up to fetch Lucy and Ollie and along the way ran into Nini, one of my favorite aunts.  Nini teaches at the school nearby and she had her class out at the park when we came by.  Gretchen handed me off to Nini while she went to retrieve Ollie and Lucy and soon, we were on a walk and Nini snapped our photograph. It’s rare that Gretchen gets in the photo, but Nini was amazed by Gretchen’s leash handling abilities and wanted to get a photograph. So thanks, Auntie Nini.  Maybe next time, I can get my photo taken with you!

We decided to head to the little field to play some fetch since I’d already been swimming and Lucy isn’t much of a swimmer. We had lots of fun a the park and the best way to share it with you all is through photographs (okay, I’ll admit it’s a good thing Gretchen brings her camera on these outings!).

First, Lucy played fetch, but this is when things got interesting. As you can see, she does not have her yellow tennis ball in her mouth. She has my orange and blue ball.

fetchHow, pray tell, did that happen?

I was pretty tired from all the swimming so while I played some fetch, I mostly hung out in theshade time shade with Ollie close by. I kept my ball close because I know Lucy covets it.

Ollie could care less about my ball or any ball for that matter and since it was warm, he found the shade quite delicious, too.

So Gretchen threw the tennis ball over and over for Lucy who retrieved like a machine, dropping the ball at Gretchen’s feet and begging her to throw it!throw it again!

Occasionally, Ollie gets up and frolics around a bit…but mostly, he hangs out by Gretchen or by me…

So there we were, hanging out in the shade when Lucy comes up and starts staring at me. Here, my friends, is a good time to notice the differences in our body language.

Can you see the innocence in the first photo, the alertness in the second, the trust I exhibit in the third? “Just try it,” I’m saying and well, guess what? She did, but she waited patiently for her opportunity.

Ollie provided it…he decided he’d had enough sitting in the shade, enough waiting for Gretchen to offer him a treat and he tackled me. Next thing I know, we’re in a wrestling match and my orange and blue ball is lost…to Lucy!

What’s a dog to do? Luckily, after the wrestling match (that I let Ollie win) it was time to go home so we leashed up, Lucy gave up my ball, Gretchen put the camera away and we all headed north into the sunshine.

After Lucy and Ollie were dropped off, we headed south again to get Gemma. Now, talk about body language…Gemma has it in spades. She was raring to go when we got to her house and so we took a long walk through the park, across the street to the other park, and then we came back to our house since everyone needed a drink of cold water. It’s pretty warm today.

Besides, Gretchen said that Gemma had asked to play with me at home and well, since she is a paying client, we couldn’t very well say no. So into the backyard we headed after our cool drink of water and what did Gemma do? She hung out in the shade by the rock wall. It took a bit of enticing to get her to engage, but once she did, we went at it like we usually do!

Yes, I’ll admit…I was tired and hot, but I still had lots of fun. The only thing that would have made it better? If Gretchen had filled the pool, but Gemma is still recovering from her surgery and we decided it was best not to get her healing stitches wet. Instead, we got to drink from the hose and Gemma really liked that!  And then we began our game of chase. Woo, that was fun!

And then we wrestled some more…

And then…well, I’ll let our body language speak for itself…

June 8, Monday

posed on the porchIt’s Like This…

Being a dog dog walker who occasionally offers sleepovers, one of the things you need to get used to is saying goodbye.  While I’m a master of saying hello — all wiggles and groans — I’m very silent and a bit put out of place when I must say goodbye.

So today is the day I must say goodbye to my new friend and recent guest, Woobie. While I know I’ll see Woobie in the future (on the trail, at the pea patch, and maybe even for another sleepover), it’s kind of sad to see her go. We’ve shared meals, we’ve shared beds, we’ve shared play time and down time.

And we’ve shared friends…well, I’ve shared my friends with her.

For her last night with us, Jessica and Quillette came over. Gretchen, of course, had to pose us on the porch and somehow got us all with our noses up.  I think someone was grilling a few houses over. Then, while everyone watched the WNBA (Storm versus Sacramento…go Storm!), we all hung out sleeping side by side, our ears alert for any hint of human activity. When the game was over, we went for one last walk and climbed the stairs to bed.

As a special treat, Gretchen took Woobie and me to Marymoor Off-Leash Park and Woobie and I had a great time.  I’m not sure if Woobie has down the trailever been there, but she has a much different approach to the park than I do. The second I’m let off leash, I go running. Woobie is far more cautious. She put her nose to the ground and smelled the bazillion different scents covering the park. And yes, I mean a bazillion.

fetch timeI play fetch until I can hardly catch my breath, but Woobie just put her nose in the hair and sniffed over and over. Then she’d shake, feeling the sun warm her long hair, and off she’d go to find the next scent or visit with another park visitor.

What’s great about Marymoor is that a river runs through it. No, not like Norman MacLean or anything, just a river where dogs are allowed to play. There’s nothing I like more than a park that offers off-leash capabilities, wide open spaces for playing fetch, and a cool river in which to refresh.  Woobie liked it too!

I shrink when I get in the water. Woobie expands.

We had a great time and it was a perfect way to send Woobie off with her family.  Until next time, Woobster!

missing Woobie

Next up, some boy time. We picked up Marley who was thrilled to see us. He jumped and moaned and jumped some more. We walked over to Oshi and Perrito’s house and Perrito was as thrilled to see Marley as Marley was to see him. Oshi? Well, Oshi likes to stay out of the greetings when they are as lively as the ones between Perrito and Marley are.

We walked through the park thinking we’d play at the little field, but the tennis courts were open (surprisingly) so we head over there where the game of who loves whom more continued. I vote that Perrito is more in love with Marley than the other way around, but I could be wrong…

Perrito tried to teach Marley how to levitate…

"Almost, Marley. Just pick up that back foot!"

"Almost, Marley. Just pick up that back foot!"

"You really must focus!"

"You really must focus!"

"Keep trying, keep trying!"

"Keep trying, keep trying!"

"Would it help if I pushed from underneath you?"

"Oh, yes, yes, yes. You're almost there!"

"Oh, yes, yes, yes. You're almost there!"

"See how there is nothing under the ball? That's what we want with your feet!"

"See how there is nothing under the ball? That's what we want with your feet!"

"Good gracious, Perrito. Give the boy a rest!"

"Good gracious, Perrito. Give the boy a rest!"

"Yes. Perrito it is too hot for levitation practice!"

"Yes. Perrito it is too hot for levitation practice!"

"Yeah (pant, pant, pant), okay. Enough!"

"Yeah (pant, pant, pant), okay. Enough!"

"Thanks Oshi. I was afraid he'd never let me rest!"

"Thanks Oshi. I was afraid he'd never let me rest!"

"Yes, Perrito is persistent if he is anything!"

"Yes, Perrito is persistent if he is anything!"

"Whew. I'm tired. Maybe next time I'll levitate!"

"Whew. I'm tired. Maybe next time I'll levitate!"

After we dropped off Oshi and Perrito, Marley hung out at hour house for a bit. We were both tired so we crashed while Gretchen took care of her business.  I hear rumors of another walk though.

Can it be true?

Until tomorrow,

Rubin

My Kind of Sunday

Sunday chaseSundays are usually pretty relaxed at our house. We wake later, we cuddle on the bed together, we eat a big breakfast, and then head out for a nice long walk. With Woobie here our lives haven’t changed much, we just have one more body in bed with us when we cuddle and one more dog on a leash for our walks.

Today we walked down by the lake. Woobie’s family told us she liked to swim, but we were a little skeptical.  All that hair? What would she do with it while swimming? How long would it take for her to dry off? Won’t she sink under the weight of it all?

Let me back up a bit. Woobie is a pretty laid back dog. She has her moments of frolic, but basically she’s relaxed and calm. Today however, the closer we got the lake, the more lively she became. And once we arrived at the water, she went in the second Gretchen unleashed her! Water always makes me friskier and it was exactly the same for Woobie. She took off and raced around the park with me and our new friend, Daisy, chasing right after her. Now that’s my idea of a fun Sunday!

swimmingThe temperature today isn’t anything like last week’s scolding weather, so the lake didn’t feel as refreshing.  Still, I swam in after my ball and Woobie played a little retrieving, too. When she gets into the water, she expands. Gretchen says she looks like a sea urchin. I’ve never seen one, but if that’s what a sea urchin looks like, it’s pretty cool.

It was hard to take good pictures of her today because the lighting was really flat and since Woobie is a dark dog, she just got lost in the darkness of the water and the sky.

I, on the other hand, stand out with a  golden glow.

Daisy, the Boxer, is just a puppy and she didn’t want to go in at all though she was very interested in Woobie…

Woobie interested in Daisy?…not so much.

And then Woobie invited us all to play…just like that. It was way fun.

And then we went back into the water!  Well, Woobie and I did. Daisy watched from the shore and chased after us when we came out.

While it may seem like we never slow down, we did relax a bit. Even Daisy slowed down some watching Woobie shake the water off her long hair and at one point, she witnessed the collision between Woobie and me. It was an accident. She swam right in front of me on my quest to retrieve my ball.

I think Daisy sums up this Sunday morning’s outing with her big puppy smile. Ah, yes…my kind of Sunday!
